I don't know how much longer Arsenal can go on without picking up a trophy, why would anyone want to extend Wenger's contract? No other top 6/7 PL team would put up with it (only exception is Everton who are lucky to have David Moyes).

I reckon no CL finish could spell curtains for AW.

I heard talk about them wanting to extend his contract?

It's a tough one after him being there for so long, but for such a big club, mediocrity is something that isn't really good enough, it's a dangerous place to get to aswell as it can be a long road back.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer.

But who replaces him? Klopp? Lowe? Simone?

And we all know Wenger won't be out of a job for very long. Real Madrid would still take him. If he was forced to spend big, he'll bring in quality and develop quality. Real Madrid will force him to spend, and spend big.

Don't know TBH but what a crucial and very difficult decision it would be.

Can't actually imagine AW anywhere else but on the Arsenal touch-line. Seems like he's been there for ever now.

As I've said before, if we make 4th then I'll continue to back him for the job; ultimately his mandate is to finish 4th and in doing so he reaches par expectation for the wage bill. It does go to show, though, that there is no ambition at the board level beyond financial stability, and the primacy of 'glory' seems to have been forgotten. If we fail to make 4th, in my opinion he should go. I don't buy into the mentality that if you cannot immediately name a 'world class,' proven successor then nothing should be done - when Wenger came to Arsenal everyone asked "Arsene who?"

At a realistic level, I don't think there's a chance that Wenger is sacked, even if we were to finish 6th or 7th. The only possibility of him leaving is if he chooses to.

From what I saw of Gala tonight, it looks like Drogba has still got it. Defenders just can't cope with his physicality. Would swap 3 Girouds (who cannot hold up the ball at all) for one aging Drogba!

True stories, Boateng was great, what a volley from Muntari.

Hope barca goes out, they bore the hell out of me.

I hope Pep doesn't come in and screw up Bayern next year and try and turn them into Barca north.

Nah Pep won't change a thing with Bayern, he'll just continue the trend and make a few improvements in their youth system and scouting. Bayern don't need fixing.

And good to see Muntari still kicking about, I remember him way back when at Pompey. Amazing to see where both parties have gone since those heady days.

I agree, he's pretty intelligent, to change what is already working so well would be silly.

That's one of the reasons i'm a bit disappointed he chose to go there. It would of been great to see if he could turn around a team. Imagine him building a team in his own image, improving the youth development at a club where they are providing players for the first team down the line etc..

Bayern already do all that, personally I think City are ripe to go down a similar route and the challenge of making that happen over the next 5 years would of been a good project.

I wonder if he some issues with the way that City is run by Abu D?

Bayern is a proper old Skool structure but some of the newer owners do things differently...cough red rom :)

City's approach hasn't been that different from Romans;sure the spending has slowed down in the last year but it was pretty crazy before that.

I'm sure he will do well but it was easier with Messi and Xavi running things.

I don't see why he would have a problem with the owners, personally I think they have ran the club very well so far. I feel they have stuck with Mancini for alot longer than alot of owners would of. They also seem very committed to the future with the time they are spending on the new project they have there.

I think comparing the City owners to Abramovich is probably as big of an insult as you can think of! ;) Haha. Chelsea might be my team, but the way the club is run, it does make me cringe at times. It's always been that way though to be fair, as a kid growing up we nearly lost our stadium, we had Ken Bates, were 1 game away from going into financial oblivion before beating Liverpool to make the Champions League (Abramovich came that summer) etc.. You do get the glory hunters, but why anyone new to the game would choose to support Chelsea, they're mad :) this season alone we've had a club legend who won us the Champions League be sacked, only for the owner to seek council from Emenalo (who came from teaching high school football to girls in America) who's master plan was to bring in Benitez. Ouch.

^^1 thing I will give Roman is that he's produced some winners over the last 8 years and also gives credence to the research that shows the manager isn't as important as the weekly wage bill. I do think that Fergie is a BIG difference maker though.

Funny fact: the highest weekly earner by 40 grand extra a week on the gooners is......Arsene Wenger. Something not right about that.

Fena, I know you watch serie A, are Milan always that impressive. I've only watched them in the CL over the last few years.

From today's Telegraph:

Put simply, Bayern seemed to combine the physical power and organisation of Chelsea last season with glimpses of the slick passing and suffocating pressing style that has been the hallmark of Barcelona. Theo Walcott, for one, looked slightly shell-shocked as he emerged from the home dressing-room.
“We want to be like that,
” he admitted. “They’re not fazed by anything. They have fantastic young players and experienced players who have been there and won a lot. They are one of the best teams I’ve ever faced.”

