2017 WTA. Major Predictions: Who will win?

PDJ

Threads on predictions tend to favour the ATP , so although I realise the women's tour gets less interest generally on TTW, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at predicting winners for all 4 majors.

AO- Kerber (or Serena)
RG - Halep (or Puig?)
Wimbledon - Serena
US - Konta

Only a fool would think that the ATP was more interesting than WTA this year.
Anyway my prediction 3 contenders each major

AO- kerber/serena/Mugu
FO- Mugu/serena/Halep
W- serena/kerber/pliskova (Mugu in the mixs)
US- kerber/serena/Azarenka(cause she'll be a back next Us open so why not)

Bump!
I did say the WTA gets less attention than the ATP but I didn't think it would be so little! :(

I'm awful at predicting stuff like this, but I'll give it a go. :)

AO - Kerber/Serena
FO - Muguruza/Halep
W - Serena/Kerber/Kvitova/Radwanska (wishful thinking)
USO - Serena/Kerber/Pliskova

I think that Kerber can repeat her 2016, she's self confident now after having such a great year, she believes she can win a Major, even if she meets Serena in the final and she's still young.
If she's injury free, I could see her winning any of AO/W/USO. At the FO, Muguruza/Halep sounds reasonable.

I never get notified when i'm tagged like this. Strange! Lucky I clicked this thread haha.

AO: Serena or Kerber
RG: Halep or Muguruza
Wimbledon: Serena. Can't see anyone beating her here
USO: Serena or Kerber.

Was going to throw Azarenka's name in for USO and was going to say, depends how she goes post baby but didn't really think about how quick she'd need to turnaround to be able to win a slam. She said she's due at the end of the year so let's say December, she'd need to get back on court within a few months (say March/April where she's defending Indian Wells/Miami). Can't see that happening. I had a google to see how quick Clijsters turned around from child birth to slam win. Was about 18 months. But she had been retired and other factors etc. I wonder when Vika will come back.. Will she stick with motherhood for a year so like Clijster did? Or come back quickly? Interesting..

Sorry went off topic!

I will guess that none of the three major winners this year will win a slam in 2017. Only Serena may reach one final. Number 23 will prove to be very elusive.

Let them prove me wrong. :)

Yeah, a lot of big things are up in the air. Will Sharapova be playing? Vika? How will Serena be holding up? How does Pliskova do in the fall? Too many things to ponder. I will have to sleep on it. Or maybe wait until YEC. Curious what happens there.

No Kerber, Serena or Muguruza?!?? Who would win!?

Out of active slam winners that only leaves:
Stosur (maybe at the French if the courts are drenched like they were this year)
Schiavone (might as well be retired)
Ivanovic (just no)
Azarenka (off pregnant)
Kuznetsova (hmm)
Sharapova (ban)
Kvitova (maybe)
Venus (doubtful)

So who? Halep? Pliskova? Radwanska (I can't even hahahahaha), Suarez Navarro?! Keys? That's everyone in the top 10 covered?!
Who would get the others? Genuinely interested! I love seeing predictions.

It would be great to see all new winners - realistically it would take some luck, and big names falling early/injured, but Radwanska, Halep, Cibulkova could sneak a win.
And I'm still hopeful for Konta or Puig.
I love predictions to :)

Thanks to everyone for contributing thus far.

Can't fathom Puig doing it haha. I know she blitzed it in Rio for 2 weeks and maybe if she had a great draw but I just can't see it. Konta I definitely could see with a good draw. Avoiding Kerber and Serena.

I'm so used to Serena making it deep in slams that if she fell early and so did Kerber, it could be anyone's game, especially with Azarenka out of action.

Similar to Lori McNeil beating Graf early at Wimbledon - the draw absolutely opened up and the lucky recipient. .... Concita Martinez! Who saw that coming???

Pliskova will be one of the most interesting player to watch in 2017. The serve, the easy power off her groundstrokes are tops. If she can improve her consistency, control the nerves better than she did the last half of third set in U.S Open, improve the volley... she could make another slam final or two.

That said, Kerber knows 2017 will be a big chance to leave her mark on the game of tennis. With Serena in the twilight of her career, Kerber will want to establish herself as the solid #1.

2017 will be the year of Serena's revenge. She'll want to reestablish herself as the dominating #1. The big question mark for Serena will be #1 health, and #2 motivation... #3 WADA.

Sugarpova- Suspension lowered 6 months. Will be back for U.S Open. Will beat Serena in quarterfinals.

The rest of the field... second verse same as the first.

A.O- Kerber
Wimbledon- Serena
French- Kerber
U.S Open- Pliskova

I don't want to prognosticate on matching slams to winners but I will say that I'd put money on one of these three winning her first slam in 2017: Halep, Keys, Pliskova.

Also, I think we'll see at least one new slam winner hailing from a post-Soviet republic (incl Russia) in the next two years because there are a bunch of ladies from that part of the world who are rising fast.

Happy to put my hand up & say I just don't follow WTA enough...or at least not before at least the SF stage of Slams...to make any well informed predictions.

General thoughts however are that we haven't seen the last of Serena & she will win at least one Slam next year, possibly 2 (AO & Wimbledon her best chances). Kerber should win at least one more in 2017, if she doesn't it will be a fair let down, again her best chances are pretty much anywhere other than French.
Muguruza will probably enter French Open as favorite but really anything could happen there, be interesting to see how Puig fares and I also think players like Keys, Halep & even the likes of Stousor & Kutznetsova would be looking ahead to 2017 French Open as a prime opportunity to sneak a Slam in 2017.

Think Putinseva stands a chance? She's pretty small, but just seems so...hungry.

Anyway, I think Halep will win one next year. And though my heart wants to say Konta will too, but head is telling me that's never going to happen.

