Wilson Hits Homerun with Wilson Steam 99S (mini review)

Thanks, Couch- how different is the non-S than the S?

The non-S also feels a bit stiffer then S-version even if they have same RA. The open pattern of the S makes it feeling quit soft actually.

Those two new 99-frames is pretty different compared to the current BLX Steam 100. Very solid frames for being a 304 gram racquet. Very good platform for customization

If you had to pick one, which would you pick? I'm impatiently waiting for these to come out in January - would the Blade 98 16x19 trump either of these frames? I'm guessing the swing weight and power is greater for the Steam racquets.

Just wait another few weeks and you will see the reviews coming from TW users. I know I am excited to try one and see how well it hits.

Blade 98 16/19 is a very good allround frame, good spin, good power and also good control.

The 99 and 99s has a bit more power and are a bit more forgiving, but still has good feel.

The 99s has some crazy spin and even if the 99s didn´t feel like the best frame of those 3, it was without no doubt the frame that helped me cause most trouble for my hitting partners. They had problems adjusting to the bounce and misscalculated my shots etc.

That was evidence enough for me that the 99s is the best frame to use in "combat"

The narrowest gap between crosses is 14mm (near center) and largest gap is ~19mm (not counting the last outer strings)...

Putting the 18x20 blade next to the 16x15 steam you can immediately see the difference in "Shape" of the gaps. On the blade, the center cells/gaps looks squares (1:1), where as on the steam you immediately notice they are ALL rectangles (roughly 1:1.5-1.8) (w:l)...therefore you can probably do the math on that the area WxL and see that each cell is significantly larger on this "Super Open" pattern - that difference only increases dramatically when you compress/expand a co-poly like a trampoline in slow-mo video...

Btw, I need to do 720p video on YouTube (sorry about the 480p stuff I uploaded earlier) - I'm going to do another set of recordings and upload them

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've got an Rdis 200 as well, so the comparisons you make are pretty interesting to me, especially regarding feel. Poor feel is a deal breaker for me, so it's very nice to hear that these frames aren't all bite and no bark, so to speak. :) I'll definitely try the 105S too.

Unfortunately the local shop guy did not let me take the 99s and 105s to my match last night as another person was slated for the 99s. So off I went with the 105s. Had a good 20 minute hitting session with my partner for warm up after which he stated that I needed to "buy a case of those racquets" from my addition spin and control on ground strokes. So onto the match we went and it was 3 full sets, my ground strokes were good with this frame and the volleying was no less feel then my normal frames (Yonex Ezone Xi 100 and RSIS 200 Lite). Serving had a little more spin and kick to it and no less pass that I felt.

But the annoying thing was HOW MUCH the string moved. I am the only person who has hit this demo and it was for 30 minuets on the ball machine last week and then this match, and the string is moving far too much. This demo was hybrid strung and the Multi in the crosses is already very very clearly being sawed at and showing some marking and fraying. I am encouraged though about how frame will do with all Poly in there as soon as I get mine in January. After the match my partner again commented that I hit the ball as well as he has ever seen me hit in doubles. I actually really really loved the weight and feel of the 105s, especially when hitting singles and running all over the court, a lot of 105 frames are far too light and tough to control, but this one has nice weight distribution, perhaps a little tape will be needed for some players, but I am sold and cannot to have mine!

Hm, I got the same email, twice. When I clicked on the button in the email it looked a bit suspicious to me. Normally when I receive an invite for Linkedin through my email I only have to press the button and it accepts the invite. This time when I pressed the button I was directed to a site where it asks for my password. I did not enter it. Now when I log on to linkedin on their website I don't even see the invite from Hankenstein???

Yeah, it seems that your shop doesn't understand the principle behind the creation of these frames. Using a multi cross makes in a string pattern like this makes no sense. If the mains are getting stuck out of position the strings are not doing what these racquets were designed to allow them to do.

If you really feel that that particular 105S has sweet weight distribution I would ask you shop to put it on the RDC and write down the weight, balance and swingweight. Then when you go to buy one for yourself you can have them pick the closest they have from their inventory. When you find a sweet swinging stick you can have it again in another racquet as long as you write down the specs.

