Do you think Serena Williams deserved that huge fine and ban from the U.S. Open?
what huge fine? $85 isn't a huge fine, since her prize money from the US Open singles alone is twice that.
what ban? she's not banned from anything
She deserved it. You might like her displacement of frustration hinting at her seriousness to win, but emotions are part of the game too. And she lost control, she's fortunate they did not take points away.
er..you call that emotions?
This week in washington state a black guy entered a coffee shop and killed four police officers. Such a emotional guy.
He just hated cops.
Technically she was fined $175,000. Half of it will be waived if she doesn't commit another major offense at a grand slam in the next two years, and the onsite $10,000 fine she already was assessed went towards that, leaving an immediately due amount of half of $165,000 ($82,500).
If she had actually been defaulted, she would have forfeited ALL prize money AND ALL ranking points that she accumulated at the US Open. In addition to all the prize money, she would have received an additional fine.Woodrow, am I right in thinking that this penalty is less than she would have had to pay if she had actually been defaulted from the match instead of assessed a point penalty on match point (because then she would have had to forfeit her entire singles purse)?
She should have been arrested and charged.
Charged with what? Yelling at someone. Welcome to New York. Sorry, I forgot that people aren't allowed to do that. Wait, let me guess what you're gonna say. "She said she was gonna shove the ball down her throat!". Big friggin deal. OOHHHH!! NOT THAT!!! Someone's feelings got hurt, boo hoo.

@ HellBunni, if the lineswoman did not feel it was necessary to press charges/sue Serena, and the NY State Attorney did not even look at the case, who are you to beg for criminal charges?
Yes, because yelling at a lineswoman is the same as murder.

charged with 2nd or 3rd degree menacing.
Class A carries a possible sentence of up to 1 year. Class B carries a possible sentence of up to 6 months.

this is ny state law
what she did was not yell, she made a threat.
huge difference.
Wrong. Menacing 2 requires 1 of 3 parts. 1) using a weapon, no. 2) repeats the act over a period of time, no. 3) violates a protection order, no. Menacing 3 requires the belief of imminent harm or death. Does anyone really think, lineswoman included, that Serena would kill or injure her on the Center Court of the US Open in front of many millions of viewers. Absolutely not. The law is a matter of intent. Don't make mountains of molehills. I spend 5 days a week in NYC, you haven't seen anything. In a city of 8.5 million people, maybe the cops have some really crimes to deal with. I don't know where you're from, but we don't have butlers to dry our tears with silk hankies when someone offends us. Ya know what we do. We tell the person to "F*** off", flip 'em the bird, and go on our way.
lol. Everybody on here wants Serena's blood 'cause she yelled at a linesperson and "threatened" to kill her and to shove balls down her throat. So what!! Hypocrites always want to act like they would not have done the same thing in the heat of the moment. We all know that had this been Hingis or Sharapova this incident would've been written off as blowing off steam. The commentators would've said their usual "oh, she's just being fiesty" and we would've moved the F on but this is Serena, She's muscular, she black, she's a threat, let's get her!!
Safina is #1 imo. Serena should of never gotten points for the tournament. She can thank the usta. Anywhere else and she is dq'd.
I like you, Andy. In case nobody else has, let me yell "RACISM!!!!!" Decorum on a tennis court, so hallowed and pristine, while they show clips of Nastasie hiding under the tarp vs. John McEnroe, like it's the greatest thing that ever happened. You got Nadal picking his ass left and right, hopping around like it's a boxing match @ Wimbledon...he's a terrible sportsman, if you ask me.
The double standard is staggering. Henin flat out lied and cheated on Serena at RG a few yrs back--she obviously asked for time and lied.
They did not flog her or put her through a prolonged public courtship with execution.
And Serena handled that episode with class, as she did the one with maria conchita gonzalez martinez sanchez or whatever that hack's name is...another liar.
Serena has always been villified unfairly, like a John Gotti...JK...slow white people have always been jealous of her skills and how truthful she is ("I lost b/c I didn't play well"). I hope she pays that 82-5 Randy Moss style...
STRAIGHT CASH! And then I hope she wins the AO, singles and doubles, and then eats the biggest flipping bucket of popeye's she could get her hands on.
BTW, anybody calling foot faults at that juncture of a match that important, in successive games...let me say it again...RACISM. The call is made once a month, but 2x vs. Lady S in 5 minutes?

Are you serious?! I mean really, were you trying to be serious at all, when you wrote this?
You are calling the lineswoman racist because she called a foot fault during an important point of the match? Again I'm asking you are you serious?
menacing 2:
1.) the way she was using the racket can be viewed as a weapon
2.) she repeated and was about to apporach her again to threaten her more when the chair called for the lineswoman
menacing 3:
1.) a life threat => threat of imminent harm
f** off and flip 'em the bird IS NOT THE SAME as threat.
this is on national TV with tons of evidence. Not a he said, she said scenario.
this isn't about someone being offended, offending someone falls under harassment.
Do you honestly think a judge would believe that Serena Williams, grand slam champion, uber rich, in front of millions of viewers, is going to attack the lineswoman with her racket? She didn't even swing it at her. Thank goodness our court system is full of more reasonable people than you.
Did you really think, Serena Williams, grand slam champ, filthy rich, in front of thousands of live viewers, and millions of tv viewers was going to threaten a lineswoman with physical violence?
Bet you didn't. But it did happen.
Do you think Serena Williams deserved that huge fine and ban from the U.S. Open?
Yea that doesn't surprise me at all, but acting on it, that's completely different.
thinks occurred because she let things go to her head and reason out the window.
when someone acts like that, anything is possible.
when reasonable ppl lose their reason, they let their Id take over and that's when crimes are committed.
from her words, body language, and actions, she had intent to do harm and she showed it.

You can keep telling yourself that she is a criminal, but no prosecutors in NY think that she is.

She shoudve lost all the points she won in the tournament in which the incident happened, and forbid her to continue playing doubles. The fine and ban she got are completely ridiculous.