Will be interesting to watch Utd go forward without Gill. Just look what happened to the gunners without Dein.

Will be interesting to watch Utd go forward without Gill. Just look what happened to the gunners without Dein.

Before Gill there was Kenyon. United have had outstanding personnel driving their commercial growth right from the start of the PL, capitalising on / aiding Alec's success on the pitch to make them the behemoth that they are today.

And they also see the value in getting as many of their alumni as possible into the halls of power in order to steer policy and make sure their view is always aired (Gill seeking a place on UEFA's Exec Committee), just like Goldman Sachs and the US Federal Reserve.

Dein was that man at Arsenal, being a bridge between the manager and the board, while also being very influential at the FA (former vice-chairman), UEFA (former Exec Committee member) and the now defunct G-14 (president). Dein backed Usmanov's take-over and was kicked out (and also why he won't return). Danny Fiszman seemed to take on a few of these roles, but he passed away a couple of years ago. Most of the old guard are gone, apart from arrogant figurehead chairman Peter Hill-Wood.

I doubt Barca's president would have tried to push around a heavy hitter like Dein. Gazidis (current CEO) has none of his gravitas and appears to be just a businessman, rather than a businessman with Arsenal flowing through his veins. In a conventional business this wouldn't matter, but a football club isn't a real business.

They have looked alot better since Balotelli arrived, but they are having a poor season overall. I was very surprised to see them beat Barcelona, it will be interesting to see which Milan turns up for the away leg.

As for Chelsea tonight, i'm not sure which Torres highlight was my favourite! The 3 yard pass to Moses that he put so much pace on, in the wrong direction that reminded me off a noob on Fifa pressing the shoot button instead of pass, the way he tackled his own player when Ramires was running through on goal, or the way he took one to the nuts blocking a shot from distance by his own player. They were all classics.

Someone I was watching the game with commented that they thought he was trying to stop anyone scoring to make his own drought look better. Either way, it was good entertainment :) that's what you want for £50 Million really.

Well Maybe Nando is on the payroll of the bookies, with all those matches being investigated maybe he's been in on it for a while, purposely preventing Chelsea from scoring might earn him a few extra quid under the table.

I don't feel for him. If he had any loyalty to Liverpool like he always claimed he did he would have never left Liverpool, and they wouldn't have had to deal with the still-rebuilding phase they did. Suarez will be the next one to leave, I always thought he'd fit in better at Barcelona than Sanchez ever has or will. Alternatively Real Madrid will come calling eventually. He'll leave, and will tear La Liga to shreds.

Personally I think Liverpool did well out of the deal, he had been declining for a year or so when he left so to get £50 Million for him was good. It also allowed them to concentrate on Suarez, who came in a day or two before (possibly only because they knew Torres would be leaving). If Torres didn't go, maybe Suarez wouldn't of come? Who knows.

I think the only mistake they made was to blow £35 Million of it on Carroll :) imagine if they had invested that wisely? That's what set them back imo.

As for Suarez, yeah I agree, the potential for him to move to Spain will always be there. I think he will stay at Liverpool for at least another season though, if they keep going the way they are then they could be in the Champions League spots at the end of next season. If that's the case then I can see him staying.

Very nice momentum and energy at Spurs right now under AVB. It was of course at around this time last year that, under Redknapp, we begun that disastrous run of p*** poor form.

Now if only Gareth Bale could be cloned in case he picks up an injury inbetween now and Inter...

The club do an awful lot around the local community to be fair, it's something most clubs do, but never really gets much attention. I think newspapers prefer to make up stories that sell their papers than report the good things.

In the last two weeks alone we've had two apologies from newspapers about stories that turned out to be fakes, the argument between Benitez and Terry + the supposed "leaked" team briefing notes before the Wigan game. It's funny that both were big back page stories when they were written, but the apologies were written in a tiny corner stuck in the middle, forgotten pages :)

So yes, Chelsea do do alot for the local community. I'm not really sure how much that has to do with Abramovich though.

Here we come,

go city and go hammers for the rest of the weekend.

Agree, but suicidal tactics again today.

1-0 up, dominating, yet being caught undermanned at the back every time we lost possession. Really couldn't make it easier for the opposition. Every time we lost the ball outside of Villa's area they would get to our area without any of our players getting within 10 yards of any of theirs, and usually a numerical advantage. If we continue like this with no defensive midfielder Bale will absolutely destroy us on the counter.

Another blunder for Szczesny - he needs to shape up and fast.