AO - 1) Serena ; 2) Konta 3) Cibulkova

FO - 1) Stosur 2) Serena 3) Bacsinszky

SW19 - 1) Serena 2) kvitova 3) Pliskova

USO - 1) Serena 2) Muguruza 3) Vesnina

I'll be very surprised if Kerber wins more than one major next year or even one major. We haven't had a consistent winner since Serena in so long.

Also interested to see how the tennis bot aka Pliskova does next year

Putintseva looks good but I've also been impressed with Kasatkina and Ostapenko. They have a little ways to go before they threaten the ladies at the pinnacle but both have risen quickly. Svitolina and Sevastova are also doing very well.

Completely agree...while she may be a future Slam winner it's pretty tough to include her in any predictions at this stage based upon her current record at Slams. Sure she beat Muguruza and Kerber on the Rio HC's but I don't think I'm going out on a limb to suggest Olympics have a habit of producing the odd upset here and there.
Her win in Rio has obviously created a level of expectation for her but until she can find some form at the Slams I won't be putting any money on her.

If Serena isn't at her best anymore and if Kerber can't maintain her 2016 level, it is wide open next year. Everybody above including Konta, Puig, Svitolina, even Bacsinszky or Bencic could suddenly click it together for a major and just like that you have two surprise finalists. I'd also like to see Osaka improve and fix her dtl bh and she could have a deep slam run.

Azarenka wouldn't be back until like 2018. If and when she is back, it will be all hers.

The women's 4 slam 2016 finals were better than the 4 mens finals. The women seem to be "getting" it. First Serena and now Kerber, they are playing more like ATP, more patient in rallies, maintaining medium energy balls for the majority of the time while working for chances to find an angle or dtl. Pliskova has grown a lot over the past couple of years, I wouldn't mind her in another big final.

Yeah definitely agree. I'd throw in Cibulkova's name and probably take out Svitolina. I thought Svitolina would do more by now, she added Henin as her coach (talk about a supercoach!) yet hasn't had any luck with her. Unless things change, can't see it happening. Puig maybe some day but besides Rio, she just can't string a bunch of match wins in a row. Bacsinszky i'd love to win a slam, Bencic has been injured but if she gets back to form then hell yes! Konta for sure, she built on her success at the Aus Open. I'd like to see Bertens do the same but who knows.

Makarova and Safarova are two more names who have chances, both recent top 10 players and Safarova a slam finalist, but both fell off the top of the rankings due to injuries.

How about a CYGS for Navratilova/Hingis AKA Martina Squared in women's doubles while we're at it?

Serena will not win anything next year.
It's hard to count her out though, especially at Wimbledon.
Not a fan, but she made 3 finals, winning one, & semi in all 4 majors.
I think she can only be seriously on her way to retirement when she consistently stops making the second week at these tournaments. And even then, it's not a given she will retire - it depends on whether she's comfortable with losing earlier than later.
Her sister has had a great year compared to some other years, so it's really hard to predict when SW chooses to go?
Personally, I think it's good for the real champions of the game to stick around for a couple of years after their best- to pull off some unexpected victories and go out knowing they've pushed it to the max.

Predicting the winners of WTA tournaments is basically equivalent to predicting the lottery numbers. It's far too unpredictable. The top players (bar maybe Serena) are wildly inconsistent and too many one slam wonders.

I mean, after her French Open win, all the experts were saying that Muguruza is the future of tennis, she can challenge Serena, she will win multiple slams blah blah blah. Yet she completely flopped at Wimbledon and US Open. This example is WTA tennis in a nutshell. I fear this is the way ATP tennis is heading after the the big four retire.

FO - someone from the top 100
W - someone from the top 100
US - someone from the top 100

I'm wishing it's Key's breakout year. More likely she'll continue putting gray hairs on my head.
Still hoping Serena has enough in her to get to 25 slams.

AO: Serena
RG: Muguruza/Vika(if she's back)/Serena
W: Kvitova
US: Serena

I agree it's unpredictable but I find it to be good stuff. You have these youngsters finding their way, winning some, falling back. Soon it will get sorted and the greats will arrive. The press declares them the next big thing is the press doing what it does, that doesn't mean they're not going to be.
For now the young women are at least making those inroads. The young ATP pro's aren't even doing that yet. Seems they're waiting to get there through attrition instead of stepping up and taking some of it.

Australia- I think this will be either Serena or Kerber. Really cant see anyone but these two winning here, and I think this will likely be the final, and is a toss up.

French Open- This is the most wide open slam. I think Garbine has a good shot to defend and might be the slight favorite. She is inconsistent so far, but usually plays well at Roland Garros. Serena will be hungry to join Graf as the only women to win each major 4 times so has a good shot. Kerber's game should be good for clay, so there is no reason she cant win here. Halep nearly won the title once so should have a shot. And if her suspension is shortened this will probably be Sharapova's last good shot of winning a major, as long as she avoids Serena.

Wimbledon- Kvitova or Serena will win IMO.

U.S Open- I think Halep has a good shot to win her first major here. Serena has a really good shot here. Kerber has a decent shot to defend. Those 3 the favorites.

Good choices - although Kerber is probably weaker on clay than hard, or grass.

So far Kerber is weaker on clay than grass, but she shouldnt be. I am baffled by her lack of clay expertise so far, and am thinking/hoping that changes. Either way she still has more shot to win RG than Wimbledon, even if she is better on grass, since on grass she cant touch Serena or and in form Kvitova, even in form Garbine would overpower her. Clay is wide open since nobody is that great, so even if she remains weaker there her shots to win there are still better. Clay has sucked since Henin retired, even Maria winning there twice.
