... Even Lendl skipped it at some point claiming that grass is for cows...

Sour grapes from Lendl? Ivan won the singles title at RG (3x), USO (2x) and AO (2x) but never at SW19. Seems he was unable to win any slam event on grass. He made it to only 1 AO final when it was still played on grass (til 1987). His 2 AO titles came after '88 (when it switched over to Rebound Ace hard courts). Made 2 finals on the grass at Wimbledon but never won it.

yes, and Boris is paid by the BBC to say this kind of things! Although I do agree that courts used to be even worse is possible to imagine, but still this is a serious problem when one calls itself the greatest, and can only provide poor quality courts. BTW, many players have been complaining about the quality of the courts (ask Djokovic).

Bah, humbug. Novak is a known complainer. He also complained about blue clay. As did Rafa and Uncle Toni. Some players are just difficult to please. Roger didn't seem to mind it. And even tho' the slower grass this year at Wimbledon was not ideal for him, he still managed to prevail.

I didnt make the rules

ITF calls hard court the original surface of the game followed by grass...

Where did you get that from? Lawn tennis started back around 1859 or so. Except for RG, the majors all started on grass. It's been some 140 years of lawn tennis for Wimbledon. 94 years on grass for the USO and 83 years for the AO.

Yes. It's not the Superbowl of tennis. It's just a major, and as far as major's go, it's actually the least important of the 4 of them...

Laughable. Not so in this universe. Are you visiting from some parallel world?

Agree completely. Most people have been hammered with the belief that Wimbledon is something so special, the grass, the history, the dress code, the queen, etc... truth is this is just aggressive marketing from a tournament which is in decline for many years, and which knows it. In one word this is just propaganda.

In what way has it been in decline? The men's singles finals of 2008 and 2009 are among the best of all time. The finals of 2012, 2014 & 2015 weren't too shabby either. And then there were many outstanding matches leading up to the finals in the past decade on both the men's and women's side. In decline???

Wimbledon is the most prestigious tennis tournament on the planet.

Its uniqueness has been preserved, since it is now the only major tournament which is played on grass. The all-white tradition, strawberries and cream, Pimm's, the Royal Box....all symbolize the pinnacle of tennis achievement.

It is therefore appropriate that the King of tennis, Roger Federer, has the most titles at SW19.

Nadal and Novak Djokovic, mere princes, are free to hold records at lesser venues.

Legend
"Federer won it without breaking a sweat, without losing a single set, it was a complete walk in the park."

This also happened at RG with Nadal.

And it's not about the courts being unadequate, but about some players being unadequate on this very difficult surface. Grass requires a lot more court-craft than other surfaces. Which Federer has in abundance, and the reason why he is still a big favourite each year.
True, but what great or near great player did Roger beat to win this Wimbledon? The same is true with Rafa in this year's FO. Both were a bit lucky that Novak and Murray were having an off year. Of course, this is not Roger or Rafa's fault, but still a fact. Wimbledon IS overrated, especially since it is the only grass tournament most players compete in these days.

You keep telling that to yourself and, who know's, maybe one day you'll come to believe it. ;)

Grass is an archaic surface to play tennis on today and that will always make Wimbledon less meaningful on the pro tour as slams who play on surfaces supported by the pro tour. In between shoving Wimbledon's history down our throats, we also get the joy of the inane Wimbledon dress code and watching tournament officials force players into alternative underpants, completely marked up and destroyed grass courts, a significantly lower quality of match play, stuffy atmospheres and a crowd where the average age is around 42.

Wimbledon has this ridiculous habit of mythologizing itself. They just repeat Rudyard Kipling lines over and over, get footage of members of an equally old and archaic monarchy, show footage of grass being cut in slow-motion and lord over consumers the idea that Wimbledon is hallowed ground. It's not. It's a tournament where grown men and women hit yellow balls back and forth. And by those standards, it's not a very good one.

I could be wrong, but I'm beginning to get the sense that you're not a fan of Wimbledon.