I plan on buying from TW since I just loaded up on the 20% discount cards and now have those gift cards sitting until these are released in January. I don't think I'll be too picky about the weight knowing that they vary a little....I am just pleased that the overall weight and HL amount for the 105 is where it is, as most in that headsize tend to me around an even balance for a little HH....and often only weight around 10oz. Cannot wait, the proof for me is my partner whom I have played 50+ matches with over the past 2 years giving his positive feedback and telling me to buy a whole case of them :)

I was just going to say this. A multi has to be the absolutely worst choice for a cross string on these. Obviously fully poly should give the best results. I am curious to find out how these do with a good poly main and syn. gut cross (OGSM, Forten Sweet, etc.)

Just as an update on this, I talked to the shop owner today about this issue. It is a store that has been in the area for 25+ years as a mom&pop place that EVERYONE knows about within 60 miles of here. The guy prides himself on knowledge of things like this so I talked to him when I took it back about an hour ago. He said that if he put a full bed poly in there that people playing this time of year in 45* weather will have no feel with the frame. I personally think he does it that way because it is the cheaper way to go, more economical for him which stinks. I am glad he at least had 4g in the mains, but the frame even clearly states to use 4g in the whole frame. It does say for added feel to use 4Gs, at least that is what I think I remember what was printed on the frame. I showed it to him and he said that "there would be no feel in the cold and people would blame it on the frame".

Oh well, glad to know that when I string it full-poly that my experience will only improve with this stick!

That is a good point. If it's cold out full poly will turn many people off. Of course, using a multi and getting lots of string movement and less spin isn't going to help either.

I went with some guys from my local tennis shop out to play with wilsons new frames today. Everyone hated the 99s. It was not cold outside, and I couldn't imagine hitting with it if it was. That would be brutal, for me anyway.

On a side note, the new Aeropro was awesome. imo.

LOL. There you go brother. Different strokes for different folks. With the Aeropro I was going from insane shot making and consistent deep balls to making perfect drop shots. And the feel was great. Again, for me anyway. The 99s just wasn't for me. Maybe the weather, balls, courts, I suck, hot lady on the court over. Who knows...

Haha, yes, the 'hot lady on the court over' can be quite a distraction eh?:)

Very interested to hear your preference for the Bab stick Could you say more re why the 99S wasn't your cup of tea. Also, how was the APD for serving IYO? Any different all all to past versions?

round polys versus shaped polys

are shaped polys such as Völkl Cyclone, Babolat RPM Blast, Dunlop Black Widow going to be as effective on the 99S as the smoother/round polys like the Luxilon 4G?

^^ Not necessarily. Shaped polys have larger contact patches where the strings contact each other, thus more friction, so they're less likely to recoil as rapidly.

A solid core nylon would be a better cross, and generally cheaper. I'll have to try one with Zyex Mono in the cross when I pick one up in JAn.

I would want to hit with it if there was a pro staff version. Not enough weight on the racquet to tempt me.

you can always add lead to make it to your liking. I hope this one is different in feel compared to older Steam racket. I didn't like the cheap feel of older steam from earlier this year.:???:

Sure. The 99s had the 4G string in it, so I don't know if that was why it was so uncomfortable. To me it was beyond harsh though. I got through 45 minutes and switched to another demo. My wrist was not having it.

As for the new Aeropro, it was a more powerful version of the yellow cortex version. I was totally comfortable with it though. Just a really easy, stable frame to hit with. I have gone back to using the original aeropro and second gen version, but I plan on getting the new one. I expected to hit with it for a few minutes just because of the stiffness rating and wrist issues, but I played it the entire time without any pain or even discomfort. Serves were good. I get more pace with the prestige pro, but this frame put more action on the ball.

I felt the exact same way about the Steam, even the Juice. For me the Juice was just too much power and hard to control, but the Steam just felt cheap.....I did not feel that way about the S line at all.

Did you also test the 105 steam spin ? that one is little bigger head and little bit longer. and did these steams have that traditional solid Wilson feel ? sold of like prostaff or older blade feel ?

I liked the 105s better then the 99s, but I am leaning towards getting one of each right now. Most 105 frames are around even balance for possibly a little head heavy, but this one is more HL then the 99s by 2pts. The 99s is only a half an ounce heavier, so it is not a huge difference....for me the feel was no difference. My doubles partner and I hit singles for 15 minutes, and he is very heave and deep topspin, but I stayed in there and and was able to take cuts at his balls and hit winners with the 105. We were both new 4.0s this year but went 8-0 in league play, so we are likely moving up to 4.5 at the end of next season if we have another good year.

