Shvedova returning to the singles court now for the first time since injuries and also having twins. Her last singles match was at the French Open back in 2017.

Kasatkina like an annoying fly that won't go away. Finally squashed after almost 3 hours.

Mugu was up 5-2 or so in the 2nd (one break lead) and had a match point but dropped 5 straight games. Closed it out 6-3 in the third though.

Wow though. 50 winners 69 unforced. lol

Out of 11 completed matches, Anisimova over Alexandrova is the only betting upset today.

Ostapenko/Teichmann finishing the slate now.

Gap between #1 Barty and #2 Halep set to increase after narrowing last week.

With Halep out and Barty having not played the tournament last year, the gap this week starts at just under 2,300 points between #1 and #2 and over 3,150 points between #1 Barty and #3 Pliskova.

Next week will be a real shake up. Barty and Halep only defending 4R points in Indian Wells, Pliskova defending QF points, Andreescu has her 1000 champion points coming off. Kerber will lose her 650 runner up points and looks set to drop out of the top 35(!)

Svitolina out of the top 10 after Miami imo
Majority of her points to defend are in the backend of the season:
Wimbledon SF
Canada QF
US Open SF
Wuhan QF
Beijing QF
YEC Final

All she has to defend til Wimbledon is her Indian Wells SF. She lost in her first matches in Miami, Madrid, Rome, Birmingham and Eastbourne. And at the French Open she only made the 3R.

Maybe this is the difference with the new crop coming forward: Svitolina is undone by power AND touch.

Random thought - whats the deal with ex-Russian players representing Kazakhstan? Why do they switch allegiance, and what's the opinion of Russia on this?
Rybakina's recent run has made that thought crop up for me again.

Sometimes it's purely financial- more funds/backing/training from a different federation. i.e. Mary Pierce back in the day.

This makes for interesting general reading.

Tomljanović began competing for Australia at the 2014 US Open, after having obtained permanent residency in Australia. For the next four years she was required to represent Croatia at all non-Grand Slam events,[4] until she was granted Australian citizenship in January 2018, allowing her to represent the country at all events on the WTA Tour.[5]

Putint move because she didn't get WC and support, I read that somewhere.

For players like Rybakina, funding is really important as her junior career is not that shining compare to her age compatriot Blinkova and Zhuk (Born 98, 99 and Rybakina is 99) and Potapova (Born 2001).

Blinkova and Zhuk made finals Wimbledon 2015 (Zhuk won) and Potapova won Wimbledon 2016. Rybakina herself just made SF at AO and FO 2017.

Surely Garbine is due some straight sets wins soon? Seems like she's always in a 3 set tussle.

What do people reckon to Mugu's chances at RG and Wimbledon if she keeps her somewhat winning ways up? Both surfaces don't come so naturally to a lot of players, so I feel like the catchment of potential winners is smaller than that of AO/USO. I know we're a while off yet and still have IW/Miami to witness, but still...

Muguruza has had both tremendous highs and jaw-dropping lows at both RG and Wimbledon, so it's a lottery.

I saw that match. Sloane just played horrible and the
other girl played inspired tennis. Sloane was clearly
the better hitter. Just couldn't string points together

Between Kerber and Sloane it's a real race to the bottom.

Kerber defending finalist points in Indian Wells, looks set to drop from #21 to around #38.
Sloane defending SF points in Madrid and QF point at RG. Those two events alone make up for over half of her points.

Sloane Stephen lost to a 270 ranked Renata Zarazua in the 1st round 4-6, 2-6! Zarazua is a 22 year old Mexican player that got a “wildcard” entry.

Also in Acapulco, Venus fails to convert any of her SEVEN match points and goes on to lose to Juvan who's only accomplishment that I know of was taking a set off sister Serena at Wimbledon in the 1R last year.

Face palm at Stephens' results. People were questioning whether she has been homesick, what with being in a relationship and what not, but she's not played since AO, so has had plenty of time off, and now she's only hopped over the border to Mexico and gets beaten handily in R1.
So, apparently she's only playing for the big events, but then loses R1 in AO, so I've no idea what's going on. This is fast becoming a Eugenie Bouchard kind of result line... You've got so many new girls showing up every 6-12 months that you need to start stringing some wins together or you simply won't have enough match practice to challenge them. Is the plan to become as big a non-factor in tournaments that you have 0 pressure because you're expected to lose R1? It beats me.

Apparently foot faulted 6 or 7 times.
I have no issue with her playing on with variable results, but why not get a decent doubles partner and actually have a shot at winning events.

How come the Williams' didn't play doubles at the AO? With it being an Olympic year, I'd have thought they'd start to play again.

Is Errani still underarm serving? She won through qualies and her R1 match in Acapulco - gets Wang Xiyu next.

Realistically Venus Williams should play with someone younger and fitter than her sister and more importantly, plays a fuller schedule.
Also, it would seem sensible for the younger sibling to concentrate on singles at the majors and conserve energy.
