Always looking for the bad things is also what a hater does. That Nadal second on your black list (just after Serena Williams) is no secret. You often put them in the same basket anyway.

You don't know me at all. I would never call someone a monkey(only a hater would do). However I will voice my displeasure on a player's action. eg Serena's verbally/physically attack the asian lady, or Nadal wasting time between point to get an unfair advantage.

Anything that ruin the sport bugs me the most.

I liked that article too. Seems like Rafa is being written off a lot, so it's nice to see something positive.

Yes its is :).

Oh, thanks very much :).

Not for long.

And who cares how many slam finals he made? He didn't win them, wasn't even close to winning them, and really didn't deserve to even make it that far. He wasted every opportunity he had in every single one of those finals last year. I'll be shocked if he even makes it past the 4th round at the AO with the way he's playing.

Until he can start putting up a fight and actually winning something he can be put back into the mix. The thing is he seems to be more worried about hawking Kia,Quely crackers,Barcardi, playing meaningle$$ exo$,complaining constantly, and posing in his underwear so I doubt that happens anytime soon. His tennis has become nothing more than a front for making even more money than he already has. It's become secondary to him,and he seems to not give a sh*t about it anymore.

You seem really mad at Rafa.

Amazing. One of only seven men to win the career grand slam in the open era, one of only three to do it in the modern era, and one of only two to win the golden slam, has the second best career winning percentage in the history of the ATP, holds numerous other records, and yet you and others find Rafa 'disappointing' and 'frail'. No tennis player has ever accomplished so much and been so maligned.

Does he?, behind whom, Borg?.

Yet he drives a half a million dollar Aston Martin, has a multi-million dollar house in the Dominican Republic, and wears a half a million dollar watch. He's not living like a pauper so stop acting as if he does.

So, he bought a luxury car. Big deal really... it's not like he has ten of those in his garage.
The watch is a sponsorship deal, not really different than wearing Nike outfits, would you criticize him for that?. And where do you the info that he has a house in the Dominican Republic?, haven't heard about that.

I see this expressed all over the place. What exhibitions did Rafa play last year and how many is too many? He played Abu Dhabi. So did five others. A dozen or so played Kooyong in Australia. Why is Rafa singled out? The one he and Djokovic played in Colombia was probably ill advised, I'll grant you that. Then Rafa and Ferrer played an exo in Taiwan on their way to Japan/China - no big deal, they were going to Asia anyway and it was a glorified hour of practice which was great for tennis. Rafa is and has been one of the best ambassadors for tennis ever and should be lauded for that, not derided. What other exhibitions did he play and why is he getting so much grief for supposedly playing so many?

Your point about Rafa and Novak being exhausted at the end of the year is a good one and I think even more important than being physically drained, both of them were totally mentally done in. The intensity of the big matches they both played throughout the year was immense and there are only so many times these guys can get themselves 'up' for peak performance levels. I think the mental aspect of elite competition is often overlooked.

Good post Vernon, I agree with you.

Both things are really different. And sorry, but taking out of proportion like that the fact that Rafa takes some more seconds to serve seems a little hater-like to me.

But don't you get 90% of your prediction wrong? That's what people have said. So your post is a good sign for me.

 Did you just pull the 90% stuff out of thin air? I still stand by my opinion that Nadal is done, and he will not win anymore slams. Based on his play and non-stop whining I don't see how you or anyone else could come to any other conclusion.

He's made 6 of the last 7 slam finals, and he's defending RG champion. On top of that, he's been injured at the AO the last 2 years. Before that, he won the AO. It's an awfully big call to say he won't win slams this year. It's basically putting all your eggs in the Djokovic basket. You are basing everything on 2011, right? That would mean Federer and Murray can't beat Nadal in a slam in 2012. If you looked at 2012 you would see Nadal is hitting the ball deeper than ever. So base your prediction on 2011, or 2012, either way Nadal is in a great position.