I did not even notice that the 105 was longer, and just read that it was 27.5", but it felt very very solid. It was more forgiving on off center hits then the old Steam and the Juice to me....and the new Pro Staff line. I would put it along the lines of the K-blade.

I am really really considering 2 of the 105s since I did like them so much and up next to each other the only difference with the 99s is that beam size just a little bit. The beam on the 100 Juice seemed enormous for me, and the power was way too high with that frame, this one was a little smaller and not a launcher. Hope this helps, sorry for repeating some stuff :) Just get out there and try them both, it is the first wilson I have demo'd in a long time that I loved and have to have.

Thanks a lot. that is a awesome review. Only thing I didn't like about the Old steam was that it has more cheap feel. and Especially off center hits or mishits, racket became unstable. perhaps it was because steam didn't have that PWS system in the head. How does the new steam feel on mishits ? and does the new steams have PWS system in the head ?

Feel on off center hits is why I have only played Yonex for the last 2 years even though I wanted to switch to Wilson. For me, the 99s and 105s all were the best feel for off center hits, equally as good as my RDIS 200 lite and Ezone Xi100. The upper end of the hoop was probably the only weak part in my mind. It is a thinner beam then the EZone XI 100, and the 105 felt about the same size as that 100 in the hand. So to me it is a chicken or egg issue. I have more spin with the new Steam and hence more control.....but I am more confident with it which allows me to take bigger cuts which in turn adds more spin. Either way it is positive....and a guy who has known my game from when I was a 3.0 beginner 3 years ago (just started playing but played college soccer, in my mid-30s now) until now saying how great my strokes were with the Steam.

I am usually a "keep the ball in play" kind of player and charge the net to take advantage of my 6'4" height, but I have been hitting the ball machine a lot recently and now that I am taking rips at the ball like I am not used to doing this Wilson felt as good if not better then the Yonex I have hit. I even like it better then the VCore Tour 97 that I had.

My only caution to people is that I am a big believer in shaped poly string and new technology and stuff like the 16x15, so it could be my mind making me want to like it more then i should. Although I wanted to like the Juice and old Steam....and REALLY wanted to like the Pro Staff but hated them all. I guess my partners independent assessment of my strokes with the Steam 105s validate my actual feeling of the racquet, he has not stake in it except seeing my game improve....."buy a case" said everything I needed to hear :)

racertempo, thanks for all the insight on your playtest. What do you plan on setting your frames up with?

string, tension??? any customizing you plan on doing, etc??

I plan on a full bed of Wilson Spin Cycle 16 at the lowest recommended tension of 57 pounds in the 105s in one frame. The other one I am not sure yet, I have reels of BHSR 17, Pro Supex Blue Gear, and a lot of other random poly string including a bunch of individual sets of YTEX. I also really want to try Dunlop Ice, I am going to put that in my RDIS 200 lite this weekend to try for 2 months to see if it is worth putting in the Steam S line.

The 99s has a recommended tension of 54-64 while the 105s recommendation is 57-67. If I get a 99s I will do that one at 54 with a full poly. I usually have TW string them since they only charge for the string and not stringing, then I'll change them about 1-2 months depending on how much I play or hit them on the machine.....I'll post my thought on the setup for sure. I am very interested to see how the twisted and shaped poly strings respond with the 16x15.

I bought literally 1 of each type of string Ytex makes including their multi strings. Just bought them in 1 color as a few lines offer tons of colors. Will probably try the Octo-twist or quadro-twist first.

Id rather use smooth polys. More snap back. Polybreak, Cyberflash and Black Magic would be on my short list. I would not buy expensive poly since I would expect to restring fairly frequently.

I think I may have a 99s demo in my hands by the end of the week.

Curious as to if the spin gives the same sharp drop as Luxilon ALU in a 16x19 stick does. I have never gotten a ball to drop so sharply down as I have with Lux. To me that would be usable spin in a match, especially if you can get it with any poly.

Hitting super high trajectory is not really optimal all the time for me, but if I can flatten out balls and get them to clear the net a little more before dropping sharply in, I will be happy.

My Blade hits through the court a lot better than the new APD, and offers far more control and touch. So the 99s will be competing against that when I demo it.

Local shop hook up. Pretty much like everyone else. If you see any shops with a major Wilson display you may want to inquire about demos.
