He didn't smack the ball at all. He simply emptied his pocket after the game was over, and sent the ball back without looking. OK, it was careless, but this was clearly not intentional, and the ball was not hit even too hard.

OK, I guess rules apply to everyone but this is simply a ridiculous way to end his US Open.

My friend...it has nothing to do with the person's ranking...I would have said the same with Federer....No one who's defaulted has ever done it with malice or an intention to hurt...It's good for the integrity of the sport that Djokovic, the world number one got no preferential treatment....He made a mistake albeit unintentional...I feel its the right decision for the sport....
