Did anyone watch any of the England U21s against Norway? I saw 20 mins and it wasn't very encouraging. One of the most obvious problems was that most of the passing served only to isolate the player the ball was passed to. We lost 3-1. Norway may go on to win the tournament but I doubt it.

But the thing is he's not good enough, and too old as well. Hell, even David Luiz is in front of him for the DM role.

Yeah, they probably did need a signing in that area, but Fernandinho would of been pretty low on the list for me. They wanted De Rossi, who's around the same age and 10 times the player imo, he would also of cost less than half of what they payed. If they wanted to go younger then Kondogbia would of been good, also costing half of Fernandinho and he has alot of room to grow.

I think they went after the right kind of player, but they could of got alot better for cheaper.

If true and Man U are really going after Ronaldo and he wants to come to Old Trafford (as reports are suggesting this AM), I'm now getting worried re Bale. I can't imagine Levy turning down anything northwards of 60 mil.

Moyes and Ronaldo, what a combination :)

Should give them enough to make the title race last beyond Christmas, but still not enough to catch the special one.

De Rossi for less than 17 million?!?! I know he's old, but if any club seriously sent in a bid of 17 million for him I think they'd be laughed at.

Elsewhere, I see that Dortmund have made it clear they'd rather let Lewa walk out on them for free next summer rather than to sell him to Bayern this summer? That takes serious balls, good for them for standing up for such a cause. That doesn't really happen all too much anymore.

Chelsea have been talking to Roma, the price they are asking for is £15 Million. He'd want £200,000+ a week in wages, which seems to be the only problem. Even taking that into account, he'd still be way cheaper than Fernandinho over the course of the contract. They're 28 and 29, so pretty similar in terms of age.

250 journalists, cameras from over 40 countries, and countless people bringing him cakes. Good to have him back :)

I'm glad to see he seems to want to keep De Bruyne instead of go for Schurrle. Cavani looks like he wants the move, whilst Draxler seems to be higher on the list than Hulk and Jovetic. Those look like good moves to me.

I like Jovetic, not really sure where he fits in though. His best position is probably as a second striker, where Mata plays. I think Hazard and Oscar would also like that position.

Cavani with 3 out of Hazard, Mata, Draxler, Oscar and De Bruyne behind would be incredible. Mata has only just turned 25 and he would be the oldest of the five by 3 years! Incredible.

Never heard about this Jovetic. Can someone talk about him?

He's a really nice player, he's about 6'2 but he plays like the typical 5'7 short creative players. He is very technical, great passer, two footed, great control etc.. He plays anywhere in the front 4 of a 4-2-3-1.

I've heard people compare him to Baggio, so that probably gives you the best idea of what kind of player he is.

I think any team would improve with him as an option. As a Chelsea fan i'm looking at players that will improve us the most, for me, that's a striker who scores goals and a couple of midfielders ideally. A Jovetic/Hulk/Draxler is more of a luxury buy as we already have alot of good players there.

Agree. Someone in place of Torres, Demba Ba e someone to complement Luiz/Ramirez/Lampard

Hulk is worst than any of your players that play at same position. It would be a step backward IMO

Absolutely, with Mata, Hazard and Oscar we just need a striker who can finish things off. Cavani is too expensive imo, he scored alot again this season but I saw signs that he wasn't at his best, it would be a bit of a risk. Lewandowski is half the price, but he has his heart set on Munich which is a shame.

As for the midfield, that van Ginkel looks close to signing, he's a bit like Hamsik which is good. Other than that someone like De Rossi who is a ball winner who can also pass and get things started would be ideal.

How is Hulk seen in Brazil? I've never really understood why everyone rates him so highly. He's ok, but £40 Million+? I don't really see it.

He's rated at 40 million because he can turn into a green monster at a moment's notice, score goals and smash up the pitch.

sorry, it was just too tempting.

Neither I, but these russians are crazy and pay any value for above average players.
But I like him because he supports my team :)

This is true. Porto are always tough to deal with, they always demand huge prices for their players. With Zenit and Chelsea looking at him last year, they were probably right to hold out for as much as possible.

Completely agree with this from Harry Redknapp. Will doubtless never happen what with Hoddle's past and the dimwits in power who seriously consider Gareth Southgate or Phil Neville as worthy candidates to take on the likes of Spain, Holland and Italy, etc at under 21 level. It would be such a good idea though...

"The last time we had an England team which looked to be heading in the right direction was under Glenn Hoddle.
"That's why I think he would be a great choice to become the new under-21 manager or to get involved in coaching of kids."

I agree, that England team under Hoddle was the last side who didn't embarrass themselves (the Beckham sending off apart!). You have to wonder what would of happened to the national team if he didn't make that comment. He certainly left before finishing the job.

On the Chelsea front, we believe Cavani is overpriced (which he is) and won't be bidding. That's fair enough, the thing that annoys the hell out of me is that we've been linked with him for years, and have needed a striker for years. Last summer his buy out was around £33 Million, he signed a new contract and it went up to £53 Million.

If the player is right, just pay it. It's like Aguero and Falcao all over again.