The tournament was uninteresting from the beginning to the end, so it was very disappointing. The final was a big stinker as far as entertainment/tennis value goes, the only good thing to come out of that tournament was #19 for RF. From a tennis stand point, this year's AO was a lot more interesting because we had some great matches in both the 1st and 2nd week, and then the 2 legends of our sport made the final, which then turned into an epic 5 setter, which will be remembered by the tennis community for a very long time. The FO wasn't very interesting either, only match that provided some entertainment value to me was the Wawrinka/Murray SF however that was quick forgotten because of the disappointing final that followed. Much like this year's Wimbledon will be remembered for #8 for Federer, FO will best be remembered for "La Decima" for Rafa, and not the matches that were played.

Is Wimbledon overrated? I don't think so. It's not the tournament's fault that logic wasn't followed and that top seeds lost earlier than expected which prevented us from having really interesting SF/F matches. Had Murray/Djokovic/Nadal not lost before the SF, we would probably have a very different conversation today.

Yes, in decline because grass used to be played a lot more all over the world until the 80s. Today only a very few tournaments are played on grass, and many many more are played on hard and clay. Wimbledon is like a old fashioned tournament from another time which is still trying to stay actual and relevant. They need to hang onto their past, but in all honesty they do not deserve the title of greatest anymore. Things have changed, e.g. the AO which used to be a minor slam, has become in the past 10-15 years one of the best and most enjoyable slams to play and watch. Wimbledon is old-fashioned, arrogant and awkward, and their courts are just horrible to look at and play on after just a few days.

I mostly agree with what you said, but I realized I was not being clear enough when I said "overrated". I was not so much talking about the quality of the matches (although to some degree if counts too) but more about the fact that Wimbledon is overrated for being constantly presented as the best tournament in the world, as all the pundits and commentators want us to believe. There was maybe a time that was true, when grass was a relevant surface with many more tournaments played on grass, but today grass has become a minor surface, superseeded by hard and clay, and that makes Wimbledon way overrated in the modern era.

Do you arbitrary pull such measuring sticks out of your derriere or is it just for Wimbledon?

How about the fact that Wimbledon requires qualities that are much closer to the original qualities required from a tennis player to win tennis matches since the inception of the modern tennis than any other of the Majors?

It is that sort of thinking that leads to the creation of useless tennis players from the type that Federer criticizes.

Depends of the way you want to see it I'll guess. I fully agree that grass isn't as relevant as it once was given the little amount of time allocated to that surface in the schedule, which is a shame IMO. However, if I had to pick one tournament that epitomizes what tennis is all about, Wimbledon is first thing that comes to mind. The classy, gentleman like image associated to tennis as well the time honored tradition are at their peak at Wimbledon, given that it's one of the, if not the oldest tournament on tour. Some may not see eye to eye with some of the traditions, and I include myself in there, but it's what sets it apart from the rest of the tournaments, as well as being on grass which as you said is so rare these days. All of this adds to it's prestige which is one of the many reasons why people see it as the most important one. Each major is special in it's own way, but for me Wimbledon is the most important, closely followed by the USO.

This is not in keeping with your previous statement. You indicated that the (Wimbledon) tournament was in decline. Now you are saying something quite different.

Also, the very fact the SW19 remains the only slam left played on grass makes it important. It serves to provide us with a connection to the game played by Laver, Emerson, Gonzales, Ashe and numerous other past champions. Connors played 9 of his slam finals on the grass of Wimbledon, the AO and the USO. Sadly, technology has already changed the game way too much as it is. The S&V game has become all too rare on non-grass events. Must we destroy all connections to the tennis of the past and homogenize the court surfaces? The game of tennis has already lost some of the diversity it once had. Let's not completely eradicate it.

I enjoy Federer's brand of time-robbing ultra aggressive baseline play mixed with all-court skills and net play, and Wimbledon is where that style flourishes. So no, this was an excellent Wimbledon for me.