Giroud, what can I say, takes too many shots to hit the target, 16 percent, not good enough.

Congrats to Swansea and most definitely Laudrup. I've liked how he's been doing things things since the moment he arrived at Swansea, and I wonder how he'd fare with a top 6 side. Could be worth trying to poach him if you were, say, Everton or Arsenal.

He took Getafe to the top 6 a few years back. Got Mallorca pretty high up in the table too if I'm not mistaken.

If Arsene goes to Real Madrid as director of football or to head the youth academy as they've always wanted, then Laudrup should be the #1 target, and if signed, should be given all the money Arsene was never willing to spend.

Doubtful. City are now, what, 8 points ahead (albeit with a game in hand) of Spurs?

Not a huge lead by any stretch of the word but I don't think piping City and getting 2nd is just not going to happen. It's possible though but I doubt it. It's probably as realistic of Athletico overtaking Barcelona's 6-point gap atop La Liga within the 11 matches still to play.......well, almost as realistic.

Another great goal from our very own Van Persie>Ronaldo>etc sets us up nicely as we come to the business end of the season. Arsenal game is massive of course. But even if the wheels were to come off in this 1 game a bit (AFC always seem to up their game several notches against us), I do not foresee a Redknapp-style all out 2 month collapse on the cards... just need to keep 'player of the year' Gareth Bale fit... and playing up the middle more probably!

It looks like Tottenham are probably favourites for 3rd, so even if you fail on that, it looks like 4th as a worse case scenario.

You just have to hope Arsenal don't pull off a miracle and win the Champions League :) coming 4th two years in a row and missing out wouldn't be ideal!

Nice to hear from someone else who isn't in love with Barcelona :) it can get a bit much at times!

Interestingly, they had a meltdown at the end of last season too where they fell out of several competitions over the space of 10 days. Last year could of been a one off, but if they lose to Milan then it seems like it's becoming a bit of a habit.

They'll then go out, spend big in the summer, and proceed to wipe to floor with everyone again next season. I think they'll buy Neymar, Suarez, and a few upcoming Germans and then just mop up La Liga like usual.

With all that being said, Puyol needs to call it a day. Di Maria made him look stupid on that second goal.

Do you think they will spend that much? I agree they will bring someone in, maybe Suarez out of the people you mentioned (I think Neymar will wait until after the World Cup), but I think he's pretty similar to what they already have. They have been linked with Bale every summer, but I still think he will end up at Man Utd eventually. I think Falcao would be easy to get for them, they have been a little bit more direct this year but they don't really have a number 9 to make the most out of it, someone for all the little players to play around in a way. I've not seen him mentioned, but on paper he would seem like the big name who would add most to them.

Not surprised really, he must be tired of all the banners & signs.Even at away matches so called "fans" are more interested in making statements, they should just be watching the football..I guess if you paid for travel, ticket for the game you feel like you have to participate, "play" the game.
It is just distracting the players though, shifting the focus from the team.
Rafa knows his days are numbered, he is just trying to get the fans behind THEIR team.

Chelsea have proven to be a difficult club to manage, there is an element of fans there that will never be satisfied. Despite a few players complaining, he is keeping a very disjointed team together. Just.

The owner is both the cure with his money & the problem, he manages to buy the players/managers but can't hold on to his managers. That won't change as long as he is there, when Rafa goes there will be a lot of money thrown at a new manager.

Pep. is much better off in Munich, smart managers should probably avoid Chelsea like the Plague. To be fair though you are only as good as your last match/season, look at Wenger, Mancini & others.

A lot of respect for Rafa for going in to Chelsea..after a champions league win & the euphoria that comes with it...he was always going to have a hard time. His Liverpool connection was always going to be tough on some fans.

I didn't see the whole interview but only the first? part where he talks about the fans, interim manager tag. I didn't see this as a meltdown just stating his case as a professional that the fans should support the team...

I think it is clear too to him that every manager's job can be terminated instantly(every job is interim).

Maybe he is just provoking Abrahamovich??

Torn about Rafa as he seems habitually to be a bit shy of taking full responsibility (both at Liverpool and Chelsea) for results which ultimately aren't good enough.

Then again, Chelsea are such a freak-show circus in terms of how it's run and the revolving door in the manager's office (Why did Ancellotti go? Why get rid of DeMatteo?), and the ego and stubbornness and stupidity of Roman in continually foisting the woeful Torres on each new arrival through said revolving door.

Anyhow, pardon me, Fena, for the following outburst... "Calling Avram Grant! Calling Avram Grant! Come in, Avram. Your ex-side needs YOU!"
