Was there in Athens for the first three LONG days of the tournament. The bottom of the Ohio State singles lineup is really going to have to step up against Virginia. Overall, I think they (Ohio State) are going to need the doubles point and at least two points from the 4, 5 and 6 match-ups to win. Virginia will probably sacrifice Ritschard at no. 1 against Torpegaard like they did against Texas (Sigsgaard). So no. 1 singles is a lock for Ohio State imo.

Not sure where to put this. First trip to the Wake tennis facility today for the WS 250 and I was very impressed. Much better than Georgia IMHO. Look forward to returning

It's a great facility, glad you enjoyed it. The set up is a bit different though during the college season, as the center court and courts 2-3 don't have stands around them (they're currently temporary for the WS Open). The bank of college courts (practice courts for WS Open) are the main courts during college season. The NCAA championships this year will be great.

The bad news from Virginia is that Henrik Wiersholm had surgery and will miss the whole season. He did not play in the fall. Hopefully he can come back next year as a 5th year senior.

man, in previous years UVA probably could have played their 5-10 guys and kept UofR off the scoreboard

and Duke wins in the ASU program re-start
good to see ASU back out there - I remember well when I was in college and ASU suffered the unfortunate couple day stretch of losing in NCAAs and finding out that was not just their last match of the season

Virginia edges Richmond 4-3
Well Virginia didnt have their top 2 playing and then they didnt put Gianni Ross at 1. Some of the early Jan matches are puzzling. I went to the GT MLK event with Illinois, UGA, and Columbia.#4 UGA's returning lineup actually lost more of their singles to #23 Columbia, but they had Emil playing #1 instead of Wayne. If the matchups had been in the order of last year, UGA would have won the majority of matches, but it was an exhibition that didnt count with 10 lines playing. I guess coaches can experiment in these early matches. In some of the Jan matches, where Power teams are playing MMs, the power teams may put players in that will not see the lineup the rest of the year. UVA had a player playing who is a low 11 UTR. In a match against ranked or Power opponents, UVA has 7 guys over UTR 13 to play. I am sure the bench players enjoyed getting to play, but UVA probably didnt think it would be that close.

Virginia also has a very young team-only 1 senior. Technically there are 11 on the roster, including 7 freshmen (3 blue chip-will contribute, but 2 three star and one no star? plus one international) and 1 RS freshmen. There are 7 guys on the roster that are of the level to play ACC tennis-UVA better hope no more than one is sick or injured at time. Compare that to Wake with an incredible bench-10 players with UTR 13+, their 9th best player plays Future Qualis and has an ITA rating. However UVA is not the only ACC team with a shallow bench-add GT and your alumnus college Clemson to the list. I am curious to see who will play #6 for GT.

Wiersholm is out for the year and Soderlund is also injured and out for an unknown period of time though.
If both are out, Columbia could upset VA next weekend. Without the top 2, Columbia is even with UVA at 1-4 and a lot better at 5-6. Columbia did well vs UGA last weekend; GA has 5 players with ITA rankings, and 4 lost to Columbia in Atlanta.

However, Columbia barely beat Old Dominion today. Lost dubs but won 4-3. ODU is as good as a lot of power teams. Teams may be rusty after winter break...

I just don't think UVA is going to be very good this year. As noted, Wiersholm is out and they have very little depth.

Notre Dame has beaten Kentucky after losing to Kentucky 2-5 last year. Score is currently 4-2 with line 3 in a 3rd set. ND won dubs. Looks like this year NC State and Notre Dame could move from the bottom 1/3 of ACC to the middle, and GT and VA could move from the top 1/3 to the middle or possibly lower. I cant see Wake or UNC losing to any team besides each other in ACC.

That sounds about right. I would throw FSU in the same tier as NC State and ND

ACC tiers:

1. Wake
2. UNC

3. Florida State
4. NC State
5. Duke
6. Notre Dame

7. Virginia
8. Virginia Tech
9. Georgia Tech
10. Miami
11. Louisville

12. Clemson
13. Boston College

I think the Ole Miss-Columbia match will be a good one. The top player from New Zealand enrolled in January at Ole Miss. They will have a good top 6.

Notre Dame upsets Texas 4-3; 3 unranked ND players beat ranked Texas players while ranked Lebedev clinched the match at 1 in a 3rd set tiebreaker. Will be interesting to watch this spring to see how ND, Duke, NC State, and FL State do against each other to see who finishes 3rd and 4th in ACC after Wake and UNC.

Going to be a fun season! Wake and UNC both advanced in the ITAs with tough matches v Vanderbilt & Michigan.... Nice to get 4 teams in the ITA championships along w/ ND and Duke. Agree with previous posts that FSU and NC State should be in the mix as well.

Frankly, Wake was lucky to advance past Vandy. Wake looked fairly uninspired until Cungu was down 1-4 in the third set, with the match tied 3-3. It was encouraging to see him battle back for the victory, but Wake will need to play much better if they want to reach their goals. Wake can beat a second tier team like Stanford with a performance like that, but that type of play won't beat an elite team like UNC or Ohio State.

To be honest UNC did not look too elite either.

why would you say that ? Stanford has 2 players that can turn pro right now and be top 100. Does wake forest have players like that ?

Norte Dame got cocky and rested their top 2 players vs Boston College and very nearly lost. Needed set down rallies on courts 5 and 6 to eek out a 4-3 win

Carolina sneak a win, Illinois played very well and could have won. Blumberg has really struggled lately. Sigouin looked great at 2.

Sigouin has pro level ability. He dominated hiltzik. I see him having a blumberg level year from last year.

Blumberg looked really tired after he lost the second set. To his credit, vukis was unreal in the 3rd set.

Fun match at UNC tonight vs. TCU. TCU is a little down this year, but dubs should be good, and courts 1-4 should be good. I think Peck and Boyden will roll though at 5 and 6.

Gray-RKelly
Nunez-Simon
Stadler-Peck
