Ferrer rose to #3, and Nishikori's a lot like him. I just wonder if Djokovic and Nadal being only a few years older than he is will hold him off from ever getting to #1.
Do you think Nishikori can become #1?

Which year and which sport?
If it is tennis, post 2018, then no
Most beautiful backhand on tour.

He can enter Top 10 in the neat future though. He doesnt have any points to defend until the end of the season.Dimitrov will soon drop out of Top 10 because he wont be able to defend his points at WTF and Goffin will also go down in the rankings because he wont be able to qualify for WTF.
Top 10 should be no problem. But getting to No.1 requires either winning several big titles or otherwise sustaining a very high level of year-round consistency and I just can't see Nishi doing either of these things, alas.
As things stand, Nishikori will be #15 next week. He could slip lower than that if one of Kohlschreiber, Millman, and Sousa were to win the US Open, but realistically, he will be no lower than #15. If he beats Kohlschreiber today, he'll be #13. If he makes the semis, he'll be #12 next week, as there is quite a big points gap between #11 (Goffin) and #12 (Fognini). For Nishikori to re-enter the top ten as soon as next week, he'd have to win the title.
In the race, however, Dimitrov is doing more poorly. Nishikori is currently #11 in the race, and he will overtake Fognini if he wins today. However, Goffin is #12 in the race, and he could overtake Nishikori either by winning today while Nishikori loses or by beating Nishikori in the quarter-finals. So, Nishikori is likely to be between 10 and 12 in the race next week. There's a big points gap between Isner (#9) and Fognini (currently #10), and so Nishikori would have to make the final here to end up higher than #10 in the race next week.
Either way, Nishikori definitely knocking on the door of a year-end top ten spot and seems likely to be at least in the top 15.
He is now into the SF of US Open.De facto right now he have 2475 points.Making 12 in the ATP rankings. So entering Top 10 this year could happen and take into account that he doesnt have points to defend until the end of the year.

It'll soon be 15 straight years since someone other than the big 4 held the #1 ranking. Murray made 11 major finals before he even got 1 week at #1. Nishikoi never had a chance in this era.
It’s more likely to see cows flying.Ferrer rose to #3, and Nishikori's a lot like him. I just wonder if Djokovic and Nadal being only a few years older than he is will hold him off from ever getting to #1.
I’m sure that was a bit hyperbolic.No. He has no serve. And he’s brittle as spaghetti in a box.
I'm looking for him to win both Metz and Tokyo and then go deep in the remaining masters tournaments. Hopefully, that's sufficient to get him back to the WTF Finals which would be a great achievement for him. Will he win a Master?
Will he win a Slam?
Will he become a number 1?
He can achieve any of these feats but as it seems, he needs to avoid Djokovic in order to blossom. If he can get a draw free from Novak, win a Master or a Slam than his confidence should help him find another gear in his game. If Kei is healthy the next 3 years, he has a nice window because most players above him are older and about to decline which is a constant repeating story since 2013 but at some point it would be true. Guys like Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer fell down already. Dimitrov is a victim of his thinking, Raonic and Goffin of injuries. His only opposition younger or at neat his age are Thiem, Zverev, Del Potro and Cilic.
IMO he would either win a title in Shanghai or make a decent push at Australia and take a big scalp.
Mindboggling facts! It'll soon be 15 straight years since someone other than the big 4 held the #1 ranking. Murray made 11 major finals before he even got 1 week at #1. Nishikori never had a chance in this era.
