Which slam if only one?

For you Rafa fans, would you rather Rafa win AO20, or RG20 if he can't win both. Obviously he does have a decent shot at winning both, but what would you rather have happen?

Catch is if he wins AO20 you catch Fed earlier, but then have the disappointment of not closing it at RG. But you also get double career grand slam.

If he wins FO, you have to wait longer, but you don't have a let down feeling, and you miss out on double career grand slam, at least this year.

Just curious, as I think Djoker is going to be more of a threat at RG next year, but might start the season slower than normal.

Hmm.. good question. The greedy part of me says AO20, but losing at RG would likely mean the early end of the season for Rafa, too much of a confidence damage. So I’m taking RG.

Unless he beats Djokovic in AO final, then I might change my mind.

Not Nadal fan. AO easily. GOAT status in on the line. With RG is 20-20(if Fed doesn't win AO), still Fed is ahead of Rafa.

Given the choices, AO20.
Unfortunately, Fedr will win both AO20/RG20. Too much experience at 39, and will peak next season. :happydevil:

Add an option "not a rafa fan" as well

I think if Rafa were to somehow win AO, there will be no stopping him at RG.

Its difficult to say what I would rather, as it will be a sad day when Nadal gives up his domination at RG.

Probably the AO, since distribution is a big thing on here, that would go a decent way towards people accepting his 20 slams being as good as Feds.
Since 13 clay slams 'don't count'

Interesting question. I'm feeling surprisingly torn given how much I want that second AO title for him. For me I think it depends on how he loses at RG - if he goes out to someone like Thiem or Med before the final, I'd take the AO title. If it was to Fed or Djoko or any other guy in a final? Miss me with that, I'll take RG over AO.

At this point in his career, time is of the essence, so I'd hope he wouldn't pack up the season early for anything but a very grave injury. He's hopefully learned that lesson from this year, when he had another disappointing AO final then had injury in IW. Almost ended his season, if he had he'd be sitting at 17 slams.

AO for me, double slam would be huge. Obviously RG would be a letdown, but as long as the loss wasn't due to injury (say Thiem found a new clay peak) then he could still have a reasonable chance at the last two slams.

RG.

In future, anyone can surpass 20 GS, anyone can win double career slams. But if Nadal win 15 RG, that record will be there forever.

Any way, it is a very unlikely scenario we are discussing here. If Rafa is good enough to take AO, nothing except for injury will stop him at RG, and this time he won’t make the same mistake as in 2009 and overplay early in the season, making the case of AO "+" RG "-" even more unlikely.

Rafa is not unbeatable on clay anymore, as he used to be, so I wouldn't take anything for granted. Hope he can still win it for a few more years but nothing's set in stone. That's what makes his slams so special nowadays, you never know if it may be the last (you could say the same for Federer and Djokovic too, I suppose).

The Monte-Carlo-Madrid stretch of disappointment was more anomaly than tendency if you ask me. His real clay level is what we saw in Rome and Paris, just couldn’t find it fast enough because of mental setback after IW injury.

All of them!!!
Would hurt the most to not get RG probably, as used to him having that one all the time.
Maybe I want USO more than AO, as deep down I feel USO is a more prestigious slam than AO, grew up thinking like that.

Whatever, a slam is a slam. Of course he has only 1 Australian open but adding to so much Roland Garroses is also incredible.

So Nadal is GOAT if he ties Fed with 20? Never mind that he has 2 less years ranked #1 as Fed? And please don't mention the OGM as some kind of defining thing, nor H2H. Off the top of your head, what's the Lendl-Connors H2H? Both have 8 majors, so their H2H should be so integral, right?

another AO for Rafa will do much more for his legacy and resume than 5 more FO.

Wow.

Again, care to explain how adding another 5 FO to an already clay Godlike career will be more beneficial to being the first and possibly only man ever to have the double career slam, especially after being so unlucky in Melbourne?

Easily Australian Open. The man has 12 Roland Garros titles, twice as many as any other dude in history, more titles at a single slam than any other person in history, if he never set foot in Paris again I'd be just fine (with apologies to Guy Forget).

2020 FO for a second AO easily. The only circumstance that would change it would be losing the FO to Federer or an injury that would prevent a run at Wimbledon, his last Olympics, and the USO.
