Better mover: Berdych or Del Potro

You want to know who's better look at their clay H2H.

Delpo leads 2-1, the one he lost was 7-6 7-6 in Madrid, and then beat him in RG.

Over all, and even w/o the H2H on clay, Delpo has had better results on clay. That's where you look when you talk about movement.

........:-?

Really?

This thread was about who moved better, not who was a better clay courter.

Not to mention 2-1 is a downright insignificant lead.

That's exactly what you need to understand.

Better clay courters are better movers, period.

2-1 may not be significant, but as I mentioned above, even w/o the H2H Delpo has had better clay results.

Anyways, you asked a public question and that was my answer. You can believe whatever you want.

There are different types of clay courters, Murray and Hewitt are average clay players yet some of the best movers of all time while someone like Soderling became great on clay by being able to force others to have perfect movement and defensive skills to beat him, much like how Berdych and Del Potro are on clay. Almagro's movement isn't that great but he's still better on clay than a lot of guys who move better than him since he has time to set up shots and hit through the court.

To me DelPo's a better mover on hard courts, Berd on grass, and not much difference on clay.

Originally (2009), Delpo.

Recently, Berdych, who has considerably lowered his center of gravity. Look at his knees.

i agree. whenever i watch berdych, his knees always seem to be bent and he looks low down to the court. del po always looks like he is staying straight up

I understand that you're naming Murray and Hewitt because you want to show that some good movers are not great on clay. I think we either need to define good mover first or separate "speedy" from good mover. If that's the former then there is no better mover than Monfils, imo.

If a great mover is one with the best combination of balance, speed, skidding stopping, restarting and anticipation then I think Murray is overrated. He injured his ankle in last RG because of that. There is no reason he cant do better on clay except for his movement. He has the power and the defensive skills.

Even as you say there are different types of clay courters then Delpo and Berd must be the smae type and they are the ones we are comparing here only.

Well another point is clay movement is different from grass movement and hard court movement for many players which makes using only clay court results a bad comparison. Some players aren't great at moving on clay but are amazing on other surfaces, some the opposite. Safin could move brilliantly on clay and hard courts but not grass, Sampras one of the best of all time moving on grass and hard but as well as his game not being suited to clay he didn't move as well or slide as well there. Using one surface to determine it makes no sense.

There's not even much difference between DelPo and Berdych's clay results in their careers anyway so I don't see how a 1 match advantage in head to head proves who's the better mover.

I remember the lone wolf from couple years ago, didnt know he was banned. Real sensitive to Nadal bashing, takes it a little too personal.

Does that mean that Soderling, the only man ever to defeat Nadal at the FO, is an elite mover?

Berdych!?

Del-Potro has by far the best scrambling defense of the big hitters.

Maybe you folks mean Bird **** is a better offensive mover?

What about Cilic, pretty sure he defends better than Delpo.

Berdych moves well enough that it's extremely hard to get a slice on his backhand. Not so with Del Potro.

i'm surprised so many people think berdych is a better mover, especially given his current form. i thought it would be a lot closer. delpo is indeed the better scrambler. his recovery after running down balls is very nice. being both in their movement primes, i still give the edge to berdych, though. he had a more explosive first step than delpo ever had, i believe. i'm not disagreeing with you that berdych is a better offensive mover, because offensive movement is still movement, after all. berdych v federer AO09

as you said, delpo is a great scrambler, he runs balls down that most big men wouldn't. he also hits on the run better than any big man. delpo v nadal USO09

all that said, delpo's overall package is better than berdych's. his ability to hit hard from out of position complements his movement.
