Mto!!!!

I have seen players denied MTO before there opponents serve, the chair telling the player he has to wait before his serve, but often they are allowed to take a MTO before their opponents serve, at very critical stages, this should be mandated, you can only take a MTO before your own serve, none of this, I just lost my serve, I need a MTO, BS!!!!!!!!!

It's the trainers decision ultimately. But they're more strict about it at ATP and WTA tournaments than ITF.

Lame and ridiculous, but unfortunately what happened is not against the rules.

Absolutely pathetic, the tours should make a rule change. And add in something for your opponent, such as let their coach come on court and coach, something to deter players from this crap.

I've seen it before, I believe it was Yen sun lu, he wanted a mto, but the chair said not before his opponents serve, he had to wait until his serve, which is the way it should be.

they should allow the player to warm up with a practice partner while the opponent is off court.

It happens, and usually the chair will ask if he can wait. Sometimes the player says yes. BUT, if the player says no, the trainer has to be called. The trainer then decides if its an acute condition warranting immediate treatment.
As long as they are gonna allow MTO's, the chair umpires can't play doctor and decide when and if treatment can occur.

That was, indeed, a giant steaming load of BS. Too bad they weren't playing in RG, they would have booed her ass off the court, and rightly so. Outrageously awful.

Ughhh! That was total bs! Azarenka just admitted that she was just having a panic attack and that's why she called a mto

If you've ever had a panic attack you wouldn't ridicule it so easily. I have had several of them and believe me, they are no laughing matter.

I think Azarenka took that MTO because she wanted to cool off. She does not like the heat and I think it was getting to her. She should have had to wait until her own serve to go chill in the AC for 10 minutes.

Azarenka is a disgrace. A disgusting cheater. She has done it many times before, including against Radwanska last year. Tonight They were saying it was a knee injury, and she didn't even have a piece of tape on it.
I hope she breaks her ACL in final and takes off a year. We all need a break of her screeching, overbearing celebrations and cheating.
I know it's a harsh statement, but she took advantage of an innocent 19 year old who is trying blood and tears to succeed.

The rule should be modified, so unless you Shuzo Matsuoka on court, you can't get a mto, but if that happens, then medical staff can attend to you immediately.

Actually the rule is just the opposite. You can take a MTO like Azarenka, but there are no MTO's allowed for cramping.

Cramping is considered lack of conditioning, shouldn't inability to breath be one as well, unbelievable, who makes up these rules. I can already see a player, after a long rally can't catch their breath, but says, no I'm in great shape, I'm just having a panic attack, I need a mto.

Could be, but could also be a legitimate respiratory condition. Anyway, if a player brings up difficulty breathing, it triggers a flag, especially at AO when the doctor is supposed to closely monitor mtos with the trainer.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone that it was a total bs MTO, all I'm saying is the way the rules are now, there's really nothing that could be done. And if so, it could only be denied by the trainer, doctor with the referee staff, not the chair umpire.

Besides, the commentators said it was for a knee and something else. That word comes directly from the trainer.

Yep, a rib and a knee is what they said, absolutely nothing about breathing, until the post match interview, as she was laughing, saying she was having a hard time breathing, obviously it was a big joke, she was laughing about it, just really poor gamesmanship, no doubt about it.

But then why can't a player just claim that it's some other injury and not cramping and therefore be granted a MTO?
Then it's the trainers decision. But for cramping they are only allowed changeover treatment on 2 complete changeovers, no MTO. If they stop and the trainer comes to court and says its cramping, they gotta play. If they convince the trainer it's something else, the treatment may not help the cramps, they may just buy a few minutes.

Right, but did she say that's why she stopped, or was that in addition to the rib and knee. Additionally a rib issue could certainly cause breathing issues.

the trainer has no idea. the trainer does not want the responsibility so naturally the trainer is going to do what the player wants. face it. this rule is being abused. it's a lousy rule. they didn't do this back in the 80s.

Well anything is possible, but as you watched, she didn't stop, she got broke, hadn't said anything to the chair about calling a trainer, but then sat down on the changeover and made the call, suddenly she can't breath, has a bad knee, broken rib, then after a nice ten minute break, comes back out looking fine, just like before, and wins the match, no bad knee, no breathing issue, just a lot of gamesmanship.

Yeah, but a panic attack isn't an injury or a medical emergency. If you can't keep your nerves and you have a panic attack and can't continue, then forfeit the match. And was she really having a full on panic attack, or just a really bad case of nerves (I think the latter). And this is coming from somebody who suffered from panic attacks somewhat regularly in his early 20's.

But do you deserve to win a Slam semi if you're having a panic attack? No! You deserve to lose!

Exactly. Tennis is about survival of the fittest. She even admitted she was choking! She admitted it! She should be disqualified for that. Give the win to Sloane I say!!!!

would be fun if Dr. Djoker shows up next time the nadal is taking an injury timeout... :)

Would be even funnier if Dr. Djoker put on his white coat and treated himself when he next takes an MTO just before an opponent's serve (like he did just before Murray was about to serve for the title in last year's USO final)! :)

Serena had an actual injury and took ONE 3min timeout.
Apples and Oranges.
