I wish he confirmed it with a good run in Rotterdam. Or maybe doing well in Marseille.

Nevertheless, taking a glance at the ATP rankings in 10 days and seeing which players are in the top two... Perfection!

I'm confused. I thought he had to win Marseille? Did Nadal withdraw from something?
Half of the points from IW 2019 will be deducted. Nadal will lose 180 out of 360 for advancing to SF, while Medvedev will lose only 22/23 points out of 45. The difference between Nadal and Medvedev is now 115 points. Medvedev will have a lead of at least 42 points over Nadal on March 15.

Sad way to get to No 2

I would have respected more if he made it at Rotterdam

One can argue it is a result of all the prior work, but it is just that he got there when Nadal is playing part time and Fed not playing at all and that they are 35 and 40 (almost)

So Meddy literally flukes his way in without even earning it. I guess that's par for the course since it's the only way these guys are ever gonna warn anything significant.
Washington final, Canada final, won Cincy (2020 QF), USO final (2020 SF), won St. Petersburg (2020 2R), won Shanghai, won Bercy, won WTF, won ATP Cup, AO final. He's holding 3 masters 1000 and the WTF titles (that's the same or better results than 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 YE#1 players as far as this century goes). True, no slam wins, but 2 finals are a very respectable result (when Djokovic became #2 for the first time back in 2010 he got QF, 3R, QF, SF in slams and a Bercy title).

Is this the result of the ranking freeze? Kind of, but Nadal would still need USO 2020 SF to stop it if there was no such thing and no point in going to the if if if territory. Great achievement for Medvedev, though points dropping post Wimbledon Armagedon is coming.

Kind of went under the radar, but Tsitsipas finally got ahead of Federer this week. Might lose it, might not, next week with them both in action.

NVM forgot about Rome, he's even more legit than I thought he was.
All hail new #2 DANIIL!

It probably won’t be for long though.

If Rafa plays Miami he has no points to defend there and he is not going into any masters tournaments on clay as the defending champ either which is probably a first since 2005 for him.

Probably true on all accounts except he is carrying 1000 points for Rome in '19.

Will be weird to see the number 2 player in the world to be someone other than the Big 3. But Congrats to Meddy, he played well the last few months.

Yes, but the scoring is best of '19 or '20, and so he's defending '19 title points for Rome.

The tennis authorities were in such a panic mode that their well set up scheme with giving all the advantages to the top players might crumble that they are doubling and tripling down on their reassurances that that will not happen: extending points, doubling of points, picking best results - anything will do.

It would have been hilarious, if it wasn't sad.

Overall, there's little doubt for me Medvedev benefitted much more from COVID rankings than Nadal. Nadal missed out on improving on his 2019 clay season which was subpar by his standards. Meanwile, Medvedev basically maxed points for the entire post Wimbledon season which he'd never have done without burning out in a normal season.

Not to mention not losing any points in 2020 after his 2019 performances. Because he surely wouldn't have done as well in 2020 at those.