This. He's not playing as well as he used to, but it's crazy to say he's never gonna win another slam.

Well,Fed won the AO is 2010 and how many slam finals has he made since then? The point I am making is that last year is last year, and Nadal was a disappointment from start to finish. I don't think he has anything left, and now with his constant whining, complaining, sponsors, and exo$ I have very little faith left in him at all.

I would love to know just where you are getting your optimism from. Based on what I saw of him in Abu Dhabi and Doha, nothing has changed and he is still a mess.

You shouldn't be so concerned about Nadal. He will win more slams than anyone this year, don't worry.

Optimism? Im not being optimistic, I feel like im telling how it is and you're being pessimistic. He's #2 in the world and makes slam finals like they're nothing. He's gonna end up winning a major this year.

Is it because Nadal is going to match Federer-Sampras-Borg's record of 8 straight years winning slams? Is that why you are so dead against Nadal winning?

No,it's because he ain't winning anything with the way he has been playing. Do you think he has played well? How about last year when he served worse than a junior, and made Verdasco look like a mental giant compared to himself? Just what is it you find positive about Nadal's game or mentality right now?

Where? And did Cvac cease to exist while I wasn't looking? How about Murray and Fed? Are they still on earth or were they beamed up as well?

Come on now. When did Federer last reach a final? Murray? As crappy as Nadal's playing at least he's actually giving himself the opportunity to be there on the last day and win. If Djokovic has one bad day, Nadal is instantly the 2nd favorite for the title.

You probably thought Nadal wouldn't be in the US Open final, because he failed so miserably at Cincy

Nadal is a SLAM player. That is his identity.

Fed was in the RG final just last year, and is on a 20(iirc)match win streak. Murray just won a title playing fantastic tennis to do so,and now has a new coach that will most likely make him even better. Cvac needs no introductions. And then there's Nadal, who hasn't won a title since RG last year, hasn't won a hc title in a year and half, and was horrible throughout the end of the year last year, playing some of the worst tennis I have ever seen from him. How do you figure he is the second favorite for anything at this point? I just do not see it.

Well the tournament is underway, lets see who's racquets start talking. Not saying Nadal will win or even come close, but he's not done winning slams on the whole.

How about the way he came back in the DC match against del Potro, despite the fact that Delpo was blowing him off the court at that point and the pressure he must have been under?.

And he didn't make Verdasco look like a mental giant. Verdasco looked even worse than Nadal did in that match.

I was talking about as a whole. Nadal was a mental midget last year, not just in their match in Cinci.

Delpo wasn't blowing Nadal off the court in that DC match. He wasn't even serving that well, and was making errors. Of course he had something to do with Nadal's struggles, but the truth is Nadal played horribly to start that match, and then it was the all too familiar Nadal roller coaster throughout the rest of it. He is inconsistent in his matches anymore, and his focus and intensity are both up and down. I can almost guarantee you he will come out in his match today and struggle with a dude who is ranked something like 163 in the world. He's become so predictable you can set your clock by him.

Does he?, behind whom, Borg?.
Yes, behind Borg. Before last year Rafa was virtually tied with Borg but his stats took a bit of a hit in the last half of last year. After 2011, the top ten are:

1. Bjorn Borg .827 608-127
2. Rafael Nadal .823 544-117
3. Jimmy Connors .818 1242-277
4. Ivan Lendl .818 1071-239
5. John McEnroe .815 875-198
6. Roger Federer .813 810-186
7. Rod Laver .795 412-106
8. Novak Djokovic .780 394-111
9. Pete Sampras .774 762-222
10. Boris Becker .769 713-214

Ever heard of investment properties Clarky? Rafa also owns a resort in Cancun, Mexico. He's never been to either of them. (They both look spectacular from the pictures I've seen of them though.) Rafa has many millions of dollars that have to be put to work somewhere and his dad is a very astute real estate investor. It's what he made his own money on.

