Would Federer have won Wimbledon 2017 if Djokovic hadn't got an injury?

Federer has lost 3 finals against Djokovic and when Federer won in 2017, he didn't have to play Djokovic due to him having to retire with an injury in his match against Berdych.

Federer was in fine form that year and didnt drop a set all tournament. Djokovic was also in a transitional period at the time still trying to find his best form and struggling with injuries.

So I wonder would Federer have beat Djokovic that year if he had to play him?

No because 3-0 in finals LOL!! is end all and be all and form doesn't matter.

So Novak in 3.

Also get your facts straight OP, Djokovic is 9 time champion at AO, he didn't lose to Istomin. And he also didn't lose to Thiem in RG.

Djokovic has 2 RGs and has defeated Thiem in 2016 so there's no way he lost to him in 2017.

I have not got any facts wrong so I can only assume you have posted this bit in the wrong thread?

There's very little chance Federer would have won. But Djokovic was injured so it is almost totally irrelevant.

Why would there have been little chance? Djokovic was awful that year and didnt win a slam in 2017 whilst arguably 2017 was the best year of Federer's career.

Of course not. Fed was very lucky otherwise he would still be at 17. Novak would take care of him at WB as he already did in three finals taking crown from Fed to become King of Grass. Besides WB 2017 he also won AO 17&18 due to Novak's syrgical operation of elbow. Fed would lose easily to healthy Novak both times at Novak's fortress at AO as proven in the past. Fed was so lucky to evade Novak in 2017 and 2018 at WB and AO. But I must be honest also and give credit to Fed. He was persistant enough to be slamless since 2012 for long 5 years and steal 3 GS when Novak got injured. Bravo for his persistance. He truly cares a lot about records.

The question was whether Federer would have won if Djokovic wasn't injured. Given that the injury stretched back a year and a half the answer is clearly "No". An uninjured Djokovic wins it.

The narrative is that Djokovic was injured, real tennis fans know he was ducking Federer in 2017 because he didn’t want to get a hiding, even Berdych said so

I don’t know what is the purpose of all these hypothetical threads. What if this, what if that, whatever happened happened. You can’t go back in time.

Djokivc fans use the “Luck“ excuse way too much, Novak is in reality the luckiest player of all time. Federer wouldn’t still be stuck on 17, another nonsense excuse the djokovic fans use to make their guy look better than what he is, you all act as if Novak wasnt even playing, he entered the same tournaments as Federer and Roger won because Novak was too poor to win, simple as that

Novak is king of grass despite winning only 5 Wimbledon's to Federer's 8? Mmm right ok!

Also its very stupid to put Federer's Oz Open 17 and 18 wins down to luck. You dont win a major by just getting lucky. Djokovic entered both of those events and did not lose because of injury. He got beat by Istomin playing well above his level and then got smoked the following year by Chung.

There is no purpose and you are right, nobody knows what would have happened in a hypothetical match that didnt take place. I just thought it would be an interesting discussion.

Even hypothetical Djokovic is better than hypothetical Federer now. He is coming for everything. Which is why he has to choke away a Wimbledon title, in order to take all Federer's records.

I don’t want to even imagine what would happen to this forum if Djokovic wins the next two slams. The atmosphere is so toxic already since RG.

The same thing happened when Nadal was about to go ahead by equaling Federer's slam count and being so far ahead in H2H.

Federer's fanatics make this place very toxic when their hero's records are beaten -as they so often are these days.

Yes Federer was in great touch, he would have won 2017 even with Djokovic in it for sure.
Technically he should have won 2019 too but something freaking happened, in 2017 he was in much better form and on the confidence of the AO, he would have won for sure.

2015 was a different year, Djokovic was playing extremely well that year, so no excuses

2014, yes, Fed should have won that too, totally ruined it

I might be new to this forum, but I was already here when this happened. I haven’t seen the toxicity you’re talking about. In the contrary, Fed fans were very gracious in accepting the fact.

Fed was playing his best ever grass tennis to date in 2015, and still got shut down in 4.

Djokovic takes this in 4/5

Depends on the choking. Fed played good 2017, didnt lose a set, definetly had the game to beat Djoker, but you actually have to win a match point to win the match. Its weird he turned into such a massive choker at one point, he used to be the tie break king.

I will ask the opposite question - would Djokovic have won Wimbledon 2018 had Fed converted his MP against Anderson in the third set?

Novak in 2018 Wimbledon, up until the final, faced zero servebots, zero grasscourters, and Nadal under roof-closed condition (and by the end of the 3rd set he was already heavily gassed and only saved by daybreak - which was only a thing thanks to Isner/Anderson). The 2018 Wimbledon SF up until the daybreak was essentially the 2021 RG SF but with Nadal winning 3rd set tiebreak.

There is no one more toxic here than you.

I have never seen you speak anything remotely +ve for Federer in my last 5 months in this forum. You always have to bring down Federer with your -ve comment.

You need to first start talking positive about Federer and then you can expect positive talks of Nadal and anyway posters here are quite respective to the big 3.....

Exactly my thought. Novak's team and family wanted him to take a break after 2016 WB. He made the wrong decision to play full year and fight Murray for the YE#1, which almost ended his career and certainly ended Murray's.
He further made the wrong decision to refuse surgery.
I' m saying all these because 2021 could be another burn-out year for Novak. I prefer him playing 3-5 more years healthy than winning the Golden CYGS and burning out.

He did lose to Chung partly because of injury. He played through pain the whole tournament and had to have surgery a few weeks later.

Federer in 4 probably, something similar to their 2012 match. He would have won but would have dropped a set (which he didn't the whole tournament).

There's a huge difference between Cilic and Djokovic obviously {with '14 USO being the lone outlier)!

The same could be said for '18 AO, and Federer needed 5 sets for the finals win over Cilic.

Djokovic was terrible in 2017, plus it would have been a semi.
We can't magically bring the best version of Djokovic to play Fed in 2017. Had Djokovic beat Berdman, Fed would have beaten him pretty comfortably

Nole was 6-6 in 2018 he was in horrible form but he saw Nads in Wimby Semi 2018 and he got up for that match even though his form was horrible, he may get up for the Fed match if he gets passed Birdman in 17.
