Asics Gel Resolution 9

Update on my experience with the GelRes9s:
  • Super happy with them! These are my first paid of Asics tennis shoes and I now see why they have such a following.
  • Prior shows were Nike Vapor Pros (and the prior iterations - Vapor X, Vapor Tour 9.5), and the GelRes9s are so much better than the Vapor Pros.
  • Sizing: I wear a 9.5 in the Nikes, and the 9.5 was the right fit for me in the GelRes9s. Also tried a size 9, the length and width fit well but the shoe didn’t have enough volume, so it felt tight over the top of my foot.
  • I have 100% flat feet, but normal width and those shoes fit perfectly.
  • They have much better cushioning and support compared to the Vapor Pros (they feel like sandals compared to these) and the Dynawall is really great. Can feel it stopping my foot as I’m sliding.
  • No issues with the Dynawall making the shoe feel narrow or any pressure points on the side of my feet.
If you end up liking them a lot... I got a posting for this size on the FS section. ;)

Are you a big hardcourt slider? Are you finding them easy to slide in?

Yes, easy to slide in…but a tad more grip than the Vapor Pros. The thing I hated about the Vapor Pros was the plastic piece…when sliding, the plastic would touch and it’d be like I was sliding on ice.

Hard to quantify but how much harder to slide? I am a former GR8 user and current Vapor Pro user and am finding the VPs far easier to slide in. Also, were you able to slide straight out of the box?

Yes, able to slide right out of the box. As for effort, yeah tough to say but what I can say is when I was on the full run and put my foot down, it slid. Didn’t think it was that much harder. I felt it gave me more foot support while sliding

I just got the 9's...and they feel a little weird. I've played through 3 pairs of 8's and obviously liked them, but for some reason the 9's feel like there's a bump right before my toes, where its slightly raised. I took out the insoles and put in my own, and still feel it. I don't see anyone else commenting that they feel this, so not sure what's going on. Its immediately the first thing I noticed because its very noticeable. Has anyone else noticed this? Maybe the bump will go down when I play more?

I have not, maybe a defective pair?

How much was the lace at asics store? I am finding it hard to find navy or indigo blue.

I also want to add that removing/replacing the laces made the uppers way more comfortable. The short, flat factory laces had zero give and didn’t allow any wiggle room for the tongue.

Well I just returned my 9's. They feel slightly more narrow than the 8's, which were already on the narrow side. But really the main reason I returned them was it felt like I had to fight the shoes to get on my toes due to the padding at the ball of my foot. Sticking with my 8's for now, hopefully the new Barricades are good.

I do notice when I'm moving my orthotic insoles from one shoe to another, the toe straps (attached to the hazard green strapping on my shoes above) are attached to elastics, one on each side. That would make a total of two on each side to include the tongue's. That's four elastic straps total per shoe. Either one of those have a tendency to curl up and make your feet feel like there's a foreign object in there. I have to remove my insole, make sure all the elastic straps are flat and flush, then reinsert my orthotics.

Mail call! Not for me but just as exciting.

BTW, wifey was not a fan of how snug the GR9s were. She said they felt like the shoes were tight and caving in on her. That and they felt heavy and clunky.

I ended up returning hers at the local Asics outlet. Hope whoever finds her pair gets the same steal of a price as I did.

I keep trying Asics shoes again and again, and they continue to disappoint. The Gel Res 8 and now they 9s are super narrow, lack proper cushioning and really crush your forefoot with the lacing system they now use IMO. The Court FF series get less comfortable and less comfortable with each new generation - the FF3 are like having rocks under your heels. The Speed line lacks stability and enough cushion. I know there are a lot of dedicated Asics fans out there, but to me - from my playlists - brands like Babaolat, Yonex, Lotto, and Diadora are building better shoes for less money right now.

You must have a very rare kind of foot, ASICS shoes are among the best on the market right now…

I assumed that the GR8 would have a loose upper and be roomy. I was wrong. They felt narrow at first. and out of the box they Killed my feet during the first session. But after wearing them to walk around, once broken in they are great shoes. I agree with the comment on the lacing system. It is easy to over tighten the front. and once you do overtighten they don't loosen themselves up to allow your foot to settle in. But after finding the right method and tightness, they feel secure.

