Anybody else notice the Blues Brothers music at 15:16? I can’t remember the artists name because I played the song in my middle school jazz band but it’s in blues brothers.

It's quite astonishing to see how much potential djoko's game had to hurt nadal. That cc backhand would take even 2008 claydal out of position. It was only a matter of time djoko started hurting nadal with that pattern of play. But to be able to pull of that pattern against nadal you must have a GOAT level backhand and a superhuman level consistency both of which djoko possesses and no doubt he has hurt rafa the most

Yes, but most importantly you must have stamina/endurance to pull it off over 3+ hours, that Djokovic didn't have before 2011.

What's the use of playing him neck and neck for half a set, if you fall apart after a couple of long exhausting games and lose 6-2? It happened quite a few times.

Prime Kohlschreiber makes all the difference.
Nadal lost to Soderling in the fourth round of RG 2009. Does it mean he wasn't in his prime as well? Nadal and Djokovic played 3 very close physical matches during the clay season in 2009 and were probably done after that. Yes, Djokovic was close to his prime level on clay in 2008-2009, he was playing well and pushing peak Nadal to the limit.

No. Not being able to sustain high level even throughout the best of 3 match for whatever reason (fatigue, old age etc.) is the very definition of post/pre prime tennis ability of an ATG, which is very obvious if you compare that to post 2011 Djokovic. I don't recall him falling off the cliff in a single post 2011 match after a couple of gruelling games. It was a certainty back in 2008-2009.

Your claim that 2008 Hamburg Djokovic wins 2016 RG holds no weight, as it is similar to someone else saying 2011 Indian Wells Nadal wins 2009 AO... But worse.

Djokovic was more impressive on clay in 08-09 than he has been the past few years for sure IMO. I guess 2011 was his clay peak, the way he was smoking Nadal.

2011-2016 Djokovic is his prime. Before that he was merely very good.

Nadal usually had another gear back then if his opponents were playing great, like we seen in the 3rd set.

But, as said above, I agree that Djokovic was a big challenge, even then for Nadal. The signs were there that he was going to be a big problem in years to come if he got himself together.

Uncle Toni always says they realized this too early in Novaks career.

Djokovic was physically fine in this match. Just because the third set was 6-2 doesn't mean it wasn't close. The second set was also 6-2, just in the other direction. In Madrid 2009 they played for 4 hours and the score was 3-6 7-6 7-6, was Djokovic tired after a few games as well? For comparison, he won only 1 set in 3 matches against Nadal in 2012. So he wasn't in his prime in 2012 as well? And in RG 2014 final Djokovic looked tired after 2 sets and lost to a very bad Nadal. Not in his prime too? I wonder when was his prime then.

Didn't quite turn out that way at RG.

Well according to Djokovic fans, Nadal got away with a few because of the wind, injury, or getting lucky not having to face him in 2011...
2011 was the only question mark.

Other than that, their other matches were routine wins for Nadal except 2013.

Who would you have favoured in 2011 had he gone past Fed ?
Really tough to say. It's still Nadal at RG, but he was mentally beaten by Djokovic at that point similar to Fed at Wimb 2008, but Fed had to play him right away unfortunately, while Nadal didn't with Djokovic.

Just like AO 2012 for Djokovic. Mirrored matches.
I would prefer Nadal to win in 4 sets. Because now Djokovic fans are using this match as a "proof" that he is Nadal's equal in RG. Let's not forget it wasn't peak Nadal in 2013. If that was 2008 Nadal he would have won in straight sets, maybe in 4 at worst case. In 2013 he was prime, but not peak.

A great match and a great win by Nadal over a very good Djokovic. Yes, Djokovic wasn't in his absolute peak form, but he was certainly in his prime at this time. Djokovic had a lot of momentum heading into this match, he had won AO, and dethroned Nadal at IW, then also went onto win Rome masters...he was knocking on the door of becoming the world number two. Nadal was playing this match on cay court conditions that didn't suit his game as much, Hamburg clay has a much lower bounce, more suited to Djokovic.

An underrated classic that often gets overlooked because of the way Djokovic stood up to Nadal the following year on clay, following him around like a killer shadow.

And somehow Djokovic ended that year as no.3 only 10 points behind Federer.

That Wimb early upset screwed him completely.

Nadal played a great tournament here. He defeated Murray, Djokovic, and Federer. A few weeks later he raised his level even higher at RG.

How many times have any member of 'the big 4' beaten the other 3 in a tournament?

Even when one or more weren't at peak?

No, not on clay. He was close to his prime level on clay in 2008-2009. Djokovic in 2008 pushed Nadal harder than he did in 2012 which you call a prime year.
RG and Rome were pretty close in 2012 though. Only MC was easy. 2008-09 was a prime Djokovic on clay pretty much all the matches were hard fought.

Such great hitting and movement in this match. Every square inch of the court was hit to, and covered - and we saw it all - great angles, put-away and drop volleys, lobs and topspin lobs, overheads (no negative Djokosmashes here, I don't think). Just great tennis.
