Why overplay is not the question. He thought he could handle it and that it'd be a good idea because it'd help him get into form. Now he decides he better rest?. Doesn't that indicate that his knee is in worse shape than he had expected?.
It could also be that he doesn't want to risk injury because of the state of the courts, but that is not the reason he gave.
I guess it could also be due to how much he played in Chile. Maybe he had signed up for the doubles on both tournaments thinking that he could lose early in Viña.
Not a good reason to give when he has a partner who was also hoping to play doubles...
He may have sighted that he needs to rest his knee but the real reason is the courts are terrible and over playing on those conditions is a recipe for disaster.
He signed up for doubles thinking the courts would be up to a professional standard, now that he knows they aren't, he knows they will put additional stress on his knee which he is just trying to slowly gain confidence in and get it used to match play again.
