Winner?

One has to wonder what the strategy here is in the Federer camp. He just keeps trying to hit through. He needs better angles. Oh well. Guess this is why you cannot expect much from him against the best clay player of this generation.

Could be wrong but pretty sure if you check TB records on a player's fave surface it's better than on their worst surface even against most major rivals. One could say the winner has executed better mentality but they have a slightly more secure platform from which to do so due to level of comfort or the margins they can operate in within the conditions, or in a crude sense not all the strength manifests equally because one player has to fight more of a typical match-up edge (influenced by various factors) than the other.

In other words nadal is best on clay, fed on grass, djok on hard

Everyone criticizing Federer, nobody acknowledging the amount of times in a rally on massive or potentially massive points when Nadal has produced clutch winners. This isn't some all time choke job going on.

Yeah, Nadal's BH in particular has been quite something.

If things had gone Fed's way here or there, he could have easily won a set ... but he hasn't been playing badly, and tbh as much as I would have liked to have seen a different result, I think we Fed fans should be pleased with the way the clay-court season has gone.

And congratulations to Nadal fans, your man is playing very well here once again.

Why are Fed fans so negative here? The match is very close, considering most of his own fans were saying they weren't expecting him to win, hes giving us a good match.

Y'all need to remember hes playing the 2 time defending champ on clay.

I’m certainly ok with what i’ve seen. I might have hoped for more, but I think for his advanced age he’s given it a fair try. But I understand Fed fans frustrations; we’ve seen this movie a few times...

Can’t go after watching this match and the conditions but Djokovic has a chance if the conditions are cloudy and cool. If it’s sunny not much of a chance.
Conditions won't be sunny.

To me Nadal's serve is the main weakness.
Fed has not been able to break as much. But Novak will make him pay in every single game, and break Rafa continuously.

also ngl kind of annoyed when people act like its shockin if you dont appreciate this match up or part of the big 3, sorry i enjoy a certain type of tennis that is clearly a dying breed given how tennis seems to be heading

Fed had the game to beat Rafa here in 05,06,07,11 where he had the movement, speed and baseline consistency (if he played 07 win huge FH like 05-06 and reduced UFE) but never pulled it off. No chance here, Nadal too good, big FHs out of nowhere to hit winners.
It's actually his backhand that's given more shocking winners.

The only chance Fed had today was to serve superbly and hit extraordinary shots. The wind pretty much took care of that.

there is such a huge difference in defense between these two on clay.

on the stretch nadal makes 60% of the shots, and 30% of them are strong

Fed makes 20% of those shots. its not that he cant get to them...its that he doesnt have the same strength to muscle those balls from those positions.

For 10 more minutes and then can we expect you to come back for 2020 Monte Carlo?

Or maybe Rome given how Nadal almost got bageled by Fognini this year.
Well Nadal has outperformed Federer at the US Open last 3 years and even outperformed him at Wimbledon last year.
