FEDERERERERERERERERERERERER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a match!!!!!! that was probably one of the top 5 or 10 matches i have ever seen live, definitely the best i've seen in the past few months!

already main story on www.espn.com

"Friday was full of five-set drama Down Under. But Saturday morning started with an epic starring top-seeded Roger Federer, who survived 10-8 in the fifth set to turn back unheralded Janko Tipsarevic."

Fed's serve was a dead give away, there was no way he was going to be broken. That and the fact that there is no way he will lose a match due to nerves.

Nah, because Roger Federer is clutch. He has the 12 slam titles to prove it.

Well I don't want to get into this really, but who has Federer defeated to win those slams? He has one great player to stop him. Just one. Every other generation has had at least 3-4 at a time. This is by far the worst tennis I have yet to witness in my admittedly relatively short life (27, been watching since my first memories). There is no contest between this era and pretty much every other one that preceeded it, it's vastly vastly inferior, with the exception of two men...

But Federer is still the best right now and deserves to win.

Wow, Rickson! If you had a million dollars to bet, you'd be a million richer right now. :)

Thanks, BP. If you wanna make some $$$ this year, bet that Federer will not take the Grand Slam because he'll take 3 of 4. I'd bet 2 million on that prediction.

Saw the last three sets of this match and I don.t think that was Fed playing but someone impersonating him who looked like a kid who did not want to come out and play today - there was just not the usual Fed fire - think he just was not himself

Well I think Federer needed a match like that just to waken him up, remember these are the first matches he's played all year. Tipsaravic played the best tennis of his whole life against a Federer who really didn't play nearly as well as he did in his first two matches and still lost!

Did anybody else notice the height disparity between Fed & Tipsarevic?? Tip's profile lists him as 5'11", but when they shook hands he looked about 5'8"-9" to me. cuz Fed is supposed to be 6"1".

Sorry, I'm kinda anal about height.

You think the fifth set was the best tennis of Tipsarevic's life?

Nah, hundred thousand dollars richer, the odds on Tipsy winning were 1 to 100.
Maybe at the beginning of the match, but not at 8-8 in the 5th set when Rickson wanted to place his million dollar bet! At that point, it was 50-50 in my book.

Wow! Amazing match. Tipsarevic's groundstrokes were
really penetrating and consistent all match long. In the
end Fed's superior serving was the difference.
Sort of reminded me of the final against Nadal at Wimbledon.
I was impressed with how well Tipsarevic's backhand was able
to handle Fed's low slices. His BH's also seemed to have more
depth than Fed's.

He's definitely not 5'11.

According to one of the ESPN commentators, the betting odds on Fed was 100:1 (you'd have to put down $100 to win $1). So, you'd be only $1K richer.

Not the cleanest match, but definitely exciting and dramatic. Both players played with guts and poise. Fed was clutch money in this match. Tipsy pounded and pounded and very nearly broke down the wall. Gusty. And please, to all you people saying that Fed sucks, I bet you would take that win if you were in Fed's shoes. I bet if you were playing a match, any match, you would rather win ugly.

He did look quite a bit shorter.

FFS can nobody do maths on this forum at 100:1 $1million would win you $10,000.

Remember it doesn't matter how badly you play as long as you win. Feds made 96 winners but 64 errors!

That's 10 thousand, not 1000. BTW, BP. Check page 27, post #522. It was around the 4 game mark.

I already said that this will be the hardest match for Roger so far and i was right.
Sorry gor Tipsarevic he had a once-in-a-life time chance.
Anyway now peoplearound the world will see that he is very underrated player.

And I hope that Joker will win in 1/2 over Roger, one serb almost did it, now it's time for Joker to revenge to Roger for Janko.

If anything this shows what it takes even when Federer is off his game to beat him in a grand slam.

True - Fed was way below his standard whereas Tipsy boy was playing out of his mind. Am sure, if Tipsy sees a recording of this match , he would wonder if that was him on the court.

On a serious note - I have seen Tipsy play for the first time. Is he always this good and consistent or today was his b'day?
Also, no doubt Fed played badly, but was this another case of a bad matchup, particularly because Tipsy was beating fed in basseline rallies?

Tipsy played a great 5th set; it was like watching Safin. If he could always play like that, he'd be top 5 good, I think.

Regardless of what fairweather fans and Fed haters will say, I think that this match proves how great of a champion Federer is. He withstood the best that Tipsarevic had to offer, and he weathered the storm. He didn't play his best tennis, but came up with huge serves and big points when he had to. I know that a lot of people will say how this proves how beatable Fed is, or how his reign is coming to an end, but I see a great fight and a great win for Federer. Hats off to Janko, he truly played incredible, inspired tennis. Look for Federer to shake this off and play well from here on out.

I said so...that Tipsy would give Federer a bad time and he might have won the match... I've been watching Tipsarevic attentively for 3 years now and he usually plays like this...very solid, big grounstrokes... it's a surprise he's not better ranked that 49th actually

Federer played bad, too much errors.

He had his first serve when he needed it, in the 5th set and that's why he won the match.
If there wasn't his 1st serve i think the result would be different :)

5'9", wish I was about 6"0-1" though. I like seeing smaller guys do well against some of the bigger guys, like Tipsy, even tho I'm glad Fed won, and Kohlschreiber.
