I am (emigrated to Canada in the 90's) but that doesn't stop me from being a Federer, Haas, Tsonga, Halys, Brown, Goffin, Delpo etc fan as well...

Nor does it prevent me from disliking Troicki

Pretty much the point of the thread
Yep lol, Djokovic has fans of all ethnicities. Obviously there's a disproportionately large Serbian contingent, but him being a distant #3 in fanfare has more to do with Fedal's earlier presence and success on tour.

By the time Djokovic became a great player, there simply weren't as many fans to be swayed because Fedal had gobbled up most of the fan support.

Had they all been direct contemporaries, I suspect Federer would be #1 due to his fan-friendly all-court game and Nadal and Djokovic would be grappling for #2. Nadal would likely receive slightly more love due to how big Spain is. Serbia doesn't even have 10 million people so that's a big handicap in this comparison.

And I'm from Asia. He has the biggest fanbase from China and Sub-continent and most of whom don't read or speak english.

There is a reason he is loved in Asia. C'mon you don't have to be a serbian to love the guy.

He plays thrilling tennis and he keeps you on the edge even though he is expected to win.

Austrian, white, do not speak a word serbish (well, no words I should post ;)).

Also I cannot stand Ivanovic, for example, and I do not judge/like people by their nationality.

Agreed. I read Chinese as well and frequent some of the Chinese forums for Djokovic fans. For example, this: http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kw=%B5%C2%D4%BC%BF%C6%CE%AC%C6%E6. At least 65,705 fans in this forum are Djokovic fans. So, Gary20 couldn't be more wrong.

Exactly, tennis is an individual sport. Sure, I admit it's a bonus for me as a fan if the player is American but that is not anywhere near the only reason I would root for them (Olympics and Davis Cup aside).

Why the Ivanovic hate? She seems to be nice enough and is easy on the eyes......

Australian, white, with no Serbian heritage.
He has a huge fanbase down here, most of whom are not Serbian or Balkans expats, or have any such heritage or affiliation.

I don't have such strong negative feelings towards any tennis player (or person I don't know personally). It's just I don't like her pushing herself ("ajde" *spinning around*) and maybe I don't like her because of the media hype. She is an okish player yet is considered to win more GS titles. Whether she is easy on eyes or not (she is not my type haha) has nothing to do with my likings ;)

I like Ivanovic but I laughed more than I should have here...

That Federer is no.1 does not mean Djokovic can't be no. 2.

He stated that India is the second largest Novak fan base. While he/she may be right, I just thought India was just very overwhelmingly a Fed fan base (more so than others) that it would be hard to call it Djokovic's second biggest fan base because of that.

Still, they are not mutually exclusive. Djokovic can be a distant second, following your logic, but I would claim China has the biggest fan base based on absolute numbers, but I could be wrong.

I think we're miscommunicating. I understand Djokovic can be second favorite, even if distant. I'm just saying that because India is such a big Fed fan base it would be hard for India to be considered Djokovic's second largest personal fan base behind Serbia.

It has a population of 1.3 billion. I don't find it hard to believe. That's all.

Djoko has fans everywhere just like the other players. His detractors have become desperate. They can't attack his game right now, so they stoop to "lack of popularity". Of course the more Djoko wins, the more fans he gains and the more spurious their argumentation seems.

That's all BS! Djokovic is not a popular #1 and NEVER will be. He could win 20 more slams. The prospect of a Federer-Nadal match at the lowly 500 Basel event was 10 times more exciting than watching any match with Djokovic IMO.

Ha ha YOU not liking him doesn't mean no one else does (as much as it pains you :D)

No, I respect his accomplishments but I'm also neutral enough to see that he's not a popular #1. That is obvious except to the biggest Djoko fanatics.

Birth certificate wont suffice, it could well be forged, perhaps he wants to scrutinize, hence provide your hospital/clinic address too, scrutiny will be over quickly. Thanks

But shouldn't China have the most fan even higher than Serbia? Given we're talking about China numbers which reach over a billion, Nole is bound to have plenty more fans there compared to Serbia a relatively small country. I mean even 10% of China fanbase(not saying these number are accurate when it comes to Nole fans) should be higher than 80-90% of Serbia fanbase.

Eh... Wouldn't be so sure. Serbia's population is just over 7 million. That's basically the size of a Chinese city.

On weibo, China's biggest social platform, the no. Of fans is 65k.

Most Chinese don't know anything about tennis, yet. There was a guy who pretended to be federer, wore sunnies and had two guards, all the Chinese surrounded him. None of them actually know what federer looked like. Very funny indeed.

It's going to be the worlds biggest market, so Nole is trying to get in there.
