Federer scored 15 aces against Roddick... ON CLAY

We know Roger has been practicing his serve, and it shows.

This guy is getting serious about his training, he isn't joking along anymore. He's working hard and it will pay off.

Federer is quiet and deadly now, you all better watch the F out!!!

roddick is the worst in the biz at returning roger's serve. i wonder what his statistics are in terms of 1st serves back into play, how many times aced etc. it always feels as if he gets owned worse than anyone. he himself said "roger somehow always seems to serve great against me." that...or...he sucks at returning.

Federer's problem is mental. He's scared of the other top 4 guys, so he goes for more on his first serve, ends up losing more points than winning. Against Roddick he's confident and keeps his first serve in the lines, which ultimately wins him more points and scores him more aces. I expect Federer'll be confident against Del Potro tomorrow, too, but he'll probably fold in the final to whomever he faces. That's 2009, baby.

Isn't he part of the top 4 ?

lol. With the way he has been playing lately, I guess some people forget.

No no no ice..don't be like everyone else, he hasn't been playing that bad lately...the only one outside the top 5 he's lost to was Stan and that was for a tournament he wasn't even planning on attending

Yeah I know, but the way he has been losing has been just kind of....sad. He still has second setitis and then just drifts away in the third. However, I liked what I saw today in the third set. He looked pissed and he just channeled all that anger and gave roddick a breadstick, so that was nice to see. Still need to work on the first serve%

theres actually stats for return winning percent, and roddick i believe is in the top 30 or 40 still so it isnt as bad as most ppl think.

You know this clay is nothing like R. Garros, Monte Carlo or even Rome, right?
I don't see many people complaining about the really fast, half-indoor conditions of this new clay court Masters Series. I guess the whining about surfaces is a one-way street on these boards.

I hope he approaches the rest of his matches with the same mentality he did against Roddick in the third set. And I hope that mentality lasts for the whole of the match. If it does, I think Fed can definitely turn the tables around against the other of the top 4, including Nadal (maybe not necessarily on clay though).

That's the only chance Fed has against Nadal is if he serves extremely well. The altitude and Nadal's topspin will be overwhelming for Fed.

He served at 56%, which is not gonna get it done against anyone of consequence. He's still got plenty of work to do.

So... if you are part of the top 4 and you are scared of the "other top 4 guys" what does that mean?

To me it means maybe the 4 other top players besides himself. That's just me with my crazy devil math.

Yea but Del Potro is number 5...meaning hes one of the the other 4...and given the AO and the 4-0 head to head i don't think Fed is scared of DP

I don't see why nadal's spin is such a problem.

personally i love playing against spin, when the ball bounces high it means i can smash it harder. If it goes any higher than my shoulder, it's a 90% winner from me.

I think you are thinking about moonballs that are hit pretty flat. Big difference when the ball has a lot of spin as well as more pace than your level.

true!

iirc, in the first set his 1st serve % was 33 or so (Rod was 88). That's awful.

Later it picked up in the 3rd set to what you quote. Too many first faults. A doubt fault to give Andy set point in the 2nd set (after an initial lead).

I like the pace and I use it towards my advantage.

Helps me hit the ball sooner so that I don't give my opponent enough time to center himself on the court.

Maybe I just got a different game, I'm not sure how this would work at high levels of play,

Everytime Federer plays against Roddick, he seems an invincible man.. Good first serve percentage even he aced Roddick a few time on second serve.. His backhand became weapon.. everything seems click.. then Nadal, Murray come along and Federer like difference guy.. missing left & right on his serve.. his backhand go down the toilet.. So how Federer will get his confidence back, play against Roddick more often.. He will be pumped up and ready for Nadal.. just think Nadal is Roddick and he'll be fine.. gosh.. it's killing me.. !!

So what do you not like? You like pace and change-ups (high balls). Hard to believe you're not on the tour. lol

I think that too.

If my family was rich enough to get me into an academy by age 8, i would humbly say that I would be in top 100 right now.

Maybe not, I will probably plateau after a while, but right now I improve noticeably after every hour I play.

It's true.

Just because you can smack it harder, doesn't mean it's a better shot, can you control and aim the shot? Just making flat bombs down the middle won't win you matches against good players.

Actually I naturally go cross court from right to left, and I can also go inside-out if I want to.

If the high-bounce is a cross court, I can smash it down the line, but that's an easy shot since I'm on the left side of my court.

that's cool.. but after you hit it.. nadal's gonna hit it with just the same pace if not more .. so you have to keep it up consistently .. VERY consistently to win

and i'm sure the pace you're hitting at is nothing to what the pros hit at
sure you may hit 80mph once in a while but that's considered an average rally shot for the pros