Hoddle's insensitive comments about the disabled still stick.

That England side was fairly interesting though, didn't we used to line up in a 3-5-2 under him? Seem to remember it being the default on FIFA 98.

We did at times. Compare that to have inflexible we are these days, it's worrying. The players were probably better back then, but we could actually keep hold of the ball. England these days are like Greece from 2004, except they actually won matches.

Some things seem to never change...

With this young England team faring, well, even more abysmally than you could imagine, Spain meanwhile have sauntered through to the under 21 Final playing some sublime stuff. For all those who think Spain's days in world football has passed and now it's all going to be about the Germans, maybe they should take heed. BTW, the Italians also need to be lauded as well. So, the future is looking great with these countries.

Meanwhile, we in England await the technical genius that is either Gary Neville or Gareth Southgate (or whoever)... Oh - and Hoddle is now on record as saying he wouldn't even take the job (in the unlikely event it was offered) as the FA's system is so shortsighted and lame.

I can't blame Hoddle for not taking it, even if it is unlikely he would be offered it anyway. He's right, the system is flawed. It would be good if he had some sort of role to play, he has some good ideas.

I agree on the Italians having some good young players, you see alot of them getting their chance in Serie A. When you think the full squad has the likes of Marchisio and Balotelli and a few others, 3 or 4 top young players added to it with the old heads of Chiellini, De Rossi, Buffon and Pirlo. I think they'll be ones to watch out for as a possible outsider next year.

The choices and decision making of Mike Ashley over at Newcastle, over a number of years now, simply beggars belief. How could he possibly think that bringing back the despised failure that is Joe Kinnear is a good idea?

He doesn't. It's all in the Spanish media, the Real Madrid supportive media are saying it to get back at Mourinho, who they hated during his time there.

The Barcelona based media are saying it because 1) They hate Chelsea. 2) They want Mata at their club and hope to disrupt him. 3) They think he's too good to be playing in England and Chelsea especially.

Mata knows how things work in Spain, it's funny he's come out a few times saying no way will he leave, the club don't want him to and he doesn't want to. Sorry Barca and Real :)

Apparently De Laurentis is in London to get the Cavani to Chelsea thing sorted over the next few days. Sounds good to me. Kondogbia and Van Ginkel for midfield, Mangala for centre back and we're golden.

I'm hearing Chelsea is sending Torres as a part exchange?

Good piece of business, that.

I'm hearing it's £49 Million straight up cash, with add ons if he is hits certain targets over the contract. It looks like the Madrid manager situation and the fact they wanted to include players in any deal left Napoli with only Chelsea to deal with.

I feel sorry for Torres, he seems desperate to work with Mourinho and he feels like he can genuinely rediscover himself. Maybe he can, but I think it's probably time to move on and give Cavani and Lukaku a chance.

I think they do want to give him money. They want to get the most cash possible for Cavani, and then invest alot of it back into the team. Madrid wanting to include Khedira or Coentrao and pay only £30 Million isn't how they want to go.

It will be interesting to see if he does go to Chelsea, where they will spend the £50 Million. They could get 4 or 5 good players with that, if Rafa doesn't mess it up!

Right. Baldini finally on board. Time to get spending me thinks... Soldado, Negredo, T. Ince, Afellay and about 5 Brazilians would suit me fine just to start things off. :)

I agree, they keep being linked with Bale, Suarez, Cavani and Isco. The players they want to sell to fund it? Khedira, Coentrao and possibly Alonso before his contract runs out and he can leave for free.

It looks like they keep making the same mistakes over and over.

Just to follow up on this, classy Barcelona at their best. I feel sorry for them in some ways, they've lost Guardiola, had a poor season last year and they think they can just buy whoever they feel like to get back to the top. Not anymore, unlucky.

Juan Mata’s future at Chelsea is secure, with Jose Mourinho planning to make the Spanish ace pivotal to his new-look Blues.

Mata’s Stamford Bridge future appeared in doubt amid suggestions the Special One was not entirely convinced by the former Valencia man.

But Chelsea will head off Barcelona’s attempts to prise Mata away by making clear to the 23-year-old that he is a huge part of the plan for the new season.

While reluctant to enter into any war of words with the Catalan giants over their Player of the Season, Chelsea are understood to be extremely unhappy at what appears to be an attempt to unsettle a player they believe will be one of their key players in the next few years.

Are things about to hot up in N. London with Spurs surely now closing in on the impressive Paulinho and Arsenal looking to capture Higuain, also very impressive? Both deals are now looking very likely.

Speaking for us, this has to be just the start if we seriously are entertaining top 4 pretensions.

Things are looking up for us both Ross.

Surprised that some of the pundits are already handing the title to Chelsea or one of the Manchester clubs. I personally think Moyes will be the weak link there. I like the guy but what has he won? I know he had no budget but I'll withhold judgement until December, especially after their starting fixtures.

Oh no! Not Paulinho and Higuain, Spurs and Arsenal will be racing away with the title by November

It's Spurs who need a striker, and Arsenal who need some kind of steel in midfield. I also think it would take better quality than Paulinho and Higuain for them to be challenging.
