Why overplay is not the question. He thought he could handle it and that it'd be a good idea because it'd help him get into form. Now he decides he better rest?. Doesn't that indicate that his knee is in worse shape than he had expected?.

It could also be that he doesn't want to risk injury because of the state of the courts, but that is not the reason he gave.

I guess it could also be due to how much he played in Chile. Maybe he had signed up for the doubles on both tournaments thinking that he could lose early in Viña.

Not a good reason to give when he has a partner who was also hoping to play doubles...

He may have sighted that he needs to rest his knee but the real reason is the courts are terrible and over playing on those conditions is a recipe for disaster.

He signed up for doubles thinking the courts would be up to a professional standard, now that he knows they aren't, he knows they will put additional stress on his knee which he is just trying to slowly gain confidence in and get it used to match play again.

Keep trying to justify, GOATS do not lose to players ranked 73rd or 100th in the world.

In that case, Roger Federer isn't GOAT either because in 2007 he lost to #60 ranked Canas 2 weeks in a row and #53 ranked Volandri.

Not to mention in 2012 he lost to #87 Tommy Haas...

LOL, are you serious? If he had to play in a hc tournament right now against either Federer, Murray or Djokovic, he would be crushed.

Where did I say "playing against Federer, Murray or Djokovic"?.

They do sometimes.

It's all speculation. His knee not being well could well be the reason. I certainly hope it isn't.

Please. Canas was only ranked that low because he had just come back from a drug ban. Prior to that he was number 8 in the world so the ranking of 60 at the time did not represent Canas' true ranking or talent level. In addition, did Federer ever lose to a guy ranked 100 in the second round of a slam the way Nadal did?

You said you don't know how Nadal would do on hc against better competition so I thought you meant against the best players. My point is, right now on hc Nadal would be awful and would probably be defeated badly because he is even having trouble on his best surface clay against much lesser competition. I am sure he will improve as time goes on though.

Which happened because Nadal was injured. I don't care if you don't like to hear it.

You don't really believe this, or else you wouldn't keep rubbing it in how Nadal is losing to mugs out of the top 50. What we see with Nadal right now is what we get. He's not going to improve at all.

Nah, I am just trying to troll obnoxious Nadal fans!

I actually do think he will improve.

I have no problems hearing it, I just don't believe it. No way you can tell me Nadal was injured while playing the FO or W last year. It is not possible to compete that way and have a serious injury. Just because you are duped doesn't mean I have to be. :)

I do find his withdrawal from the doubles worrying.

Of all the things you could worry about with Nadal that is the thing if worry about least. In fact, it's a positive in that Nadal finally made a decision which improved his chances of success in the singles circuit and kept him healthier for longer.

Aww. I'm sorry he didn't treat you well, seriously.

That said, I'm hoping it wasn't a situation where you're North American and the tournament was somewhere in South America and you went down there with not a lick of either Spanish or Portuguese and expected people to understand you automatically …?

:-?

Seriously, I commented on this the other day (and I'm a FEDAL fan, so no bashing here) – Roger gives his pressers in English & French, and people cheer. Rafa gives his in English & Spanish, and people boo, whine, and complain. I don't understand it.

No, the tournament was in the USA

Well, Zeb took me by surprise, sorry. This post was before the Chile final of course and I must say I couldn't see Zeb winning it. But who could have predicted Zeb would goat all of a sudden?

yeah that one was a shocker. kinda wonder whether rafa was hurting, especially the way he let that second set get away from him. still, zeb had several scintillating moments, never seen him keep it together that well. almost couldnt be mad at him for beating rafa, zeb was sooooooo happy ...

Gee people, so much negativity :-?

He was not playing well when he came back in 2009 either.

You guys could try being a little supportive.

I do find his withdrawal from the doubles worrying.

Nalbandian had just played a marathon 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 . And the singles means a lot more to Nalbandian than the doubles.

Uhm, just two examples: Nadal himself in the Madrid final in 2005, and Robben in the 2010 World Cup (soccer).

I said "we" don't know, and I didn't mean them. Rafa came back against better competition in 2009 because they were not 250's. So the competition he lost to was better. We don't know whether he would have lost to an on fire 73rd ranked Zeballos had he played him then. He also lost with worse scorelines then. SO overall I don't see much to say he's playing worse now. He well could, he's been out a lot longer after all, but it's to be expected and certainly no reason for the kind of negativity here from Nadal fans.

I hope so too man. I didn't expect too much from him, and this is still below almost anyone's expectations. I really hope he can start feeling confident and playing somewhat aggressive again. It doesn't even look right seeing guys who's faces could be on a lucky charms box hit him off the court.

Cheer up. Rafa wasn't going at 100% out there today. It was obvious he wasn't running for shots. The court is terrible and the balls are awful too - everyone is complaining about them. Apparently they're leftovers from last year's tournament and no one has any control over their shots. The better players are either getting injured or losing...Rafa and Almagro are the only two seeds left in the tournament. Brazilian Bellucci got booed off the court after he lost his match today. It sounds like the whole thing is a complete disaster. I wouldn't be surprised if he gave less than full effort and loses to the first guy that plays well against him just to get out of there.

Awww. Poor girl. Rafa has that effect on a lot of posters here too. They cry and whine over him like nobody else. ;)

Ella Ling, the renowned tennis photographer who travels around the world photographing tennis said this:

9,000 capacity arena PACKED at midnight for @RafaelNadal doubs..never seen anything like the Rafa-mania here!

Now I will be the first to say that I did not see the match, but I have to chime in here about not knowing how Nadal would play on HC. Seriously, if he's playing badly on clay as I gather from this thread, there is no WAY he would play better on HC regardless who he played. Absolutely no way. I'm sorry, but that is the truth.

You are not a Nadal supporter at all. And of course you and RAFA2005 have something in common since you are one and the same person.

Based on what? That we're both Nadal fans, or like to start threads about Nadal? How ironic that you are accusing me of not being a Nadal supporter. I have been watching Nadal since Miami 2004, and have always been a fan of him. But I suppose this is Talk Tennis, the most paranoid internet forum in history. :p

Since D-Nal took the first set, I'm ... not quite sure what you're talking about.

Nico is good, but Rafa doesn't pick duds for doubs partners.

good point! :)

Nalby's back to his teletubby profile, but I love watching his footwork and his mind at play . . . oooooh that hevenly dropper, 2-1 :D

absolutely! not to mention that sneaky perfect lob :)

stadium is filling up in anticipation of the Spanish Elvis, but there are still plenty of Daveeeeed fans, as he seems to be wowing them with his tennis.

rafa hasnt played here since 2005, and i've never seen the brazil open with this amazing attendance during the week. it used to get rain-delayed a lot, so now the indoor clay ... kinda weird surface that . . .

Nico's very game, trying to run down everything that game, but he just got a LOT of exercise, as Nalby ran him all over the court ... Nalby's throwing in a LOTTA variety: almost 50% junk, which is causing me an emotional roller-coaster

VAMOS Nalby!
