Nadal :

Maybe Nadal fans would feel that Nadal should have tried to develop a great serve to give him plenty of free points on aces? Imagine Nadal with a Sampras serve?

Federer :

Maybe Federer fans would feel that Federer should have changed his racquet earlier? or maybe he should not have tampered with his original forehand that reduced his potency on faster surfaces? or maybe he could have hired an ATG coach to help him on his mental stgruggles vs Nadal than someone like Annacone who was a failure?

Djokovic :

Maybe Novak could have diagnosed his allergy to Gluten earlier and raked up some slams in 07-10 period? Maybe Novak could have not allowed his dominance to wane in 12-14 period by letting inferior players beat him on the big stages ?

Serena :

Maybe she could have been a bit more focused on tennis in the 2000s in her physical peak?

Safin :

Maybe he could have been hardworking and not a party animal ?

Kyrgios :

Maybe he could hire a proper coach and be focused on winning slams ?

Likewise any?

Fed is so stubborn, so fixing that a bit would have helped. That and probably racket change a few years earlier.

But honestly, I think he did just about everything he could. Not much would have made a difference.

I guess both Federer and Nadal are lucky that Novak did not diagnose his glutten allergy in 06-07, or else today there would not have been a GOAT Race at all.

Novak would have been on 24-25 slams with other 2 below 20.

How could he have scheduled better?
After his Herculean effort in the AO his next tournament should have been IW. Instead he played Rotterdam where he hurt his knee in the F vs Murray. He should’ve taken the time to rest up, but he over played. Had he gone into the CC swing in better condition he most likely doesn’t struggle with Joker as much, especially in Madrid. Getting through the CC season easier means he has more in the tank heading into RG where I think a fresher RAFA doesn’t lose to Sod. Once he’s past Sod it’d be business as usual the rest of the tournament.

This is a misnomer. Federer never tampered with his original FH, the racket change was the sole cause of that. The racket change helped his BH but no question hindered his FH. So if he had changed his racket earlier, then his FH becomes a diminished shot from that moment on.

In 2007 his forehand looked different from what it was in 2006. He switched to the Wilson K- Factor 90 and adopted a conservative eastern grip. Most importantly, he shortened his backswing and began to generate more racket head speed, leading to increased wrist lag resulting with more spin. His use of the ‘windshield wiper’ motion became more pronounced. His swing began to resemble a vertical rather than a horizontal trajectory. Compared to previous years, when his arm was slightly bent, his arm began to straighten upon contact. To compete on clay, where he wasn’t having much success, his flatter swing began to become more spin oriented.

I know for Rafter it seems trivial but maybe not play Stuttgart and Paris to end the 2000 season. There were so many little things that only one difference could have changed his outcome against Agassi at the AO in 01. Then definitely skip the French (although plausible finals appearance if he just finishes Arthurs off) if only to give himself more time off the tour grind. I really think it would have capped off one hell of a career him winning AO and Wimbledon, let alone same year. I don't think those two events alone changing gives him YE #1 or even #2 which of course is weird but he had a really shorten schedule. But maybe he pushes himself more at the WTF for the rank.

Evert had a reputation for having the best return in the game for most of her career, and it is a well deserved rep, but oddly, she made a huge tactical error throughout most of that same career playing that return of second serve too conservatively against baseliners. Whether she chose to attack in and come in ( which she did religiously in doubles anyway, she had a fine enough volley once she got in) or belt it into the corner for a winner or gain early advantage in the rally, she seemed completely content to get it back deep and get that rally going and that did not change with her adoption of a modern racket. So players who took control of her second serve points, had no real worry that she might do the same.

It might have made sense in the early and mid seventies on slow clay courts, when her ground game was so superior to anyone else's, and the advantages were limited by those rackets and slow courts, knowing that she could well afford to bide her time in any point, but as soon as the caliber of baseliners improved, she should have taken a real cut at the shortest ball she was likely to see for a awhile. She did not.

Agassi not putting Sampras to sword in many important matches

I really felt for his fan when this happened. It was end of the beginning of his mental decline.
Sad to witness - One of those moment when you knew where you were when it happened.

I feel Barty should have won the AO instead of Kenin. I feel she cracked under the expectation of the australian media.

But how does he change that by doing something different?
By going for it just like the rest of the match, looking to attack instead of ping-ponging.
Its quite funny how the most agressive player of all time becomes so passive and plays who-blinks-first type of safe tennis on most of the important points which isn't his game, and its been proven time and time again that his normal game works way better.

I guess, but he just plays them tight and nervously. Just not natural for him.

Looking back now I guess not having the elbow surgery earlier would be it. The field in 2017 didn't show anything that he couldn't handle in solid form.

No US Open in 2012-14 is the elephant in the room results wise but that's more for the basic "if you could change one or two match outcomes what would it be" threads.

Sampras or Becker not changing their racquets to a larger head size towards the end of their careers. Becker played an exo in 2003 against Stich, both looked good but not hard to notice the easy power off of Becker’s fh firing off monstrous winners effortlessly. I believe he was using the Volkl Quantum 10 Tour with a 98 sq in head size. Possibly could’ve helped them both on clay too.

Rafa should have skipped Rotterdam 2009.

Why? He played it a mere week after his grueling AO win, and by the time he reached the final he was keeling with knee pain.

He would eventually develop tendonitis on both knees, that would plague him for years, and could have ended his career.

Even today, Kneed@l is a censored word in this forum. So profound were the implications.

Pity Djokovic could never get 10 AO's ...
Sadly he will never be allowed into that medical dictatorship again.

No regrets. They don't work

No regrets now. They only hurt.

Write me a love song, drop me a line.

Suppose it's just a point of view. But they tell me he's doing fine.

Rafa should have skipped Barcelona like in 2010 when he cleaned up the big ones on clay for the only time in his career.

Fed stupidly allowed Rafa to get into his head.

I re-watched the Wimb 2008 and AO 2009 finals. Both were winnable and Fed's BH even held up well in those matches. He was playing well, but wasn't assertive.

fed's BH held up pretty well in AO 09 final.
not so much in Wim 08 final.

Federer should've:
- hired better coaches in the 2010s
- played Roland Garros in 2017 and 2018

Not sure if playing FO would have done him any good, that is Nadal territory, going there can actually be damaging to the confidence built up at the AO2017 which was for the first time in more than a decade.

Better coaches? I agree, that Annacone was a total loser, hiring an ATG like Ivan Lendl or Boom Boom Becker would have done him some good, even Edberg if hired earlier in 2010 would have done wonders. Also the Racquet shift had to be done in 2009 itself after his loss to Martin Del Potro.

Nadal should've ditched Toni sooner. Toni's management of Rafa's down years were horrible.
Nadal should've developed his 2010 USO play with his monster serve.
