I feel like Domi has more than 40% chance, he is fitter than Djokovic and more powerful. He can definitly blow Djokovic off the court if the latter doesn't bring his A game.

Djokovic is Djokovic though so he's the favorite.

My prediction is Thiem in 4 or 5.

Considering I've never seen DJ "blown off the court" in any round past the 3rd, aside from injury or sickness, that's some bold words, my friend.

Fitter? For long clay rallies? Maybe, OK. But on hard courts or grass, DJ is *just the right* kind of fitness. (Think, leopard.)

Plus, lest anyone forget—DJ is The Gumby. He stretches exactly as far as he needs to ... to whup your a** ... but no further <wink>.

And, like all greats, isn't scared to take a respite—play out-of-the-box tennis, should he get down a break—to learn the other guys game, on their dime, while he "loses" 4-6. (Other player: "I've got him! I'm gonna roll now .... !" )

Of course, then Nole uses that knowledge to chop the other guy up for two sets.

Novak in four.

If Thiem wins, I feel it will send shockwaves throughout the tennis world. And all the young and rising players along with Kyrgios, Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas will be even more motivated to go out there and fight even harder. Thiem winning would be a huge inspiration for the young players trying to make inroads. This is a bigger Slam final than people are realizing. It could completely disintegrate the big 3 stranglehold on the Slams.
It could? On the other hand it could just be normal service and we move on. Thiem needs to play his A game and may need to go 4-5 hours again here to even have a chance to beat Djokovic here. Will be a good battle though but going for Djokovic in 4 sets!

I hope Thiem can win tomorrow and win his first grand slam. It would also be symbolic to end Rafa and Novak’s reign at the start of the 20s decade. That is what I am hoping, but Novak is of course favourite. Still, hope Thiem can do a Stan and he’s won 4 of the last 5 encounters with Novak, including the extraordinary one at the O2 last year. It’s also about bloody time for someone new to win a slam in the men’s game. Who is the last first time winner? Cilic 2014 US Open?

Yes. Cilic was the last first time winner. And prior to that Wawrinka in 2004 AO.

Anyone other than Big 3 winning a slam is itself a big event

I don’t think it will be enough, in part because of something Thiem said after his win over Zverev.

“It’s unbelievable, twice in Roland Garros finals, twice facing Rafa,” he said. “Now facing Novak here, he’s the king of Australia, so I’m always facing the kings of the Grand Slams in these finals.”

“I’ll try everything I can to win…if I walk off the court a loser in two days, I have to be patient, trust the process.”

Thiem, in other words, can take some satisfaction in defeat. Djokovic can’t. That could make all the difference.

Winner: Djokovic

NGL I was more hopeful before I started re-watching some recent Thiem-Nole highlights.

I have a bad feeling Tim will go balls out and really trouble Novak, get a lead and then blow it. In both their RG & YEC matches last year Thiem served for the match and was broken both times. We also just saw it again the other day against Rafa. I know he eventually got out of those situations, but it's really hard to imagine Novak on RLA letting him get away with those kind of mental lapses.

Thiem is one of those players who could push Novak behind the baseline with their heavy hitting (similar to what Stan normally does), so it'll be quite a different challenge for Djokovic to deal with the balls in a neutral rally. If Thiem's return clicks, it could be a very close match, though I think Djokovic's advantage in this department is obvious and I expect him to eventually exploit Domi's return with his great (both first and second) serves. The conditions will be pretty slow, so it probably will be a grind fest all day long.

Novak in 5 because this is his turf, but Thiem means business and I wouldn't discount him, and I'm glad he finally beat his nemesis in Majors. Hope it could help him for the rest of this year.

True. He also blew leads in both sets in Madrid 2019. It can be said Djokovic just outplayed him in the first set, but in the second set it was a choke. And if we go back to Monte Carlo 2018, the first set was some hell of a choke from Thiem. Yet he went on to win the next 2 sets. So yeah, Thiem choked at least once in their last 4 meetings, yet ended up winning 3 of them.

Every great has to face eventual defeat and if it happens vs thiem, even nolefams shouldn't be sad.
You can be sad, but at least it won't be devastating like you were blindsided. The writing for Thiem has been on the wall for a long time now. It's his 3rd major final and he's beaten Novak in slams before. Kind of like the Wawrinka loss in 2014. I'm sure it hurt, but after the two 5 setters in 2013, you'd had to have known there was a serious chance Novak was in danger.

You must have started watching Djokovic recently and must have missed the countless beat downs he received in 2017 when he was dwelling in Pepe-Land. How about losing 6-3, 6-1 to Nadal in 2012 at MC? Verdasco beat him 6-2, 6-2, and in 2011, his grandest year, Ferrer laid down a 6-3 6-1 smack down at the YEC. None of these were early round matches.

Thiem definitely has a tendency to blow it when serving for sets or matches, in my experience. That said, is it choking or the small margins he serves with? Because he was fine in the tiebreaks.

Def would not be a shock if Thiem won. That said, its prob still gonna be Novak. His skill set is just much more varied and polished compared to Thiem's. He's mentally tougher. Thiem will need to ball out to win. Even then if Djoker balls out he wins anyway.

You are right. There is fair amount of respect for thiem among nolefams already.

No it's definitely mental. If you routinely hold serve 4 times and blow it on the 5th, that's not the margins suddenly coming into play.

Just look at the 4th set TB against Nadal. On his first match point he nails a 1st serve, Rafa floats back a soft return that. Easy point for Thiem right? It's just sitting there, waiting to be killed like every other ball the previous 3 hours.

And he puts it into the net.

I wonder who the crowd will be cheering for. Crowd were cheering Federer in the Djokovic match and Nadal in the Thiem match, so I guess the crowd doesn't like either of them?

Hitman's back, he was posted yesterday, he said he was going to be gone a couple of days, but has returned. I predict @Hitman picks Nole in four tight sets.

I'm back just been more focused on TTW Jeopardy at the moment, since I am hosting that straight after the final. LOL :D

Bash and Hope has a chance , he showed some brain for the first time against Zverev. Although his game is very risky , hitting almost everyshot with full power
is going to give up on you sooner or later. I Hope Djokovic wins , doesnt matter 3,4 or 5.

Thiem has a not so good record in finals, that's the problem. Even in WTF he found a way to lose to Tsitsipas after beating Federer and Djokovic. So obviously it's hard to believe he will be able to break this curse against Djokovic in an AO final.

Ah ok. So Djoker only needs 1.5 hours and play his B game to win tonight if A level Thiem doesn't show up? Djoker might need to play the match of his life if Thiem brings it.
