Who do you guys think hits the hardest consistently out of all the guys? I'm not talking about one in a million type shots like Monfils's 120 MPH forehand, I'm talking about guys who really whack the crap out of almost every shot.

Please stop saying Nadal is the hardest hitter because he isn't. He may have the fastest swing, and the most spin, but that does not mean he is a hard hitter.

hard hitting = forward pace, not spin or necessarily racquet head speed.

I have to agree with you, but at the same time, everybody is entitled to their opinion... (no matter how wrong it may be)

I'm still not sure about this one, myself, but I'm leaning towards Gulbis.

Breaker is correct

Almagro hits the hardest ball. I saw him play and practice up close earlier this year at Indian Wells. No one I've seen hits a harder ball. Safin and Tsonga are up there with him.

I sat directly behind the centre court at the masters event in Cincinnati for the quarterfinal between him and Federer last year and he absolutely killed every ball, even on his serve. Clean, heavy on both sides and had Federer on a string for a large portion of that match. He lost because Federer has more variety of course but the sheer pace and heaviness to his ball are amazing in person, same with the two you mentioned and Berdych.

I'm sure if you saw players like gulbis, tsonga, or blake, you would change your mind.

gulbis tsonga blake or even gonzalez but gublis has some nasty groundstokes

and for those saying wheres nadal he hits the ball with huge topspin but that doesnt make him a hard hitter if it did then he would have great success on hard courts

Seconded. I saw him play at the Pilot Pen last summer and this guy absolutely KILLS the ball, I've also seen Gulbis play up close and this kid murders the ball as well. Those two are probably the biggest hitters I've ever seen play.



Wait a second I thought you were from England? What in god's name were you doing in Cincy?

since i think he's making one last stab at the tour, i'm going to add mark philippoussis to the list. maybe there's some footage of him in his earlier years on youtube, when he first hit the tour. he'd take this huge backswing, and just absolutely demolish the ball, sounded totally different from anyone else on tour.

Please. His forehand is his only really powerful shot. His first serve is pretty powerful too but not one of the most powerful by any means. His second serve is a sitting duck, his backhand is a dinky piece of garbage most times, and his returns are defensive and weak unless he gets really weak serves with tons of time to set up. He rarely volleys but they have little stick as well. Overall he isnt even close to one of the most powerful hitters although he has a massive forehand.

For him to be sitting 2nd on the poll so far based on only the power of one shot is a joke, and even on the forehand there are others on the poll who seriously rival him in power.

I went with Gulbis but he sacrifices any consistency by trying to hit the ball at 100% every shot so he pays a certain price. Power doesnt do you any good if you cant even keep a reasonable # of balls in the court but power alone I go with him.

Most of these guys only have one or maybe two powerful shots, so they shouldn't be considered. Gulbis has forehand, backhand, 1st serve, 2nd serve all among the hardest hit in the game.

I went with Gulbis.

Gonzalez used to be one of the hardest hitters off the forehand AND the backhand back when he played with reckless abandon, but he's changed his game a bunch since back then. Quite frankly, he was more interesting to watch back then.

Don't berate people for answering your question correctly. It's your fault for not wording the questio correctly. If you mean "forward pace" then say "forward pace". You just admitted Nadal has the fastest swing that also means he has the hardest hit.

i voted gulbis. the man is rediculous. he tries to KILL every shot. he definitely needs to go for higher percentage shots if he wants to climb into top 10.

OMG why is federer on the list?

I agree. The top 4 can definately crank it, but none of them are the hardest hitters on tour.

Gulbis is up there, I've seen Blake several times and Almagro hits harder.

I moved to Cincinnati two years ago with some family after living in Manchester for a long time (around 12 years), born in New Zealand though so big changes for me :). As much as Manchester is the greatest city on the planet, it really is kind of an..ehh..lower quality city than most in the States. At the moment I'm back in Manchester for the holidays gonna catch the Hull game Friday.

But yeah, Almagro and Gulbis kill the ball :)

i think that says something too....the top players use variety and or smart tactics to win unlike blake and gulbis and other 1 track minded players. i think once the power bashing players wake up and try to change thier tactics and strategies a bit, they will be forces to be reckoned with.

The top 4, well atleast and especialy Federer and Djokovic, can hit the ball as hard as almost anyone on that list. Because they can do so many other things with their shots their power is harder to appreciate.

The likes of James Blake, Thomas Berdych, Verdasco, arent harder hitters than the top 4. Just because it is the only thing these second rate (at best) players do well and the best players to many things well doesnt mean they are better even at that one and only thing they can do.

Great list, very accurate representation of the hardest hitters on tour.

Another vote here for Gulbis. Destroys the ball off of BOTH sides.

James Blake makes second serves and first serves that arent placed well wish they were never born. Im still freaking out over that return he hit against Jean Christoph Faurel a few years back. Like a 130 FH return.

He is not really a player anymore though, or atleast not one anywhere close to what he used to be. He would belong in a past players something poll.

In the youtube videos I see Gulbis consistently going to a one hand slice backhand to get the ball back over the net. In the video with Nadal the one big Gulbis shot at 1:05 looked more like a one in a million Monfil's shot as Nadal won most of the points in the video.

In terms of maximum power maybe it's Gulbis but the question was about consistent power. I voted for Federer. He hits hard often on both sides and hits it in the court most of the time when he goes for big power. Djokovic is the only other player that comes close to Fed's consistent power.
