Grip enhancers: Prince Grip Plus, Mighty Grip, Dry Hands

I have ridiculously sweaty/oily palms in the summer. I have to literally wash my hands, well, constantly in order to keep my grip, and to keep my overgrips from getting contaminated...

I first used Prince Grip Plus lotion. This is not bad. But the packaging sucks and the bottle is kind of hard to use... But, you have to apply it a lot in my case to keep my hands dry.

Then I got Mighty Grip for Tennis. This is a powder and a big disappointment. It's slightly tacky but it doesn't help my hands stay dry...at all. It still doesn't work as well as simply washing my hands.

I also tried Mueller Magic Grip... another disappointment. It's basically just Prince Grip Plus in a spray form. It drys your hands but it also calls them to have less grip (because of the powder film). I put an arseload of it on 10 minutes ago and my hands are sweaty again (just sitting here).

There's another product called Dry Hands.

Has anyone used this? It seems like a lotion that repels water. I'm pretty much willing to try anything at this point.

I use the Prince Grip Enhancer on the hottest, most humid days. Yeah, you have to reapply it on every changeover, and the bottle isn't very good. To get the last bit of it out, thin it out a bit with some rubbing alcohol.

I bought a tennis glove 2 years ago. I probably only use it 10 times or so during the summer, but it works much better than those other items you mentioned all of which I have tried.

Rosin Bag, Wristband, and Tourna Grip. Don't put anti-perspirant (which is what the grip enhancers are) on your palms. You inevitably touch your eyes at some point then you have it in your eye. Stick with basics.

Grip Enhancer

I, too, sweat a lot down here in Florida. The Prince Grip Enhancer works best for me, but I agree the bottle isn't designed too well and at $10 a pop it is pretty expensive.

I reapply at changeovers and it works pretty good. I also wondered if I couldn't get some type of gel deodorant that would work the same and only be 2 or 3 bucks. Anyone have any luck with this? I was at the store today and tried a couple different roll-ons and they didn't turn to the white powder by blowing them dry. They stayed a bit greasy and wet...no good.

Thanks.

Bring a towel with you when you play and dry your hands off on changeovers. Its not like you sweat so much you cant wipe it off on your shorts or something in between games.

Do you know us personally?

My shorts are soaked with sweat so wiping my hands off of them isnt a solution..... (especially if Im up against a pusher and the games are lasting forever....)

Wes...it is more complicated than that. I sweat so much that my shorts become soaked. Chalk it up to Florida heat and humidity.

Question for JavierLW

Javier...what have you found to work? I still think that the combo of wristbands, Prince Grip Enhancer, Tournagrip, and switching rackets as a last resort work pretty well.

I practiced today and when it is in the 90s with high humidity, everything gets really wet really quickly.

I would be interested to see what you do since you seem to sweat as much as I do.

The best situation Ive had:

1) Wilson Pro Soft Overgrip (orange seems to work the best for some reason)

2) Wristband (reduces sweat on the hands somewhat)

3) Towel (between games at first, during my service game when it gets really bad)

4) Multiple matched racquets used in the same match. If I let one grip dry, I can use a second racquet, and then switch back on the next change over. Ive played a few tournament matches this way. Wilson Pro Soft Overgrip seems to work well that way, other overgrips are pretty much finished once they get wet.

Ive also taken to bringing a spare overgrip with me and a small scissors in case I get to a 3rd set or something. There seems to be a HUGE difference if I start with a brand new overgrip versus even one that was used for one match.

When you think about it, when you buy them at TW, they come down to like $1 something a grip so it's not that big of a deal to use a new one if you need to.

I sympathize with your dilemma. Summer is my favorite time to play (because we have a winter here....), and sometimes it's been my worst time to play because I cant hold onto my racquet. The last year has been not as bad as previous years though since I started using this new overgrip.

I tryed the glove for awhile as well. I didnt have a tennis one, but I had racquetball gloves (I bet Id sweat a lot for that as well), golf, baseball.

I actually played great with the glove but when August rolled around which was what I thought it would really work in, it sucked, because the sweat would just soak the glove and then it was worse then not having a glove. I started to pack multiple ones, where Id bring 10 golf gloves (those felt the best but the ones I got were expensive) along to a match.

