The Incredible Collapse Of Saggy Sock!

Win a MS1000 title, play deep into WTF, reach top10, all in 2017 and now collapse to an 8-23 record in 2018!

Where is the bottom after climbing near the top? I feel for the guy, having seen the similar collapse just four years ago of the guy who stuck a fork in him today from a set down, the Lord Ernests.

Can he find his singles game again or will he focus on top 10 dubs results?

Discuss or Disgust, as you wish.

Didn't expect Sock's collapse turns out more than Bouchard.
Bouchard finish 12-18 and inside top 50 end of year 2016.
While Sock is 6-18 so far and will fell outside top 100 if he failed to gain any points till Paris.

I have a feeling he’ll focus on what he does best...Doubles. He has potential to be a solid Top 10/15 doubles player.

I suspect Sock rested on his laurels during the off-season as far as the diet goes and its hurt his movement. He's able to get away with that in doubles, but you see it in his game some of the time.

WTA is full of Socks. It's sport. Not everyone can stay on top for decades. And one can still make really good money by winning GS doubles – he earned 1 million this year FFS.

Yeah but is there any player male/female (This is not yet, still have 2 weeks to go) gone from top 10/Make WTF to outside top 100?

*He needs 175 points to be in top 100

Bouchard (even before her hit the floor moment)? Mladenovic is on her way out. Makarova is spared the same fate only because of her decent GS runs this year. Cibulkova was the WTF champion in 2016 and didn't win anything since. It's not that drastic as with Sock, but the pattern is the same and there are def more cases.

Round 2 of the Saggy Sock vs Lord Gulbis sockfest will take place in the fedr invitational at Basel. The Lord gained a SE entry and lord fedr granted Jacques Chaussette a last minute WC and enters as the #5 seed.

Wasted away again in federerville

Looking for my lost top 100 rank.

Some people claim there’s a Gulbis to blame

But I know I know it’s my own damn tank

I'll give the lad a little leeway and say that he did have hip issues at the start of this season which might have been the catalyst for his singles collapse. Sock will have to consider playing challenger tournaments to raise his singles ranking next year, I think he's coming to a crossroads where either he focusses on doubles or singles.

At #154 in The Race he’s not getting anything but qualies at ATP/slams except in weeks with three 250’s scheduled. That could change quickly if he does knuckle down and gets some results. I hope he gets to the level where he can get DE dubs and qualies for singles at the bigger tournaments.

I just just watched a recording of the Basel match against Ernests. Love Ernests, don't like Jack. "The Saggy Sock of Despair" reminds me of one of the spoiled, rich jerks that served as villains in the old John Hughes films of the 1980s. Not smart, feels entitled, not much to like. Did I say I love Ernests? The Lord is very smart and witty.

Too much money too quickly.

They all go through the process of:
-hungry for wins,
-begin winning/ ranking goes up,
-big money starts rolling in/ lifestyle changes,
-not as hungry for wins,
-begin losing/ ranking goes down,
-enough money still coming in to manage,
-complacency settles in,
-maintains mediocre results.

Finally I can join the only worthwhile club on TT.

Well, that's the first time I've ever heard of anyone blaming Ernesto's performances on coming into money. +10 internets for originality.
This is the Jacques Chaussette Collapse thread. Pay raise was steep for former fry boy.

I first read this title as "Soggy sock." That was a game my good buddy and I once played in college after one too many tequila shots.

We were playing singles that night, but Jack should definitely go for doubles. Sure, play some singles as a side hustle, but make your day job doubles all day long. He's one of the best, if not the best, "half-court specialists" in the world, as he referred to himself at Laver Cup. When people mention the male-female tennis pay disparity with five sets, that's the argument that sometimes sways me — women are much better positioned to play doubles. Men can tire themselves out because of the five-set grand slam requirements and therefore have to choose where to put their energy.

I wonder if he can get Pospicil back? A well-made mixtape and a heartfelt plea should do the job.

The thread is about Sock right?
Hm, that does make more sense. -10 internetz for me

I admitedly have a hard time thinking straight when seeing a picture of Ernie drinking a glass of milk at what appears to be a bar.

Back to Sock, I kinda feel his generation of american players (Sock, Harrison, Johnson, Querrey, seemingly Fritz, too) got suckered into an ineffective/passé playing style, big forehands and big serves, average backhand and movement, based on the Roddick model. If you look at the '90s americans (ah, the good ol' '90s), Sampras, Agassi, Chang, Courier, they all had different games.
I wonder if the problem with Sock and co. is that the coaching and talent selection is too homogenized, and doesn't help the players develop other aspects of their games. Sock has good hands, and I get that the singles game doesn't suit that right now, but I feel like camping him at the baseline shouldn't be his go-to tactic.

Chaussette donut have a backhand, let alone a DTL backhand, that opens the court enough to safely approach the net in this poly era.

Coaches could have worked on his slice? Seems to work decently for Flopez.
Deliciano is a natural ohbh player. The more appropriate comparison would be to compadre Steve Johnson, who does use the one-handed slice but still has too much a tendency to run around the backhand to hit off-forehands and play from the baseline.

His coach is Mark Knowles, who did play ohbh and could probably help Chaussette transition to a Wilander late career adaptation to mixing in ohbh with the double fisted staple. Maybe he’ll read this and get cracking on this offseason, now at least a week longer than last year.

I agree about Lopez, and the comparison to Johnson. But that sort proves my point, Lopez has never had a great topspin backhand, but his slice has always been solid. Johnson's slice is okay, but I'm pretty sure it's not something he worked on very much until later in his career. I suspect Lopez did work on his when he was younger, which leads me to question american coaches seemingly not working on this shot with any of their prospects 10-15 years ago.

I mean you can teach a solid 2-handed backhand, how many russians have bad backhands? Why can't/doesn't the US do it?

I would love to see any player say "I saw some guys on talk tennis mentionning the slice... so I tried it, and here I am, Wimbledon Champion".

That would be a nice @slice bh compliment but I would also expect a 10% gratuity for my tip.

Pretty big match for Sock today, cause it makes the difference between top 125 and top 150 roughly.

Anyone know if he's gonna enter challengers in the fall?

Due to his amazing performance against Frenchman Gasquet, French sport company has changed it's name to Le Soq Sportif!

Seriously though, it would be nice to see him get in shape and play challengers, cold harsh reality is awaiting after Paris.

The Nadal withdrawal opens up his section quite wider now. Maybe he runs deep and secures an AO MD DE.
