Did Serena deserve the fine and ban?

what huge fine? $85 isn't a huge fine, since her prize money from the US Open singles alone is twice that.
what ban? she's not banned from anything

Hell yes, she deserves it! She actually deserves some form of suspension from play as a punishment and not a suspended ban as a prevention from it happening again. What she did was inexcusable, regardless if it was blamed on passion for the game in the heat of the moment. Also, the financial fine is pocket change for her. The only person who will notice that is her accountant.

She derserved it, considering she made over $6,000,000 last year, 85k is just a drop in the bucket, for Serena that is not a huge fine at all, she is lucky she didn't get stripped of her singles winnings which were in an of themselves more than that. The warning of the ban, all for that to. Serena has an attitude that she is above such things as rules and regulations, well to use a phrase, she made her bed and now she has to lie in it.

Technically she was fined $175,000. Half of it will be waived if she doesn't commit another major offense at a grand slam in the next two years, and the onsite $10,000 fine she already was assessed went towards that, leaving an immediately due amount of half of $165,000 ($82,500).

Woodrow, am I right in thinking that this penalty is less than she would have had to pay if she had actually been defaulted from the match instead of assessed a point penalty on match point (because then she would have had to forfeit her entire singles purse)?

If she had actually been defaulted, she would have forfeited ALL prize money AND ALL ranking points that she accumulated at the US Open. In addition to all the prize money, she would have received an additional fine.
She may or may not have been defaulted from the doubles finals. That would be up to the referee staff.

Safina is #1 imo. Serena should of never gotten points for the tournament. She can thank the usta. Anywhere else and she is dq'd.
Sueing the usa's #1 female while working for the usta probably isnt the best idea.

The number of fbombs and her body language was kinda scarey. It wasnt just "ill kill you", that was mixed in during the violent rage. She was getting hotter and hotter, maybe could of exploded, never know.

it's a misdemeanor, so NY state attorney will not file charges.
filing charges is up to the lineswoman.
why she hasn't filed is something we don't know.
it might be that she signed something when getting employeed to not sue players, or she got a settlement, or she just didn't want to be in the mess anymore.
i'm mainly just pointing out what Serena did can be charged as an offense and is different from just a simple outburst or yelling or berating of the officials.

Decorum on a tennis court, so hallowed and pristine, while they show clips of Nastasie hiding under the tarp vs. John McEnroe, like it's the greatest thing that ever happened. You got Nadal picking his ass left and right, hopping around like it's a boxing match @ Wimbledon...he's a terrible sportsman, if you ask me.
The double standard is staggering. Henin flat out lied and cheated on Serena at RG a few yrs back--she obviously asked for time and lied.
They did not flog her or put her through a prolonged public courtship with execution.
And Serena handled that episode with class, as she did the one with maria conchita gonzalez martinez sanchez or whatever that hack's name is...another liar.
Serena has always been villified unfairly, like a John Gotti...JK...slow white people have always been jealous of her skills and how truthful she is ("I lost b/c I didn't play well"). I hope she pays that 82-5 Randy Moss style...

Wrong. Menacing 2 requires 1 of 3 parts. 1) using a weapon, no. 2) repeats the act over a period of time, no. 3) violates a protection order, no. Menacing 3 requires the belief of imminent harm or death. Does anyone really think, lineswoman included, that Serena would kill or injure her on the Center Court of the US Open in front of many millions of viewers. Absolutely not. The law is a matter of intent. Don't make mountains of molehills. I spend 5 days a week in NYC, you haven't seen anything. In a city of 8.5 million people, maybe the cops have some really crimes to deal with. I don't know where you're from, but we don't have butlers to dry our tears with silk hankies when someone offends us. Ya know what we do. We tell the person to "F*** off", flip 'em the bird, and go on our way.

once you start to threat imminent harm to someone, it's crossed the line.

Not fair to Serena...? How fair would it be to Clijsters if it was not called, and it is not uncommon for Serena to be called for a foot fault... If you want to line up right up against the edge of the line you take your chances.

the act is a misdemeanor, whether there were charges or not is another matter. like you said, they probably have bigger fish to fry and didn't bother, but that doesn't mean she didn't do any wrong.
it's like if you shoplifted and got caught, but the store employee didn't call the cops or press charges. You still committed a crime, regardless if you got charged or not.

She shoudve lost all the points she won in the tournament in which the incident happened, and forbid her to continue playing doubles. The fine and ban she got are completely ridiculous.

Yeah, I thought she was lucky they didn't take points; subtracting 1000points would get some players' attention.
