IMO Rafa's level of tennis was good enough to win Wimbledon. He should have been able to find a way to win the final, especially since he had a great serving day. Of course, there are some technical and tactical things that he can certainly improve. If he can play well against everyone, why can't he do the same against Djoko?

It's all MENTAL, and unless Rafa figures it out, it's going to be the same banana the next time they meet. Rafa has said as much in his presser.

Their match-up is always going to be about who plays the big points better, and especially in their last three matches, Rafa has been the one to blink first during the tail end of sets/matches. Against everyone else, Rafa is the one who wins the important points, and against Djoko, he seems to be afraid to lose the point, instead of trying to win the point. Rafa has got to take it to him the next time they meet.

I hope he was mightily pissed at the way he played in this final, possibly his worst performance in a grand slam final considering that he's a two-time champion and he was playing a first-time finalist. But Nadal will surely learn from this---he has always been a student of the game. He knows what he has to do, but he needs to have right mindset in order to execute it. One can only hope that the next time they meet, he will be up to the task.

This is the best post on the subject in this thread.

First of all, it is silly to assume that anyone, not just Nadal, will never have a blip on their career just because they've won a lot. People get their expectations up so high, it's ridiculous. Everyone knows what Nadal should do. Yeah, right. He just needs to play each point like he did in the past without looking ahead.

Right now Rafa is in a slump regarding Djoker, for whatever reason, for all we know it may not even be tennis related.

He didn't play the last matches against Djokovic at a very high level, and this is what happens. But it'll pass.

And if you're watching, Djokovic isn't playing at the high level he started out the year with either. Some people are being blinded by the wins. If Novak all out dominates I will eat my hat. I simply don't see it in the cards.

Well there we are. After tennis we may well see more of Rafa because the guy who won the latest golf tournamant here- Darren Clarke- was 44. Rafa you could take the world on in golf after you have finished with tennis. If he gives the same dedication to professional golf as he has to tennis then wow !!

Darren Clarke was born on the 14th August 1968, so he's 42.

Its amazing that anyone could think Nadal's issues against Djoker are mental. Its so obvious that it is just a terrible matchup, Rafa just doesn't have a game that can beat Djoker 2.0. It won't matter how many fist pumps or vamoses he does.

Nadal himself has said that, I don't know why his fans can't accept this. He will have to work hard and retool his game, go against his natural defensive tendencies and standing 15ft back. Unfortunately those changes are also going to hurt his chances at the Fo going forward, if he decides to make them.

BS. It's clear as day that a lot of Nadal's problems right now with Djokovic are mental. How else to you explain the constant choking away of service games that he needs to hold onto to either stay in a set or a match? Rafa had him on the ropes in the first set and a half in IW this year,and had he not choked he would have won that title. It is clear that since Nadal has declined so much he is not the same beast he used to be mentally. Burnout has sent players to early retirement(Borg),or has just left them vulnerable to players they used to have at least a chance at beating. Burnout is a big problem for Rafa right now,and it shows big time.

I feel sad for you that you're so blind that you're missing the wonderful tennis that is played by Rafa. Doesn't say much for all the other tennis players he regularly beats since he wins with his apparently crappy game.

Of course. He won only 4 slams on the fast surfaces. Incidentally it is one slam more than Djokovic's total number of them.

Clay-court Rafa also had a misfortune of winning 5 Masters on hard surfaces. Hard-court expert Djokovic won exactly the same number of them.

Rafa will definitely be in trouble against Federer (H2H 18-8), Djokovic (H2H 16-12), Murray (H2H 12-4), Del Potro (H2H 6-3), Soderling (H2H 6-2), Berdych (H2H 10-3). Have I missed somebody?

What's amazing is that some people (like you) are so in denial about the quality of Rafa's game.

Of course his issues with Nocak are in big part mental (and he himself has said this), and as other said, that's clear from his choking in important points in the last few games between them. That's not to say that it's only mental, BTW. But he clearly has the game to beat Djokovic.

Rafa can't reasonably be called a clay court specialist since at the very least 2008. You just don't want to admit it...

So, it appears Rafa's ankle/heel isn't exactly 100%. He has it taped up for a game of beach soccer. Hope it's not going to be a problem for him in the upcoming hard court swing.
