Will TMF break Pete's record for weeks at #1?

TMF now stands at 248 weeks at #1 and counting. Pete's record is 286. Can he hold on for 38 more weeks? It looks like he will need to hold on to it until just after Roland Garros 2010...assuming I counted 38 weeks correctly. Is it inevitable, considering that he can still gain points at the end of this season and Nadal has a win at the AO to defend?

If he wins today, it seems pretty much inevitable. He'd then be guaranteed to have 2 GS wins in the rankings calculation until that time + Cincy Masters and a decent QF finish from MTL. He'd pretty much need either a major injury, catastrophic collapse at both the AO and FO, and/or probably the same person to win in Melbourne and RG (presumably Nadal is the only other player capable of this). Plus, Nadal would also in all likelihood need to dominate the clay season before RG to take #1 right after. This scenario is theoretically possible, but extremely unlikely at the current time.

I think he will, since he has demolished some of the other records, and is still going strong. The tweener against Djokovic proved it.

Yea that's only about 9 months. He is not HOWEVER, gonna break Sampras' 6 straight year end #1s.

237 consecutive weeks #1 > 6 straight YE #1's.

Eclipsing the total weeks #1 would be enough.

Winning USO, TMC and Basel would pretty much secure the #1 spot until Wimbey.

If he wins tonight, I think he will, tbh. He will at least make it to Madrid being no. 1 I think if he wins here, but after that, it'll be close maybe.

I agree. The 6 straight year end #1 is overrrated. All it said is Pete did it in the month of December. TMF did it 6 consecutive occasions in August(2004-2009). Both are equal since they both had to be the best in exactly 12 months.

Also, the 286 weeks at #1 >>>>>>>>>> 6 consecutive yrs #1.

Who the f#ck is TMF ?

If you've been paying attention to tennis in the last few years, then you would know. The great Federer has a few nicknames....

1. The Mighty Federer(TMF)
2. Darth Federer
3. Swiss Maestro
4. Fed Express

Now remember this by heart b/c I'm not going to repeat myself again.

Speaking of TMF, the first time I came across that nickname for Federer was one of Peter Bodo's columns on tennis.com. Does anyone know if he coined that phrase? I've just been curious for a while.

I think he will, especially if he wins today. He has a lot of points to gain in the fall, and he has points he can pick up at the AO, IW, Miami, MC and Rome. I don't think that he'll pick points up at all of those places, but I think he will do better in spots than he did earlier this year (one of his worst stretches ever). He's got an outside shot at 300 weeks, but he'll need to be completely dominant to do it.

Federer does not have a lot of points to defend at the masters cup final(if I am right he won only once which gives him 200 points of the possible 1500 total), I don't think Federer will lose in RR this time but we will see. Furthermore Nadal has to win the Australian open again not to mention all the master series tournaments he has to defend. I think pretty much the only way Federer will not make it is if he get's injured along the way. But still it would be really close because Nadal still would have to defend/gain a lot of points to pass him.

Can you think of any other player who has been #1 enough weeks that we'd even put them in the same breath with Sampras' record?

Actually, yes. There is another player who was #1 for 268 weeks. He also holds the record for matches won in the open era (1,222), tournaments won in the open era (109) and grand slam matches won in the open era (about 230). His name is Jimmy Connors.

Oh, I didn't realize he'd come out of retirement. Thanks for the update suegro.

It's pretty unlikely he'll break Sampras' record.

Obviously he won't break the consecutive record. But he may break the 6 total record. If he wins the USO, he's gauranteed the year end #1. That'll give him 5 total. He is obviously back on his game, so he should play well in 2010 and get another YE #1. That would be 6 and tie Pete, and break the total weeks in the process. He would just have to get another YE in 2011. He's sure to get to 300 weeks total as well.

7. Clay Feet?
8. Mono Lith?
9. Wilson 'Ho?
10. GROAN?

If Federer wins today, then it is almost assured. He only needs to keep #1 until the start of next year's Wimbledon not afterwards. This means that if he wins today, he will have at least 2 slam wins in the past year that entire time. His biggest competition, Nadal, will have 0 points for Wimbledon that entire time. Big advantage for Federer.

Whether he keeps #1 for much longer after Wimbledon next year is a different story, and depends on how things go from now. But winning today would pretty much guarantee breaking the record by a couple weeks.

I was just playing along. I could guess it, but I only know FedExpress and Fed, but have never heard og TMF before, so was just kidding around a bit.

My post was deleted anyway, even though I didn't say the F word.....

Your question was "Is there any other player who has been #1 enough weeks that we'd even put him in the same breath with Sampras?", not "Did Connors come out of retirement?"

So the answer is still yes, that Connors #3 stat of 268 is quite close to Sampras' #1 stat of 286. Lendl also is close at 270, although I expect Federer to surpass all of them next year.

That's not the only thing that's was overrated. Sampras was just about inferior to TMF in everything including but not limited to 1st serve, 2nd serve, and volleys.

Well, since we are talking about a player who might break the record, doesn't it seem like they would sorta need to be active on the ATP tour to do so? Isn't that kind of implied?

talk about a foolish statement that can't be taken out of context and misunderstood. Do you realize (probably don't) that the ATP race is over 52 week period??? NOT one month in December! You are a huge fool on this board (I got to read some of your nonsense). Also, no one in history has ended the year #1 for 6 straight years and that INCLUDES Roger Federer.

I also know you were a former banned poster. I will make sure to find out who you were.
