Hey what about Thomas Johansson, he played well but he do got easy draw and underperforming Marat.
What are your view about his win
Prefer him over someone like Gaudio. At least he did something besides that slam win.

I've never understood equating a tennis player to an athlete with the most precise footwork and body control as being an insult - I always considered this a huge compliment. I guess that's just me.

Gaudio didn't disappear after the French Open of 2004. He also qualified for the masters cup of 2005. That was when Federer gave him a double bagel iirc. He was a top ten player for 2 years more or less, until mid 2006. After that he fell apart very quickly, which wasn't such an unusual thing back then. Before the big 3, it was expected for most players to fall apart in their late 20s.

Gaudio belonged to the age in which 30-40% of the top 100 was made of clay court specialists like Kuerten, Costa, Corretja, Mantilla, Moya etc, and the french open was won mostly by them, with people like Agassi or Kafelnikov being exceptional. And within that group, Gaudio was considered a very talented underachieving basketcase with a great one hander. He won Conde de Godo in 2002 beating Albert Costa 64 60 62, and later lost in 5 sets to Ferrero in the French Open (Ferrero would lose the final to Albert Costa)
His head to head against all the good clay courters of that age was quite competitive

5-8 against Ferrero
2-1 against Costa
2-4 against Safin (all matches on clay)
1-2 against Agassi (all matches on hardcourt)
2-1 against Kafelnikov
2-4 against Moya
4-0 against Mantilla
3-3 against Kuerten
3-3 against Nadal (the 3 victories against pre prime Nadal)
2-3 against Coria

only Federer and Corretja owned him
corretja leads 6-1, Federer 5-0

Anyone who wins a major deserves it. LOL at anyone saying that Rios deserves the 1998 Australian Open. Did you see how bad Rios played in that final?

Federer has one ballerina sequence moment and earns ballerina status. Those ballerinas with screwed up feet retired at 22 probably have something to say about it!

I mean it's not like there's anyone closer is there?

Depends how you determine such things. He didn't cheat, went through a decent draw and even had a decent follow up year.

For me it's binary, you either deserve it or don't deserve it so no such thing as being closer to not deserving.

Thomas Johansson had a quite easy draw, he had to beat Bjorkman and Jiri Novak to reach the final, where he played a hungover Safin

the Safin half was very hard, with matches like Rios Haas, Safin Sampras, Safin Haas, while the Johansson half had collapsed from upsets, with Hewitt and Kuerten losing in first round

@Third Serve going to write the same thing, Thomas was the only one from atp side came close with weak draw in last few years.
Others One slam winners went through decent draw.

Agreed. It’s just a sign of low intellect.

Back in his days, McEnroe said that he was given substances not admitted to be used on horses, or something of the sort.
Agassi's body was a lab of interesting things when he needed to show to play after 30 years old.
