I am sure Nishikori played the Davis Cup plenty of times before, hardly anyone participates regularly. Benneteau making a fuss over nothing really.

Davis Cup is such an antiquated concept at this point. What's the point of it really? It can't be bragging rights for the country that wins it because most of the top players don't even play it anymore. It's an absolute joke. "Oh look, my country is the best at something, I'm so proud I could cry." Give me a break. All it is, is an excuse to get obnoxious all in the name of "nationalism."

Odd that he should go for Nishikori. Don't see him having a go at his buddy Federer or the other top players who regularly skip. No one should be punished for skipping Davis cup. It shouldn't be tied to Olympic Games representation either. If players don't want to play then fine.
On the other hand, I'm fed up with this idea that because the top players don't want to play the Davis Cup then it doesnt count for anything. It's indicative of a wider problem with the sport than anything that doesn't involve the top 10 is worthless. Davis cup is a great competition. I love watching the Brits play whether Murray junior is around or not.

I agree with most people here about DC but give me a break about Olympics - you cannot choose the moment to play for your country. Either you have the compromise or not - not only when you are interested. For me is GREAT that Olympics are tied to DC representation. You want to go there? Show you want to represent your country first!

Almost all the top guys haven't played DC this year... Fed/Wawa didn't play, Nadal didn't play, Murray didn't play, Nishikori skipped it, Milos missed it, etc. The only top guy who played was Djokovic, and really I suspect that's because he lost early in Australia, Acapulco and IW, and then skipped Miami.
It definitely is a lower priority than it was....however, the guys like winning it undoubtably. In the first 1/2 of the 20th century it was regarded as a defacto major. I don't like including it though in ranking lists of greats - because it is a team competition - whereas I am rating singles play.