Well, I saw him at Doha, he lost to Monfils (Nadal made some unforced errors at crucial times in games, mostly due to his racquet change most likely), but in his matches he hit winners with more regularity than any week of tennis since 2010 US Open. So that is the ultimate sign that, perhaps due to the racquet change (or maybe just the new emphasis on attacking for 2012) he is confident enough to hit through the court (and he didn't even do that at the US Open and still made the final). Nadal's worst level these days is still good enough for a slam final, don't forget. Nadal is not at his worst level at all, and his shots so far in 2012 have more range than I've seen since 2010. And that is why everything is in place for Nadal to have his best year ever.

There were so many Nadal fans that used to post regularly on this thread. Babette, NadalBestClass, Bud, bolo, TheTruth, TennisAndMusic, Fedace, Bullzilla...They all seem to have gone.

Credit to those that are still keeping this thread going like veronbc, Crissti, Mustard and MichaelNadal. :)

Oh and of course, old time Nadal fan aphex also. ;)

I still come occasionally, but mostly only to this thread which is a bear to get into, but I've been extremely busy and (sick) and my schedule isn't getting any better. I don't miss it much though, because there's a lot of negativity here, even where none should exist.

When you get away from it, there isn't much interest in coming back often. But, I can't resist the pictures and articles posted here, so it's worth a good look see every now and then.

I think many of them are very young Crisstti, and haven't quite figured out yet how to get on in civilized society. For those that aren't actually young in years, they're very young in maturity and they behave as if they're back in middle school and they're trying to act big and tough out on the playground at recess.

I agree. I have no problem getting to the last page either and it does keep some of the riff-raff out. Unfortunately, there aren't many Rafa fans left on this forum period. It's a hostile place most of the time and it's unfortunate the mods don't seem to care about all the flaming and baiting and bashing, not just of Rafa but of any poster who tries to post positively. I don't even bother going 'out there' most of the time but do pop in here to see if anything's going on. :)

Same here. I have no interest in the outer threads. But as long as there's this thread, when I have time I always check in to read your posts. You always post news I can't get anywhere else.

Start of Transcribed Interview

Q. Could you give us a little sense of how the courts are playing here this year. Are they a little slower than last year, perhaps?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. I don't have this feeling, especially when probably the practice week, the week before, yes. But for the weather conditions, the weather was, you know, cold, humid, was cloudy all day. That makes the ball slower, and that's makes the ball much bigger.

Today start the good weather. Good hot over there, and the ball went faster from the racquet. The weather makes a lot of changes on the conditions especially on the ball.

Q. Was it perhaps because of the weather that you felt you needed a bit more strapping on your leg, extra protection?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, that's not the reason, no? I gonna do because I think, you know, doing this band there, I don't want to create mystery or nothing. I gonna say what happened.

I had a fantastic week of practice with nothing of pain, no one bad feeling on the knee and no one place on my body. So I was really, really happy with everything.

But yesterday afternoon happened the more strange thing ever happen to me. I was sitting on a chair in the hotel. I felt like a crack on the knee, but is nothing really strange. Happens lot of time with articulation, movement, articulation. Nothing strange.

I stand up. I felt the knee a little bit strange. I moved the leg like this two times to try to find the feeling. After the second time, the knee stays with an unbelievable pain completely straight. I really couldn't move the knee like this (indicating just a little bit). I have no movement on the knee.

I have a hard afternoon. I did all the tests. Came here for ultrasound. Went to hospital for MRI. I just can say thank you very much to the tournament for all the facilities give to me on a Sunday. Not easy to find places, and they make fantastic work for me. So I just can say thanks to them.

And, seriously, yesterday during the evening I wasn't hundred percent sure I would have chance to play, because with the movement of that knee I felt that I will not be able to play.

I did a lot of treatment. The MRI was positive. Nothing wrong shows the MRI. So that's always a lot of calm. But still the knee, you know, with the pain.

Finally what happened is with the movement, articulation, probably pinch maybe the tendon little bit or something that put the tendon completely straight.

That's why yesterday we did a lot of work during the evening. At the end of the night with a lot of pain, but I finally really had the full movement of the knee. I wake up today morning with a little bit better feeling. I did all the treatment. I was all the day doing the treatment.

I started the match with a little bit of scare at the beginning, and nervous because I was really disappointed yesterday. But, you know, after the first 10 games that was scare, I started to play with normal conditions.

The best thing is I felt the knee very well. So is something that I really don't understand why happened everything, but I am really happy that today I was ready to play and I played a fantastic match.

Q. What sort of treatment did you get on your knee?

RAFAEL NADAL: Is really strange, because you can have feeling like this, because you have bad movement, aggressive movement playing. Nothing like that happened. So I did a lot of physiotherapy with my physio trying to relax everything. Antiinflammatories, a lot. Local antiinflammatories. Everything. Tried to, you know, take the pain out.

Q. As usual, hard courts are a very punishing surface to play tennis.

RAFAEL NADAL: But that wasn't the case.

Q. I'm just saying, to play seven matches potentially on a hard court in two weeks is asking a lot, or that should be okay as long as you feel the way you feel?

RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry, but I have good hopes. You can have an injury playing an aggressive movement. But sitting on a chair, you cannot have injury. So that's why I really keep not understand what's going on.

But I understand when the knee comes back to the right place, you know, and we are able to relax that. So I was much more scared about the first match than the rest, because today now I have 48 hours to the next match.

So I am really confident that having the worst feeling that I ever had in my knee yesterday and today was able to play. I have fantastic hope that gonna happen the same for after tomorrow.

Q. Have you had a chance to speak to Roger, following your comments yesterday, regarding the problems on the tour?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. But, anyway, probably yesterday what I said I said. Probably I am wrong telling that to you, especially because these things can stay, must stay in the locker room.

I always had fantastic relationship with Roger. I still have fantastic relationship with Roger. That's what should be, in my opinion. Don't create crazy histories about what I said yesterday, please.

Just I said, because, you know, we can have different views about how the tour need to work. That's all.

Q. Did the top four players get together on Sunday after the players' meeting on Saturday?

RAFAEL NADAL: No.

Q. Do you plan to speak to Roger soon to try to explain what you meant yesterday, maybe to apologize?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. You know, what I said I said. I feel sorry for say that, especially to you. Because when I say that, I have to say him personally. But that's it. Forget.

I do not talk anymore. During the two weeks, you can try very hard to asking me a lot of things. Yesterday, you know, I started, and I say I don't want to talk anymore about this. Finally I talked to much as usual. That's not gonna happen again.

I advise all of you. You can try hard, but I gonna talk about tennis. If I am here two weeks, if I am here two days, I gonna have less work.

THE MODERATOR: Any more questions?

RAFAEL NADAL: After that... You are only interested in that, not the tennis (smiling).

I would say it sounds like a cramp, but the knee is all bone. At least it had no impact on his tennis. If it happened again say just before a match begins or during a match, I wonder what he would do, because he knows it can go away. He might just play the match (even though he wouldn't be able to move) and hope that his opponent takes a while to deliver the 6-0 6-0 and hope that his knee unlocks in time to play the 3rd set properly :)

That Knee issue for Nadal is definitely worrisome. And not in a good way as it might have future implications.

Hopefully he can continue on without problems and play at 100% at least for this event. I would hate to see him have issue again, in the light of what happened in 2010 and 2011..

How can it be that he has problems in this tournament SO, SO often?. Doesn't seem normal :?.

Glad he felt fine though. It's great this didn't happen during a match or right before.

Lol, hilarious :D

He sure is :)

I was thinking this as soon as I heard about the knee. Hopefully it's a non-issue and he makes it out of the AO without an injury or an MTO.

It's like there are evil spirits in Australia. But at least it wasn't directly caused by a tennis movement during a match/training. And tests revealed no problem. That is promising in a way. May have just been a fluke one-off thing that will never be repeated.

