The Frenchman was two sets to one ahead and while he was a break down in the fourth set, he was still causing Roger Federer all sorts of problems. And then he slipped over and his right knee buckled under him. He landed in a heap on the grass and took his time to risk the business of standing up.

When he did – and after the trainer had assessed the situation and provided painkillers – he was never the same again. It was the cruellest of blows: he was so close to causing the sort of upset that people would talk about for years.

So, so close. The fall happened in the seventh game of the fourth s
et but just a handful of points later, Mannarino knew he was fighting a losing battle. One point into the fifth set, he threw in the towel.

“It’s awful,” Federer said.....

Mannarino was playing possum - he had to nick off to Glasgow to take his place in the Swedish defence in their match vs Ukraine.

I think that's it mostly. I don't buy the rust talk, Fed plays fine with little matches/limited schedule. His movement and footwork is off and he seems to be constantly on the look-out not to put too much pressure on the knees.

yeah and it looks like the grass is slippier thisyear, he talked about how carefully he was moving as result, i think for him he's just extra afraid

After seeing what happened to Serena I've changed my view and now feel a lot more sympathy with what happened to Mannarino. Seems like the organisers need to do something about the way the grass is playing, especially on Centre Court.
Wimbledon officials are having a tough contest against Roland Garros officials this year, to determine who’s more inept.

Shame for Mannarino.

Not sure what to make of Fed's performance. There were some flashes of the old brilliance still. He still seemed to be physically ok in the fourth set.

I'm hoping that he is ok with his body and can play himself into form here, without spending so much time on court that it costs him later.

But he could just as easily lose against Richard in the second round ...

^ Triggered
Triggered about what? I’m a Federer fan. Him playing badly and winning due to his opponent’s injury just doesn’t exactly fill me with joy. Fyi this may have been Adrian’s last Wimbledon as he’s not the youngest.

But I see you have no problem gloating:

OMG Mannarino is done! Fed advances!:love::love:o_Oo_Oo_O
I'm not going to lie, I'm hoping this helps Federer here. Would much rather see this show continue.

Mannarino barely moving and Fed easily holds now.
I'll take it.
All Federer needs is a few more well placed banana peels and he may yet advance to the final :giggle:

Triggered by my 2014 AO reference, clearly :giggle:

You don't feel joy because Federer gave a blah performance and you have no faith in him or hope at this point as a fan. I feel joy because the TV show that is Roger Federer continues, and I look forward to the next episode, win or lose I am simply looking to be entertained :giggle: and Federer remaining in the tournament provides that

Well that wasn't an entertaining match by any means. You must be the guy that watches the history channel on Friday nights when you say you're going to party

If there is anything positive for Fed (apart from the fact that he ended up winning) is that he found his FH in the later stage of the match. He hit 8 FH winners in the fourth set (only 7 FH winners in the first three sets combined) and he looked like a dominant player once again. Hope he can maintain that consistency in the next matches.

The biggest issue with the match was his movement. He just looks slow. I noticed it at the French and said it on a Federer hype thread a few days ago. I don't remember thinking this when I watched him before the injury.

He was out for over a year. The expectations for him should be zero. You might be able to see what he'll be capable of in 6-9 months. This whole "my season starts with grass" was always a sham and his performance at Halle proved it for me. He actually looked better on clay.

Can you please not post scores from the matches in a tennis thread? I avoid soccer sites if I am PVRing a game, but I didn't think I would need to avoid a Federer match thread as well. Not everyone watches it live.
sorry man...didn't know. It happened as Mannarino went down with injury

No problem, not the end of the world. But it was a noon kickoff in eastern NA, so likely a lot of people PVRing.

Would have been a perfect time to use a spoiler tag: [ spoiler = "Eurocup score alert" ] 2-0 England [ / spoiler ]

2-0 England

Yes, this is an excellent suggestion.

Federer can his best tennis for just 60-70 minutes. That's all. After that he fades away. It has happened to him in every tournament since comeback. Not sure what is problem with him.

If you don't think there's a certain fascination and entertainment to watching what could be Federer's last Wimbledon match, you must just not be a fan of tennis. And that's okay :)

Imagine thinking it isn't more entertaining to have Federer in the draw, in any state, than Mannarino lol o_O:laughing:

In the 4th set, Fed looked up to the box where the CEO of Uniqlo was sitting, and the CEO was making a "neck cutting" gesture, so Fed started playing a little better.
Did they make a threatening call so he should tank the match for Federer's sake?

I am sorry but if they are going to keep producing conditions like this it is not good enough for a Grand Slam event. The court was sh1te #onon

Don’t count Norrie out either.

Not a Norrie believer but I appreciate he has plenty of supporters. I wouldn't say I would count him out but I don't consider him a threat to the title.

Confidence and rust. And of course, age as well. But once he recovers his confidence and believes in his body and instincts a bit more, he will start to play better. Still won't be anywhere near enough to win a GS I suspect.

Only positive coming out of this is Federer gets 3 hours of competitive match practice. He survived and going to play another. He is not contender for Wimbledon but going deep will help him to rebuild his game and match fitness. That might help in future.

How much deep you see him going realistically? I think he can lose in any round. At best he will go to QF and lose to Medvedev IMO.

It's not his last Wimbledon. You think he's going to go through what he did and go out playing like ****? He loves playing. Stop being dramatic.

If he lost R1 it would be his last, yes. He's going to fall off a rankings cliff soon.

Note that Fed won 83% of his net points - and given his forehand and lateral movement have literally disintegrated right now, he should definitely attack the net and S&V much more.

You are right, he can lose in any of the next rounds. It's been a roller coaster season for him, there were glimpses of the vintage Federer (that fourth set against Mannarino was exceptional, cranking his forehand and bringing the aggression that anyone would find tough to defend against on grass) and the periods where he had no forehand and the footwork/movement was very off.
I just hope he finds his form and has a good run, that's all we can hope for unfortunately.
