Djokovic withdraws from Cincinnati!

Another year without winning Cincinnati, the real slam. Nole could end his career without this prestigious event. Many great players - Federer, Nadal, Sampras, Agassi, Connors, Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Wilander have won this event. Even Murray won Cincinnati twice.

Some of those mentioned players never won WTF or Rome.

LOL, stop. Rome is more prestigious than Cincinnati, and Federer hasn't won that one. Can we stop with this petty nitpicking of "career holes"?

Looks like he's worn himself out. Despite recent events there will be Novak fans who will still insist those far lesser non-slam events matter in the grand scheme of things for an ATG.
Were they really worth the additional accumalation of mental and physical wear and tear to the possible detriment of his chances in what really matters for him? Not in My opinion.

Tennis is Nole's job, winning has become like a drug, big titles are his needle... You can not fault him for that, he was/is in his prime, but I agree that from now on in he needs to cut on his workload and emotional energy expenditure, else it will become harder and harder to nail it when the slams are on.

Novak though, is the one to determine this, helped by his closest people/advisors.

Ever since the French Open he seems deflated even when he won in Toronto, it was all very lackadaisical.

He really wanted that Gold Medal though. It's dawning on me that Djokovic might retire not so long in the future, he's done it all, what is the motivation? To beat Federer's 17 slam record?

Well, there is that I suppose! ;)

And these posters are all about 12 years old. It's beyond belief that many Djoker fans tout meaningless Masters 1000 events as a criterion for ATG. For the 100,000th time: one major eclipses 30 Masters 1000 events. If you doubt it, just ask people whose opinions resonate: Agassi, Pete, Becker, Laver, etc.

Stop being silly. Novak winning Cinci will not affect his legacy. It's pretty much irrelevant. He should only focus on the slams at this point.

Peter Bodo wrote that this is a serious sign that something strange is afoot in the haus of djoko. Which means niente.

This move is genius, if he wins the us open. If he does not, the decline worsens and he slips below borg in the pantheon of greats ... Like, he just needs to retire already.

Bodo also leveled that pulling out of cincy after losing early in rio's singles and dubs ends up not looking like an atp ambassador type. Just not the kind of leader he says he wants to be. I see it, But on the other hand, the man is doing what he needs to do, as a professional, to attack the field at the open. I do not always like nole, but i admire his effort. He yearns for adulation and titles at the slams. He tries his tail off. He deserves some flak for this withdrawal, but if it works, 'he and his team' deserve some credit for managing the schedule.

Don't be too sure those names you mentioned will agree with you that Masters titles are meaningless. Sampras, for instance, has gone on record as saying they are, in some respects, harder to win than Slams.

In relation to slams they are meaningless IMO.

I disagree. Players who win these events often go on to win Slams (not always but more often than not). They are an important warm-up for many Slam events. The relationship to Slams is not meaningless. IMO it is a grave mistake to assume that, just because Slams are the biggest and most important events, nothing else is of value. The tour would not survive if it just consisted of the 4 Slams.

I'm not saying nothing else is of value or that Masters 1000s are not needed for the ATP to survive. Obviously Masters 1000s are necessary for the ATP to survive but that has nothing to do with how elite players view their importance compared to slams. All I'm saying is that in relation to slams, Masters 1000 events have little legacy value.

The only time someone should ever drop in the pantheon of greatness is if they are found doping or something

Continuining to play should never detract from one's legacy; even if they lose every single match. This is partially the reason why I dislike using things like H2H and Win % as a measure of greatness.

This is Murray's opportunity. This could be Murray's opportunity to hit a knockout blow at the US open because in probably 6 years Djokovic is vulnerable for the first time.

I wonder if a bunch of also-rans and their coaches are sensing the same, and ramping up for a different kind of battle. Could start seeing a lot more surprise winners.

I think the USO is pretty much going to show us everything we need to know. If Novak falters there, then there is serious blood in the water and the sharks are going to go into a frenzy, and we could start seeing some serious shifts amongst the rankings, as it could lead to greater motivation, but also better chances at winning key events. Now, if Novak turns up and routines everyone, barring the odd match that he is known to throw in every slam, then ultimately while the boat had been rocked, it still stayed on course. Novak ends the year the world number one, 13 slams, and majority of the people will look at W and Olympics as a blip, we all know how quickly people change their opinions from tournament to tournament.

I wish Nole a speedy recovery. :)

But I fear like this is the beginning of his decline. He is no spring chicken anymore and contrary to what some of his fans believe, age will affect him going forward.

Not sure if you got that i was referring to public opinion affected by results and what jon wertheim calls the recency factor.
Either way....
What about when the whole internet forum community urges a player to retire? Yknow...finnish threads. And i do not mean apparel from finland.

The recency effect is why we shouldn't judge players' careers before they retire
