Vienna will attract more attention this year simply because of the battle for YE#1 between Djokovic and Murray. Murray was the champion here in 2014, and he would love to repeat that same result this time. Will the homeboy, Thiem, spoil Murray's plan?

Berdych needs a final here to boost his chances. If he does it I believe he would need a simple QF in Paris and being probably a top8 seed it shouldn't be that hard.

This is the big story in this tournament; Berdy and Thiem's battle for the final two WTF spots with Nadal (just 95 points ahead of Thiem and playing Basel.) Thiem is now ahead of Berdych in the live rankings, but by the official rankings that came out Monday Berdy will be the #2 seed.:mad:

All three of these players are in horrible form and Berdy seems to have had some niggling hip or leg injury that has impaired his movement and led to early exits in his last two tournaments to Muller and Granollers in R32. Ferrer, Tsonga, Pouille, and Karlovic will be no joke at seeds 5-8. Qualifiers Khachanov and Edmund may gain direct entry and would be dangerous floaters. Simon also playing. Berdy's quest to make the final could be a tough one.:rolleyes:

Andy should scratch from this event. What's the point of tiring himself out trying to win this thing again? He needs all his remaining energy and focus for Paris and London. They are much more important! :cool:

Completely off topic, but hell, the fellow responsible for those photo's should be shot. :eek:

The only ones looking half-decent are Pouille and... Murray. Which is quite an achievement in itself. :D

Only 250s can have a 28 man draw - all 500s are at least 32.

Muzziah for #1. What are you thinking? 500 points in Vienna gets Murray in range.

This tournament is loaded with a far, far superior draw to Basel which is depleted of its top seeds.

Every player in the first round is a serious player except for Gerald Melzer a wild card. Jurgan Melzer is a nice addition and wisely the tournament tapped Karen Khachanov for the 3rd wildcard spot. (Basel got Delpo, but Swiss nobodies have the other 2 spots.)

Murray's quarter is rather amazing with Garcia-Lopez perhaps the weakest link. Thiem gets a great first round match with Gerald Melzer, but then that quarter is loaded with Kyle Edmund as the weakest link.:eek: (Prince Edmund is real strong right now and Gasquet was lucky to get by him yesterday in Belgium). RBA gets Jurgen Melzer in Vienna and is in their with Tsonga, but the rest are the in form players from the Kremlin Cup with perhaps Kohlschreiber being the weakest in the quarter (who won Munich this year and is no joke on Germanic speaking soil.) Berdi's quarter is no joke with Khachanov his likely 2nd round opponent and perhaps Seppi as the weakest link.:cool:

The draw is loaded and with so many great first and 2nd round matches on tap its just best to look at the draw and watch the schedule of play from the get go.

Thiem and Murray should make this a great event if they don't get dumped early.:D

I've always thought ATP can do better with a specialised art designer as part of their web-design team. More of player's pictures are failures than successes. :)

Yes, I understand that he's trying to close the gap with Novak but I'm worried he will tire himself out ahead of the more important events in Paris and London. We all recall what happened in 2014 when he played back to back events in order to qualify for London and then had no energy left to play it when he got there. Given that he has a tough draw in Vienna, how much energy will he need to spend in order to try and win it? That's my concern.

He had a nice streak going in late 2014. You're probably right, but I think he can do it if he keeps winning in straight sets. Just looked at 2014 and he had enough 3 set matches to make stamina an issue. Murray also played every week in 2014. He's just had a week off, so I think he can do it. He needs to grab number one while he's got a chance. Murray is no Spring chicken, so I think he's making the right moves to win WTF and be year end number one. It will be a big deal to unseat a player who just won 4 majors in a row.

Muzziah should totally win this. The seeds are a healthy combination of Muzziahs favourite pidgeons and players who've been out of form. It shouln't even take too kuch out of him

In 2014, Murray played 6 tournaments in as many weeks, Shenzen>Beijing>Shanghai>Vienna>Valencia>Paris-Bercy, and he played 23 matches (53 sets) in 37 days. Take into account all that extra travel as well. If Murray were to final both Vienna and Paris-Bercy, that would come down to 20 matches in 33 days I think. In 2014 he played a lot less aggressive, and played a bunch of gruelling 3 setters.

This year he didn't lose a set in Beijing and Shanghai, before having a week off. He should be pretty fresh going into Vienna, and if he doesn't play any long matches in Vienna, fatigue shouldn't be a problem for Paris-Bercy.

And I dug it up for you, Vienna was a 250 back then. Murray only played 4 matches there.

Recently played Simon and Pouille so yes. Thiem is going to have to find his top form to compete with Murray and that is unlikely with his limited play.

The draw is extremely nice. Karlovic has put away Johnson in their match (21 and 24). Edmund just beat Ferrer the other week, so careful you may just get what you want.:confused:

A lot of star players in this draw. Some like Ferrer are down in the rankings, but a threat to resurge. Berdy is the same, but will have NextGen future top player Khachanov who just won Chengdu and cruised by Seppi today. Thiem will be struggling to get into best form and likely to face Anderson R2 who is getting back into form after injury and owns the head to head. Pouille vs Isner should be excellent in 2nd round and neither is assured of a first round win (Pouille vs Feliciano R1:eek:). Simon should be fresh for another crack against Murray and has been in great form so an entertaining cat and mouse match even if Murray is hands down favorite. Fognini vs RBA is another strong potential 2nd round match, but both have very solid first round opponents. A lot of in form players or likely to resurge (Isner and Anderson).o_O

Turns 32 in April. It seems like Querrey has been on tour longer, but is far younger. Isner was NCAA champ like Johnson, Pernfors, etc.