Mmm, no, the list was of career winning percentages. It had Borg first, then Fed, then Rafa.
Hmm, that other poster must have been a Fed fan. :p The list I posted is the most current numbers from the ATP site. I'm a bit of a stats nut so I keep pretty close track of various numbers and these are correct. Fed hasn't been second to Borg in quite a number of years, if ever.

Rafa is way too nice. I don't see Roger saying he shouldn't have said what he said in public... but well, that's why we like him. I'm glad though he said he wasn't going to apologize and didn't backtrack on what he said either, and that after all things seem to be fine enough between them, as I agree that's the way it should be.
I agree that Rafa is way too nice sometimes. He is just innately such a kind and gentle person - a lovely man. It annoys me to no end when the hater brigade goes on about him being fake but for those of us who have read many many interviews with him and articles about him and comments about him from those who know him personally, he has been a gentle soul all his life. It's funny because on the tennis court he is so intense and focused but one of the things that most regular people don't know about Rafa is that he is such a happy person. Those who know him best like family and old friends use that adjective to describe him most often, and that inner happiness is a major reason he is as nice as he is. You see it come out a bit on the tennis court when he's playing doubles with Marc and they have so much fun and giggles together.

It's those Tasmanian devils is what it is!!! It sounds like it was a pinched tendon or something but tendons don't usually get pinched, do they? Especially tendons under kneecaps?? Just another example of the tremendous strain these athletes put their bodies under and how all their nerves and tissues and muscles are stressed and often over strained. Thank goodness Rafa has Maymo by his side to keep that marvelous machine of a body working as well as it does.

I thought it was Mustard and that it was from the ATP site (but I'm probably wrong, lol). But hey, if you're a stats nut I'm going to believe you.

I talked about this when I first joined this forum and I stand by it. What happens is that people project themselves onto others. So since they are not at all that nice they can't believe anyone is. It just doesn't fit into their world view. So they assume someone like him is fake (the idea that someone is nicer or a better person than they are must upset them as well). One meets these kind of people all the time in life...

I've said I liked him in the first place because of his smile after winning a match. It just was so sincere and sweet. You actually can tell a lot about people from something like that...
That's he's so different on court I find quite fascinating.

BTW, have you seen him live playing doubles?.

It sounds from what he said that he's not quite sure of what it was himself, so either his team doesn't really know or he didn't understand their explanation.

Craig Hickman has a terrific blurb about Rafa on his blog. http://craighickmanontennis.blogspot.com/2012/01/quote-for-day.html

Quote For The Day

"On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?" Expediency asks the question, "Is it politic?" And Vanity comes along and asks the question, "Is it popular?" But Conscience asks the question "Is it right?" And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right."

- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today we honor the legacy of a man with a dream, a man called hero by all kinds of people in this nation and all over the globe. I hadn't gotten around to posting his words here because they didn't appear to have anything whatsoever to do with tennis.

And then I saw the headline "Nadal Insults Federer" screaming at me from yahoo's homepage. Yesterday, I peeped a bit of what the controversy was all about but didn't find an insult in what Rafael Nadal said about Roger Federer. Didn't see a "rift" either. That's how most of the other headlines characterized it. To my ears, a man simply said what he had to say. Clearly, given all the headlines, what Nadal said was neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he obviously thought it was right. He even repeated it when asked again. Federer didn't seem at all insulted. He simply suggested that Nadal has matured and speaks his own mind more than he once did. As my mother is wont to say, "And that's about the size of it."

People who have big crinkles around their eyes are usually happy people because their smiles are coming from within and are shining out through their eyes. :)

No, I've never been lucky enough to see him and Marc playing doubles live. Just lots of video. Have you?

No, I haven't at all, I'm afraid.

(Rafa's living up to his promise not to talk too much. Wonder how long this will last. :D)

Q. Was that the perfect kind of match for you? Because you played well, but you got tested by a good player and you get through in straight sets.