Only previous 2 years were boring due to the easy finals, but RG was the same this year. At least Fed is still amazing to watch.

Most Wimbledons since 03 (when Fed won) have been better and more exciting than RG by far.

So I guess you're judging Wimbledon (and its hallowed history) merely on one year, 2017? Because this year happened to be anti-climatic and an "easy" win for the victor, means the prior 140 years of this event just sort of fade away? You're disappointed in one single year and you relegate it to "overrated?"

Wimbledon is THE tournament on the tennis calendar and that's not changing. The only player I have ever known to have said they wanted to win some another tournament above Wimbledon was Roddick, and that was after he'd won the USO and lost several Wimbledon finals to Roger. Nole, Andy, Nadal, Lendl, Connors, Borg, Laver, Rosewall... ad infinitum all are on record as saying the tournament they most want(ed) to win was Wimbledon. It's not overrated, it's justly regarded universally as the most important and prestigious event on the tennis calendar.

I would not say that Wimbledon is "overrated," however this year's Championships were pretty boring personally even though I am very happy for Roger and wouldn't want anybody else to win. Australian Open has hands down been the best Slam of the year with the French behind it. I think this has to do with the match-ups, Fed was the only one of the big four to make it to the semis. Wawrinka went out early and I wish we saw more of A. Zverev, Kyrgios, Nishikori, and Theim. Hopefully, these players have long runs at the USO this year

Yes, it is the one that the majority of the legends wants. Borg often spoke about how he valued his Wimbledon titles over his RG titles, Sampras spoke about how it is the biggest event in the sport, Agassi even gave the nod and said he puts Wimbledon ahead of USO, Rafter always dreamed of winning Wimbledon, Goran lived and breathed to hold that title just once, Lendl despite saying grass is for cows went onto skip RG just so he could win Wimbledon and built an exact replica in his back yard to practice on and finally admitted how much he wanted the title. Federer has said nothing beat being Wimbledon champion for the year, not even being world number one. And the list goes on and on.

Nevermind, it seems that you, and some other posters here, do not understand the meaning of overrated. Federer won it without breaking a sweat, without losing a single set, it was a complete walk in the park. I can remember only two memorable matches from this year's Wimbledon, the Nadal-Muller match and the Querrey-Tsonga match. The Querrey-Murray was good for 3 sets, but most other matches were boring and uninteresting. AO and the French were much better in tennis quality and interesting matches IMO. This and the fact that the courts at Wimbledon degrade so quickly to look like a 3rd grade courts half grass/half dirt in no time just does not feel like what it is advertised: " the greatest tournament in the world", one BBC commentator went as far as calling it the greatest sport event in the world... right, wishful thinking that is.

Truth is Wimbledon is an old fashioned tournament with courts which are not adequate for playing 2 weeks straight, and they are trying to stay relevant by claiming they are the best and most prestigious. Since everyone has heard this song since they were little kids, they all believe this is true. I agree with Uncle Tony Nadal on this one, Wimbledon is just overrated. Even Lendl skipped it at some point claiming that grass is for cows...

What do you think of this Wimbledon, and of Wimbledon in general as a GS tournament?

I agree totally. On one hand I really appreciate what Wimbledon and the British have provided and brought to the world. On the other hand, obviously they are behind the times and they do this song and dance. I say switch to artificial grass (some quality tennis focused turf) if that's possible. Playing that long of a tournament on grass is like playing with wooden racquets - to keep the tradition.

Yes, and no. Yes, in that it really has no more actual worth than any of the other majors in this day and age, so people need to stop treating it like it's the Super Bowl of tennis or something. No, in that most of the arguments that people make against it are pretty dumb, like basically all of the ones you have mentioned in the OP. If people don't like playing tennis in a trench after a week, maybe they should rush the net.

No, the net area would become like that if they spent as much time there as they do at the baseline. If play was more balanced out then the grass would wear more evenly.