As soon as the season was over, I stopped using a glove. (I couldnt switch off of it during the season because it seemed to affect my timing and feel, it's like having a second overgrip on the racquet)

i use that as well.

not sure if it makes a difference, but it also seemed to help when i went from a syn grip to a leather grip. some of the syn grips seem too mushy and are hell to hold on to when you've got sweat pools forming around you.

I fully agree with you.

You know the skin is the largest organ, right? And what you put on your hands is going inside you almost as though you are drinking/eating/ingesting it. That antiperspirant stuff is just not right.

I play a lot. I sweat a lot in the summer, even in the winter. I use a towel when necessary. I wear a wristband. I use a fresh Wilson Pro Overgrip every couple of days. I rotate sticks.

No need for gimmicky BS.

Sawdust works, though. ANd it is basically free.

Is this hand/palm sweat or sweat running down your forearm?

Contaminated, really?
Do some yoga breathing so you reduce your level of stress.

There's a titanium-based product called Tite Grip or Tight Grip or something like that. They say golfers, baseball players and tennis players use it. I would not touch the stuff, but a guy I hit with likes it and he gets all OCD about putting it on before tennis.

Oh, have you tried the chalk you get when you go rock-climbing? That stuff is amazing. I guess a rosin bag would do the same, as lefty5 and The Shain mentioned earlier in this thread.

I agree with this 100%. I also saw Kusnetsova using this crap during her match at the US open. Ultimately it failed her because its just a temporary gimmic. Use a sweatband, rosin bags, and tourna grip and you will solve all your problems.

Looks interesting. The large bottle would be much more economical than the small sizes.

Gamma's Tacky Towel works okay. It instantly adds tack to any grip. But don't use too much---it's pretty sticky.

Someone beat me to it but that is a ridiculous assumption. I sweat more than anyone at my club--bar none. Even the super fat guys look at me after a long hot match and go, "did you just jump in the pool?" FWIW, I'm not one of them (super fat guys) as I'm 6 feet 169 pounds.

I have the same comment about the Prince enhancer--it works but has issues (i.e., its bottle, its cost, and its reapplication rate). I've tried all manner of other anti-sweat products but keep coming back to Prince because it is easy to find. Like others have said, you need to attack the problem from multiple angles. I use two huge Ivan Lendl-esque wristbands and change them after each set, a special headband, multiple towels, Tourna-Tac which I replace at least every week, and the Prince grip enhancer reapplied liberally.

*anything*

I'm pretty much willing to try anything at this point.

I've carried a huge tennis bag filled (mostly) with various agents to help me deal with the sweat issue. I'll now be able to go to a small sack as I've found *the* cure for sweaty grips - a golf "rain" glove.

This glove can be sopping wet, the grip can be sopping wet, and the grip doesn't slip at all. Several brands out there, but Rain-X is a simple, inexpensive version that has worked great, *and* it holds up much better than the (also inexpensive) leathery batting gloves that I had tried - in spite of feeling quite "flimsy".

Consider giving it a try. . .

If you have very sweaty hands you might, as I do, suffer from hyperhidrosis also called excessive sweating. I'll tell you that the only thing that works really well then, if you don't want to play with a glove, is botox injections to your palm. I tried that and my hand was completely dry for about three months. With my palm dry I used gorilla gold tacky towel combined with a tacky overgrip and it worked perfect.

At the moment though the botox effect have worned off and I try my best to maintain a grip with Prince grip plus and tourna grip but I am not completely satisfied with it and my game suffers a bit as a result.

I played really well today and believe I have found a combination that works pretty well even with my really sweaty palms. I switched between two racquets with fresh tourna grips on. About the tourna grips I have found that it's best to use the side that is not covered with the plastic wrap as it seems to have a rougher texture. Then whenever I felt the racquet started slipping a bit I applied some Prince grip plus, probably I did about then applications in an hour and a half. Also I wiped my hands regurarly with a towel.

The conclusion is that those grip enhancers actually works, so give it a try.