Should the shoe adjust to the player not the other way around? Yes. I've always worn Nike and adidas but ready for a change. I'm glad i stuck with it. Looking to try the GR9 soon

GR7 (since 5 apparently) seem to lack some frontal cushioning, but I play on clay and I love GR8s with runners knot. GR7 had a stich inside the upper that caused me raw blisters due to hammer toes...
I would try GR9, except that I have 3 new pairs of GR8 stocked.

Just tried these out at the local store. Have to be the most comfortable tennis shoe I put on in a long time. The FF3s were rubbing the inside of my arch even though they initially felt just as good. Between these and the Lav 2s will be my next purchase if the vapor 11s don't fit.

So I keep hearing. That said, I have not had good luck with there shoes the last 5 years. Perhaps it is just me - although I see a lot of other posts from other players with issues too. One thing for sure, the FF3 heel cushioning is not good. Asics missed the mark on that one.

Try the Babolat Propulse Fury 3. It is surprisingly good! Comfortable, stable, durable, good traction, and quick. Check them out before you buy the Vapor 11s for sure.

The Resolution lacing system CRUSHED my foot. I was limping in them every time I played. Ever since they added the DYNAWRAP™ technology in the eyestay which they claimed was "strategically redesigned to apply pressure when extra support is needed. This allows you to experience a locked-in feel when you're making quick transitions" in the Gel Res 8 these shoes have been painful to wear.

Tried them on as well, super comfortable almost casual runner like — just vibed with the res 9 and lav 2s a bit more. Will probably pick up one of each if the 11s are no bueno

The DYNAWALL killed the outside of my feet. The Gel Resolution 9 are the most painful shoe I have every worn.

As someone who is better at looking like a Tennis player rather than playing tennis , i need those shoes to match my Head Extreme rackets to obviously distract my opponent even more.
Ha! I currently have the Res 8 Tokyo shoes and bright neon Radical which almost matches and colors are obviously very loud. I've had people comment on it, but I'm not sure they've ever been distracted. Though I'm guessing you mentioned this as tongue-in-cheek.

I found you criticizing GR8, GR9 and FF3 on multiple sites including YT. I understand you might not like these shoes but keeping posting negatives in multiple comments over multiple sites looks a bit suspicious.

Shoot. Was going to use the money I recouped from selling my GR9s to get those. Never mind.

I have two pairs of FF3s and love them. I am on court 6 days a week and find no problems with cushioning or my feet hurting.

They fit my foot very well and the playability is excellent.

Hi all
I bought 2 pairs of the resolution and now this is happenning very fast as i show in picture.
they have few hours of play but getting destroyed on the inside of foot.. they wont last long this way..
any suggestion if i can do something to prolong their life duration??
they have few hours of play, i dont understand how asics dont put a better protection here as this were supposed to be very durable shoes.

thank you!

Lol look at him in the adidas threads. Same **** as here. Dude has an agenda. He always makes all encompassing statements like he's the authority and posts it multiple times in all threads as well as TW reviews.

Here he says the FF3 "crushed" his foot and also said he expected the Cybersonic to cause injuries lol. Maybe the dude just has really jacked up feet

@The Big Kahuna definitely has an agenda....look at this guy spread the propaganda about the Fury 3!

@Babolat Official is he on the payroll??

