Is Nadal playing Paris to protect Federer’s #1?

I have to say I’m surprised that Nadal will be playing in Paris. I wonder if the reason is that he wants to gain some points and protect Federer’s weeks at no.1 record? I’m pretty sure it’s impossible for this year but maybe it will be enough to be no.1 early next year before 310? Fedal have a very solid friendship so I wouldn’t be surprised.

Notice how Djokovic is always trying to get attention but Fedal are not really paying attention to him.

Possibly. No question there does seem a Fedal v Djokovic narrative this year. I cannot see why Nadal would play Paris or WTF.
Unless he wants some practice off clay before AO.

Djokovic is overall the better and more consistent tennis player. For Nadal to stop him in the #1 records hunt he'll need Djokovic to start pulling out of events and underperform heavily. There is no stopping Djokovic, sorry haters.

djokovic still trails 3 in the slam count. AO is not a given for Djoko and the French is a slam away.

not the time to get cocky. Djokovic can take the tiebreaker metrics, Nadal will take the slams.

20-20-17 says otherwise.
The answer is it’s unlikely. Nadal made the SF of Paris last year (earning 360 points) so the only way he can gain points is to make the final. He could end up with an additional 640 points if he wins the tournament which is not a guarantee considering his career indoor record.

Yesterday I saw a duck that had somehow wandered into my lawn.

But what really surprised me and had me doubting my sanity was that the duck was all suited up men on Black style and was carrying a case in one of his hands(wings?)

He looked at me and said " Your home is gonna get got smartass. It has been chosen by rabbit space liberation army as landing point for their troop arrival."

"That that sounds bad doesn't it?" Was all I could mutter.

"Luckily for you pigeon face, I have contacts in the higher ups ,If you will give me 5 donuts, your house will be spared and the coordinates will be shifted two units to your neighbor's house. After they blow up your neighbor's you can take advantage of the situation and start a relationship with his daughter. What say you idiotface?"

" Errr umm .Err" .

I gave him the donuts.

Now today there's a black mini canyon where my neighbor's house was.

And I have agreed to let my neighbor's daughter live with me while they undergo treatment.

Oh you think this ain't true? Well it's less RIDICULOUS than your thread premise.

Alien rabbits will be invading earth before fierce competitive athletes start playing to save their rival's record.

No.

Nadal is playing Paris to keep competitive practice ahead of next season. He did say that such a long break backfired at him.
Exactly, that's the key reason in my opinion too.

I think it's probably got more to do with not wanting to go into the World Tour Finals cold than Paris itself.

I don't think Nadal gives that much of a sh*t about the #1 records. Nor do I think Nadal cares about trying to save anyone else's records. He plays for himself and just wants to be healthy and continue playing at the highest level and giving himself the best chance at winning majors. The big 3 are old and they're well aware of it. The pressure is on them to try to keep the young generation away and it's becoming more and more difficult with each passing year.

The old guys should be retired by now so there is no expectations yet they are dominating. How can that be pressure?

I just mean that the world #1 being taken to 5 sets by mental mug Tsitsipas at RG shows that there is some real resistance happening. And I don't see it getting easier. There will be an end. It's inevitable. A new generation will rise ultimately. It's exciting to watch and seeing how the big 3 are still adding to their majors count. But I think they are breaking down a bit year after year. Djokovic for example is becoming more and more irritated on the court when lower ranked players are fighting him toe to toe. He might bring a gun to the court at some point with the way he's going. :-D

I sincerely think this is for securing the 2nd seed at AO. Nobody wants to face djoker in sf and avoid him as long as possible at ao.

I am sure Nadal would like a few more weeks at No.1. Would help him quieten those who think No.1 means more than slams.

This take is way too reasonable. This thread is reserved for nonsense speculation and I would ask you to take your leave.

I'm sure Nadal gives an effing eff what a bunch of irrelevant scrubs think!
Meanwhile look at that yacht! If more guys went out and practiced tennis or any sport instead of talking sh*t on this forum, maybe they could enjoy an ounce of his success.

I love how these Fed fans have all now jumped on the “Fedal” train and trying to make it seem as if all of Rafa’s achievements are somehow shared with or is for Fed...cant look more needy and groveling trying to suck up with Fed’s so called biggest rival who literally made Fed cry by eating him over and over....karma I say lol

Djokovic is currently +1890.

Nadal is not a shoe-in to win Paris nor Djokovic to win Vienna. Both will have genuine competition. But presuming they both win these tourneys, Nadal will be +720 and Djokovic +500, reducing the gap to 1670 heading into WTF.

So realistically, Nadal can only take back #1 if he outperforms Djokovic at AO 2021.

If the gap is ~1500 headed into AO 2021, Nadal will re-take #1 by reaching the SF (+360) and with a Djokovic SF loss to Thiem (-1280)

Thanks for the information. But what if Djokovic withdraws from next year's AO, will he keep the 2,000 points from this year since he had won it? That could be a strategy to secure the weeks at no.1 record? I know that he won't do that, but I'm trying to understand how this new rankings system is working.

Presumably the new system only impacts 2020 and beginning in 2021, your newly recorded result will be the one that counts.

Points won't be dropping until March 2021. The gap is currently 1890, but that's functionally 2090 since Djokovic is dropping 200 fewer WTF points. Assuming Nadal wins WTF and Djokovic gets nothing after Vienna, that'll be a 370 point gap. Nadal would need to outperform his ATP Cup performance and reach the AO SF or just reach the AO final to overtake Djokovic.

And that's assuming Djokovic gets 0 points at the WTF and Nadal wins it without a loss.

It means that if Djokovic doesn't play the 2021 AO would he keep his 2,000 points from the 2020 AO?

Also in your scenario for this year if Nadal wins Paris but Djokovic loses early in Vienna, the gap could be less than 1500 heading into WTF?

No he wouldn't based on the ATP release:

In anticipation of a return to competition in August, the Rankings, which traditionally operate on a "Best 18" results basis over 52 weeks, will now cover a period of 22 months (March 2019 – December 2020).

This makes it sounds like points will begin to drop in January 2021.

Yes Nadal can in theory gain a bigger + with Paris/Vienna but it's not really likely.

All I remember is a thread I saw here. https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/atp-extends-rankings-rules.681358/

Can't find any additional info on it, so it could be untrue, but this is what I've heard.

It's not true:

In 2021, points will drop based on their standard scheduled drop date when the Tour-level event is played.
