Good level-wise or in terms of exitement?

I would say an amalgamation of both. Novak picked his game up incredibly at the start of the third, and broke in impressive fashion. Fish though stuck with him, and the two had some great rallies. Novak got his best backhand and forehand shots in towards the end. And Fish did save a few match points, just adding to the tension.

It was certainly a better finish than when it started. Novak looked deflated at the start, and Fish could not win a break point to save his life. The third set made up for it, when Fish got the match to level terms.

Not a classic by any means, but not a blowout either.

I doubt it, I might find a stream, but I don't see anything exciting happening.

Only five matches, they are going to try to make them epic this year. Expect both title matches to go serious distance. I don't think they will top MITB though.

SS just feels hollow without something big or out of the ordinary. This is the first one I can think of without someone from the attitude era in it.

Mr. Kennedy will come back and cash in his MITB from 4 years ago.

Well, Triple H is there. And don't be surprised if Edge helps Christian against Randy.

McEnroe's 3 losses in 1984 were to Lendl in the final of the French Open, to Amritraj in the R64 of Cincinnati and to Sundstrom in the Davis Cup final. McEnroe finished 1984 with an 82-3 win-loss record.

Absolutely amazing and on all surfaces too.

Doesn't change the fact that after Canada, both had nine titles, and in the slam count it is 2 slams for Novak and one for McEnroe. So, so far, Novak has had a better season up to this point. If McEnroe did not bother going at the end of the year, that is not Novak's problem.

Even McEnroe stated that he lost in a slam as part of his streak, while Novak actually won one.

That's a good point actually. 9 titles of which 2 slams has to be considered a bit better than 9 titles including 1 slam even though it's through no fault of McEnroe.

Fish's post-match comments:

“I felt like I had an opportunity today, I really did,” he said. “I had a lot of chances in that first set, ended up losing 6-2 early. If you try to forget who you’re playing against, you’re just playing another player, maybe you can figure out a way to get a break or two there. I had a lot of shots early in that first set on my racquet that I’d like to have back.”

It was the fourth time that Fish had lost in the third set of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final, including a loss to Djokovic in 2008 at Indian Wells, and he expressed his disappointment of coming so close on numerous occasions.

“It’s really hard to get to these spots in the first place, and I've lost four of them all in three sets,” he said. “It’s really hard to take. I mean, just so much energy mentally and physically goes into going that far. I’ve never won one. I want it so badly. It hurts.”

After reading the comments, I'm even more gutted for Mardy. Hope he can win a Masters title before he retires.

Fish should have broken Djokovic's service at 2-2, right there he lost the first set; and when he lost the first set he pretty much lost the match. That said, he actually played a decent match.

Djokovic seemed uncomfortable but I think it was just an off day for him because he was actually hitting the ball well and moving well. Being solid throughout, and winning the big points sealed the deal for him.

53-1... 5 Masters, 2 slams... Sublime.

Even though Roddick won one, Fish should imagine being Roddick who is known as a one hit wonder. Get over it Fish. You blew your chances.

Anywhooo... Even though Djok played like crap today I feel that if Nadal or most other players of the top 10 were on the opposite end of the court, Nole would have brought his A game and still have won. Mardy Fish is a guy whose been on tour for a while now and just recently made the top 10, there are better servers, movers, ballstrikers, etc. than him so Novak might have come into this match a little....eh, especially since making the 2nd best player since wimbledon quit! Next time hopefully Nole doesn't under estimate a player or he could find himself with another loss.

The Fish Forehand:

I think a small part of his problem on the forehand could be that he plays with a 28in racquet (correct me if I'm wrong here). If he went shorter, it would cost him on the serve and on the backhand, but he might be more consistent with the forehand. It always seems to let him down--especially today--I think it cost him the match. Novak wasn't playing all that well.

Also, Fish doesn't have a very good inside-out forehand. That would have really helped today because it would have set up a backhand to backhand pattern, which is always a good pattern for him.

^Is it really 28 inches. Not 27.5?
Well, whatever. ANything longer than 27 is just too much, especially if you're going to have such a disjointed FH stroke (Fishy).
Sad for him. He had some chances.
Nole is tough. He played a notch below normal and managed to win the 3rd. He'll see that as a positive.

I also think this result was encouraging for Fishy and the rest of the top guys (Muzzer, Rog, Raf and maybe a couple of others). Not a bad day for the sport.