I would like to nominate a shoe for your next TOP 5 list - the BABOLAT PROPULSE FURY 3. I have tried all the top five shoes on this list, and I have to say, these are pretty sweet! They are very well balanced shoe with great stability. A nice performing shoe all around. Cushioning is good, fit is medium, maybe a smidge generous compared to something like a Barricade. This shoe is a better performing shoe all-around to the Asics Court FF3, the Asics Resolution 9, the Adidas Barricade, or any Nike shoe made today. It feels a bit like a Diadora Blushield shoe in terms of cushion but like a Barricade in terms of stability. Closest shoe I can think of to compare it to might be the Diadora B.Icon - which is high praise in my book. I just got my pair, but so far, I like it a lot. Definitely a shoe to try out. Could be the best shoe of 2023!
I agree with you on the Asics shoes. Not enough proper cushioning. Ther best alternative to a Barricade wearer I have found so far is the the BABOLAT PROPULSE FURY 3. They are very well balanced shoe with great stability. A nice performing shoe all around. Cushioning is very good, fit is medium, maybe a smidge generous compared to something like a Barricade. B.Icon is a great shoe, but have to agree with you on the durability. Hopefully the B.Icon 2 coming out addresses that issue. You might want to look at the BABOLAT PROPULSE FURY 3. I have tried all the shoes mentioned, and I have to say, these are pretty sweet! Definitely a shoe to try out. Could be the best shoe of 2023 IMO!
The lacing system in the Propulse Fury 3 needs to be cinched down a bit initially. Very easy to pull onnn the places and lockdown the entire shoe initially. That said, if you do not do that - as they wrap around your foot like a sleeve on both sides - I can see how you might get a "sloppy fit". I did not cinch my shoes up enough initially and I felt the same way. After I DID, however, it was a whole different story.

I have tried all the shoes on your list, and I have to say, the BABOLAT PROPULSE FURY 3 would be my pick! They are very well balanced shoe with great stability. A nice performing shoe all around. Cushioning is good, fit is medium, maybe a smidge generous compared to something like a Barricade. This shoe is a better performing shoe all-around to the Asics Court FF3 (poor cushioning), the Asics Resolution 9 (more poor cushioning), the Adidas Barricade (poor fit), or any Nike shoe made today. Could someone compare the GR9 to the GR7 or the Wilson Rush Pro 3 in fit and performance? The last Asics shoe I used was the Gel Resolution 7, and I switched to the Wilson Rush Pro 3 because it was a little roomier for my toes compared to the GR7 which pinched too hard. My feet also feel like they swell up a little bit (maybe from increased blood flow?) in the first 10 minutes of heavy playing to where with the GR7s I always had to rush to the bench and undo my laces to take my feet out of cramped prisons. With the Rush Pro 3s I didn't have that issue at all.

Been a Asics player since 1999 so it's quite a long time, I guess. Bought a pair of Resolution 9 and since then, I have sore knees, which I had never had before. Also, I don't feel quite as comfortable as in my usual Asics, feeling kind of too high in my shoes... Can't compare with R7 and 8, which I never wore.

I have read some posts here, not all. Ok, I am getting older too but... am I the only one with this issue?

If GR9s aren't good for sensitive knees, I might have to pass and stick with something that feels at least as plush as my Rush Pro 3s. Thanks for sharing your experience. It saved me from making a very expensive mistake.

Well, if I can help in any way, you're welcome :). That said, I have never ever had any knee issue so I was just wondering if it could be linked with a new pair of shoes. Maybe it's just a coincidence and the reason is something else, I'll have to figure out. For me, Asics have always been the best tennis shoes on the market and still are ; it's just that, maybe, the R9 is not for me, for some reason. I have a pair of used Speed, will wear them for a few hours and, if some are interested, I will post an update here.

Fwiw, I switched to the Res 9 from years of Nike Vapor Tour 9.5 and Vapor Pros. And, I had a triple ligament surgery in my left knee back in Jan 2020 (tore ACL, PCL, and MCL). The Res 9 have not affected my knees at all. I think it’s just all very personal.

I also wear insoles with mine (Tread Labs Dash insoles), so that might make a difference. However, I did play 1 or 2 matches in them without the insoles and didn’t have any issues.

Wow that sounds terrible, glad you're on the other side of the recovery and playing matches again.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the GR9. This certainly makes things more interesting. I'll have to make a decision between the GR9, Babolat ProPulse Fury 3, and Wilson Rush Pro 4. I wish there was a way to demo shoes.

If you’re in the U.S., and you create an ASICS.com account, they say you have 60 days to try the shoes (including wearing outside the house) and can return them if you’re not happy.