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know if it's the perfect match, but I won in three sets. I started match playing fantastic, especially the first seven games.

So everybody arrives late because they thought that I am late, no? (Laughter.)

THE MODERATOR: I'm so sorry.

RAFAEL NADAL: I usually am very late, so they know that.

Q. Were you worried when Tommy had the...

RAFAEL NADAL: Sure, when he had the break point at 54 with the first set? Yes. No, I had a mistake with the 52, big mistake with one forehand in one deuce.

I was a little bit unlucky at that game with the 54. I had 30love. After I had breakpoint again, but I was lucky that I had two aces in a row. And a third one in the set point, Tommy had the fantastic serve, too, and forehand winner.

So I end the set well. I started the second set very well another time. Second set was, I can say, comfortable for me, because I had the break at the beginning. I didn't suffer a lot with my serve, and I had the second break with the 53.

So it's important, the break, I had a very bad game in the beginning of the third. After that, you know, the set is in trouble. If you don't have the break back next game, you will be fighting all the set to try to come back, no? Finally I did.

I think he played well. He played aggressive. He played with very good second serves. For a moments his first serve was really difficult to read.

Yeah, I think he played well. My way has to be the seven first games of the match.

Q. How do you feel your game is at the moment?

RAFAEL NADAL: I really practiced well. I had very good preparation in my opinion. I practiced very well. I won already two matches in straight sets with positive feeling. I am well.

You never know. (Smiling.) We are in the first week, and, you know, every match will be difficult. Next one will be not be an exception.

Q. How is the knee today?

RAFAEL NADAL: Very good.

Q. Federer has the next day off. Would you like to have the same? He doesn't play because his adversary is out.

RAFAEL NADAL: Walkover.

Q. Would you like to have the same?

RAFAEL NADAL: Before the day start, yes. Now I played and I win, no, I'm happy. (Laughter.)

Q. Is it good to have a tough match like that early on?

RAFAEL NADAL: For me?

Q. Uhhuh.

RAFAEL NADAL: Good like...

Q. Like today.

RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry, but I'm not agree. Tough match is when you play five sets. When you play three sets  every match is tough. I cannot say I won easy; for sure not.

You cannot expect win easy against nobody, and especially against Tommy Haas. He's fantastic player. That to say, happy to have this strong match early on; I not agree on that.

Was a positive match, but not that very strong, demanding. We didn't play four hours and a half, five hours. Three sets, so wasn't that tough, thinking that all the matches is tough.

I would love to know just what Nadal found positive about his play yesterday because from what I saw,he was a defensive mess. The sooner he is put out of his misery and sent back to Mallorca the better. I have a feeling I won't have too much longer to wait for that to happen.

Nada had 36 winners and 17 unforced errors, hard to find fault with that. Haas was making it difficult for Nadal to be in attack-mode because Haas was keeping the ball up high and forcing Nadal back. It was that kind of trajectory that is hard to attack (although Nadal got to the net 22 times). You can't make all matches a flat-hitting slug-fest. Haas was trying to push Nadal back with high-kicking balls, and he succeeded, succeeded to lose in 3 sets because Nadal was too good. Haas is a good example though of a player who can hurt Nadal with the single-handed backhand. BTW anyone know what Haas was saying at the net when they shook hands? Was it something to do with Haas on the way to retirement and thanking Nadal, or something to do with the recent Nadal-Federer controversy?

I'm beginning to notice something about Nadal at the Australian Open. He doesn't drop sets here. He won 12 sets in a row last year before tearing a muscle vs Ferrer in the QF. Can't recall how many sets he dropped in 2010 and 2009 (though obviously dropped 2 sets vs Verdasco and 2 vs Federer), but looks like a surface where Nadal can either dominate by hitting aggressively or dominate by using his retrieving skills. Whereas at the US Open his retrieving skills aren't quite as effective, because the USO bounce is lower (so even when he runs balls down he isn't always able to get under them in time).
