Murray enters Basel?

I think someone's whispered in his ear that he could still finish the year as #2, I had a feeling he'd do this actually.

I think it's more likely he's out to try and confirm the #3 ranking by widening the gap with Federer as much as possible by year end. He can only gain points in Basel whereas Federer is only defending (and Djokovic mostly too).

I think that's a great move on Murray's part. He's currently riding on a wave of confidence and has only to gain by entering Basel.

It's also a very bold "Hey, I'm here to possibly spoil the party, problem?" message to Fed and Novak. I think he likes his chances of playing a rusty Novak or Fed at semis/final.

One of the best moves I seen from Murray. Now hopefully Nadal will announce that he's entering aswell so we got the the top 4 playing. :)

It would be absolutely hilarious if the top 4 entered here, and then burned themselves out with really tough semis and finals and then crashed and burned at the WTF.

It would be terrible for the game, but still really funny.

Well, right now Murray is the hottest player on hardcourt, and maybe he is trying to get a matchup with Fed or Djokovic to prove that. I highly doubt Murray is going for the #2 ranking, because all Nadal needs is to win 1 match at Paris. he has a good shot because he will be seeded #2 and may only have to play Fed/Djok on the finals.

The key question is who Fed faces in the SF? Murray or Djoko..

Don't get me wrong, but I think Murray could win this tournament. He's probably the only other players on the tour, who has a genuine shot of beating Djoko, especially in a non-slam setting..

I doubt Murray wins this. Cvac has it all but wrapped up already.

Murray is going to have a much harder road to win the atp 500 tournament than shanghai... Novak and Fed will both make the semis for sure...

Murray will pwn match rusty Fed and match rusty Djokovic and starve the ball kids of a pizza party by enjoying pizza instead with his hot girlfriend and (mum/mom)

Advantage - Murray.

Federer will be the #3 seed, so if Fed end up in Novak's half, Murray will have a walk to the final. The field in basel lacks depth.

That might have been correct before Murray entered Basel. If Murray wins he'll be 1800 points behind Rafa in the race going into Paris. If Rafa was to win one match at Paris and Murray won the event, Murray would be 980 points behind going into WTF.

I'm not saying for a minute it will happen though.

You think Murray will beat Nadal at Roland Garros and Wimbledon? I bet he won't.

I bet he can. Especially at Wimbledon. And beating Nadal has become a whole lot easier to do on clay(everywhere actually),and I think Andy can definitely do it.

Murray absolutely will get to number 2 next year. Probably by the end of IW/Miami he will be ranked #2 if not sooner.

agree on the last part since hes barley defending any points there where Nadal has 2 finals. I also think Murray will get at least to the finals of AO

If Murray could beat Nadal at the FO or Wimbledon, he'd surpass him months ago.

Luckily for him 65 % of the season is played on hard courts. If Murray does better than Nadal in Paris and WTF this year, he will come very close. Nadal on the other hand is defending tons of points starting from Indian Wells up till Wimbledon.

Imagine the points Murray can pick up in the spring hardcourt season (California/Miami). 2012 could be a huge year for him. He has to improve at Wimbledon though. He needs to become exceptionally aggressive if he's going to make waves. He needs to play there like he played in the final set of Tokyo a few weeks back. Go for winners instead of playing cat and mouse.

Murray will get to no 2 in the world, if not this year, at some point in 2012, I'd bet on it.

I don't think the ranking matters for Nadal per se, and he will most likely fall to #3 next yr or below.

The main thing for Nadal is slams, and he would have a shot at them as long as he's in top 4 (which I think he will be for the next yr at the minimum). Nadal needs to try to get at least 1 slam, somehow, so that he can match Borg's total before all is said and done.

If he goes slamless in 2012, the window of opportunity might be closed forever given his physical style because of which a decline in speed has a disproportionate effect on the rest of his game..

I'm not so sure about that. If he falls in Cvac's half of the draw he won't even be able to make the final. He could be out by the quarters or the semis. His chances at winning slams are over anyway, but falling in Cvac's half of the draw makes any chance at all of even making the final impossible. Besides, even if he made the final he would not beat Cvac anyway.

True. But there might be a case (however unlikely) in which someone else takes out Djoko. Or at least Nadal has to hope for that, and try to keep his level w.r.t the rest of the field.

This is similar to what Fed did in 2009, when although he was beaten by Nadal in 3 of the last 4 slams, he made most of the chance when Nadal lost to someone else.

Not gonna happen. Plus, since Nadal is so injury prone,Fed was able to go on his tear in 2009. Cvac is not injury prone like Nadal, and will not miss slams and significant time the way Nadal has. He really is SOL no matter what. Now with Murray,Delpo,etc.. in the mix(especially Murray),he really hasn't got a shot in h*ll of winning anymore slams.

Rafa will probaby finish no. 2 this year, but he needs to do better at the AO if he wants to hold onto it in 2012.

:???: Why are you so quick / eager to write him off?

Have you been watching him this year? He has declined terribly and he has lost a step. Not to mention mentally he is not nearly as tough as he once was. And with Murray,Delpo, etc finally starting to find their game he will be lucky to even make another slam final, and even if he did he will not beat Cvac. Another point is when his ranking drops early next year he could fall in Cvac's half of the draw. Do you honestly see him making it past him in any tournament whatsoever? Nadal will not win any more slams. It would be a miracle if he did.

Nadal won't win another slam? You've got to be joking. I hope you post here when you're proved wrong. If not, I'll take a lot of pleasure in posting an "I told you so."

Go ahead. You're going to have a very long wait if that time ever comes at all.

LOL Nadal 4-1 vs Murray this year, even beat him at the US Open of all places :D you are funny.

Nadal can gain HUGE points thanks to the Australian Open QF. His injury vs Ferrer may have cost him the top ranking but it worked out nicely for 2012. Only defending 360 points at the AO!

I guess you missed where Andy beat Nadal senseless at Tokyo this year, beating him 6-0 in the 3rd set. Andy is only getting better while Nadal is only getting worse. It's only a matter of time before Murray reverses his h2h against Nadal.

No surprise there, if Doidog can beat Nadal, then Murray should able to, and Fish of course. We already knew this :D

I personally was much more impressed with Murray's 2010 AO defeat of Nadal.

And Murray can get even more points at IW/Miami where he defends 20 to Rafa's 1200.
