any chance for 2021 wimbledon cancelled ?

I think we should settle for 3 Grand Slams per year.
Almost nobody plays on grass in these times.
Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious grand slams since the sport started in England (I think). 3 GS is too less. Variety is good in sport and keeps players with a different skill set still on play. But it is sad that only one month is dedicated to grass tournaments and many new surfaces are HC

Tennis started in France actually, I believe.

Wimbledon had insurance that covered the financial loss of the 2020 tournament. However, it does not have insurance to cover the losses if the event is not played in 2021.

Unlike the other slams, grass tournaments cannot be moved to the fall as the playing conditions will be greatly affected. Wimbledon has to be played this year because the club does not have the funds to cover the loss of the tournament for a 2nd time due to the pandemic.

See: Wimbledon pandemic insurance policy will pay out $141M, per report (usatoday.com)

Aren’t people aware that the English vaccine (AstraZeneca) is suspected to have serious side effects and was suspended in France, Italy, Germany and Spain ?

More like they should add a fifth slam.

ATP Finals should be declared the 5th Slam and all the previous winners of that tournament should get the wins added on their resume as Slams.

Roger should be a 26 times champ
Djokovic 23 Times champ
Sampras 19 Times champ

Nadal fans might cry but let them cry, their hero is a 1 trick pony so there should be consequences

Five is too much, especially in covid times.

Nah, there’s room for one between January and May. Just replace Indian Wells and Miami with a grass Masters around July and play the fifth slam in March.

How can you be so sure?

UK is scheduled to ease its lockdown over the coming months, with a plan for all restrictions ending by 21st June.

Of course, the schedule may not be met, but I'd be very surprised if it were delayed so much to not allow Wimbledon to be held in July.

It will 100% be cancelled if they can collect again on their insurance claim and cash in without doing any work. All they care about is their money.
unironically. and this is why they did it last time too, they had nothing to lose. just collect their cash for nothing. so it 100% depends on whether they can get the insurance to cover it again

you just know they'd have tried to run it last year despite the raging pandemic in london if it meant making a buck

They don't really follow the restrictions?

The majority do but there is a rather vocal minority who choose to blatantly disregard any rules and guidelines in place
It's a little bit complicated but mainly due to trust issues - trust in the government, the health service, other people, etc.

Didn't Italy or somewhere just shut down again? With the UK Variant spreading I think there's a 50/50 chance of a cancelled Wimby and about 75% chance of NO olympics again

The situation in France is much worse than the UK. No slam will be cancelled or postponed this year but it’s the french that’s probably under more threat due to how far the french are behind in vaccines and all the cases are starting to surge there again.

Anyway the world can’t keep locking down forever. Life has to go on or there will be nothing left to go back to. We have the vaccines now and they work well so no issues.

Difficult to compare. Most countries are following the manufacturers recommendations and giving doses 2-3 weeks apart. Britain has gone it's own way and injected lots of people but not vaccinated that many.

The UK is acting on the principle that an initial dose helps ward off the worst effects of Covid while waiting for the second dose to complete. Given that the number of deaths is currently falling sharply in the UK, or at least in England, the strategy seems to be working.

There's definitely a chance, yeah. UK, where I live, is in early days of vaccine and things are looking brighter. However, there have been plenty of blunders on the way to this point, and it's still possible there will be more blunders to come as we ease lockdown and see just how wise it is to assume a vaccine is immunization when its only one of two stated doses. I'd wait till May, June before we know for sure.

Wimbledon has to stay but since the AO and USO have a history of changing surfaces anyways, they should just switch to red clay. You know, to help reduce the impact of rain or something
OK, you convinced me. We keep 4 slams per year: 3 red clay slams (could be 1 dry clay, 1 wet clay, and other windy clay), and 1 grass. Should eliminate hard courts, because it’s a surface that does not challenge players to hone their skills, and it is not natural at all.

Ok honest question - does anyone know for an absolute whether or not Wimby’s pandemic insurance coverage is active for this upcoming 2021 tourney....

Cause if it IS, I can see them taking the easy money and chilling...

On the other hand, even if they’re covered 1) they might have a hard time exercising their right of a huge chunk of the populace is vaxed and Corona is in retreat AND 2) 2 straight years without holding your prestigious tourney is not a good look...

Of course, money is more important than tradition.

There are strong institutional and cultural barriers to money taking over science, but it happens on the sidelines. Covid vaccines could cost next to nothing, for example.
Sure Bill Gates is happy to deliver free vaccines for Africa. A computer nerd talking about vaccines and diseases I wonder why. Gates foundation and the World Economic Forum hosted Event 201 a high level pandemic exercise before the corona times. Something is fishy here

You have unnecessary worries, guys. 2021 Wimbledon will take place, in the worst case without spectators. The organizers can no longer use insurance against pandemic for the second time in a row.

Source:

Lewis, who will be replaced by Sally Bolton as AELTC chief executive in August, acknowledged the current crisis means the tournament will be unable to secure similar insurance for next year's event.

"No that's impossible in the current climate," Lewis said, according to the Metro.

"What I would say about the future though is that when I first started in 2012, there were some signs that things were not insurable, because of communicable diseases that had taken place like SARS and swine flu.

"In the immediate aftermath you can't get insurance but fairly soon after that, you can start to get insurance again, the market returns.

"So there won't be insurance next year, but I think in the medium term, just because we've made one claim it won't affect us in the long term."

All other grandslams held its edition during the pandemic and showed that with restrictions, a tennis grandslam could be played at the time of COVID.

the numbers would be falling sharply now, as they did in May last year, because the UK has been in lockdown for 3 months and this has dramatically slowed transmission. Let's see what happens when the stupid Government lets the brakes off before a significant number of people have had both doses. There will be a third wave, but not in time to cancel Wimbledon.

It's confirmed they can't claim it twice for the same pandemic, otherwise it would have probably been canceled again already.

First dose vaccination is probably already have an effect too, at least I hope so.

They should quarantine the players in France for two weeks and then play RG and Wimbledon back-to-back in Paris. Nadal can lift his 3rd Wimbledon trophy on Chatrier :happydevil:
