He's right. Yes, Federer is not just any 36-year-old, but it's not healthy for tennis to have the tour where the best player is at the age of retirement. We are lucky that Roger is one of a kind sportsman and he's still going strong at such a late age, but nothing lasts forever. At some point the old guys, no matter how great, won't be able to carry the sport on their shoulders and if younger players don't step up tennis could suffer a massive drop in popularity.

He says Rafa since he's #1 or Novak since he has 6 titles should be the favorite.
But guess what? 30 year olds shouldn't be the favorites either. But that's the world we live in now.
Not saying anyone should feel guilty for winning. I'm saying that the younger generations of players must improve, not that the older players should retire.Oh please, There is no set retirement age in any sport. Let’s face it some thought Federer was done for and younger players would get cheap wins against Federer simply due to age. If Federer really concerned about the popularity of the sport due younger players not winning bigger titles, you would have retired. Of course nothing lasts forever, but in the meantime, stop making great players with actual skills feel guilty for winning. When Federer was out in 2016, did younger players start winning, NOPE.
Young players have finally wrestled the top 10 away from the old guysm but they're still not getting good results consistently, especially in Slams. There are no players who look ready to replace, at least to some extent, the big stars in the near future.Of the top ten, half are 26 and younger(Bjorn Borg retired at 26 and caused a huge stir). Seven are under 30. I think it's not quite as big a deal as some are making. However, I do wonder how much stem cell treatment has helped Rafa and Fed. Must be nice to have the option.
He is right though, its not normal w a that old fav.
He still is the fav.
Players nornally retire because of injuries, but because medical science evolving players can play longer and this is where we are heading.

They are comingName a player that had knee surgery that is Federer’s age and won a GS along with other titles to be ranked #2. Advances in medical science might make players not have to retire but does it help them win?
They are coming
Tennis will get older. It already is.Two over 30 won slams last year.
Its not only happening in tennis.
Nadal and Novak, wawrinka and Andy. All having injuries and could maybe win slams in years to come. Lets see.Nice try, those two over 30 players already knew how to win a slam. I am talking about over 30 players who have had a possible career threatening injury that would normally make them retire but win a GS that has never won a GS before.
If there were not the advances in medical science, he probably would never have played professional tennis again. Also, his operation could have made his knee stronger and the time off could have helped the rest of his body as well. Still, one had to give Roger great credit for having the determination and making the effort to get into great shape again, in order to compete. Roger is obsessed with setting records and do whatever he can to put him further ahead of Nadal in slam count, weeks at #1 etc..Name a player that had knee surgery that is Federer’s age and won a GS along with other titles to be ranked #2. More humility from l’empereur. What a guy.

Lets agree to disagree

New treatments and medical science got Rafa back to have an amazing 2013.No, let’s say you are full of it. None those players have had career threatening injuries that required surgery except Stan and Andy. Maybe is not a guarantee. Let’s face it some are hoping medical science will help their fav
This is the real news hereTennis is in crisis, this year the youngest GRAND SLAM winners will turn 30.
This is not normal.
Shows how poor the nextgen are. If we had about-to-peak Sampras, Agassi, Courier, Edberg,Nadal, Djokovic type of players around now Federer would not be favourite.
Yes, it's almost like there's some substance that's enabling these grandpas to continue dominating the sport somehow....ah well we'll never know.Tennis is in crisis, this year the youngest GRAND SLAM winners will turn 30.

NONSENSE! Today's surgery is far superior to what it was 10 or more years ago, which helps ALL of today's players, which is a great thing. To imply that I was hoping his surgery would end Roger's career, assuming that is what you are saying, is untrue.Projecting much?
Fixed: “I was hoping that knee surgery would end Federer’s career”
To say it is coming you need proof.
One point does not predict a pattern.
Let us wait for Rafa to win a slam post 34.

Midgen too, Raonic, Dimitrov and Nishikori aren't exactly setting the world on fire either. I won't even go into Thiem representing the young guard on clay because it's just too hilarious.

Raonic - He's only an inch or two taller, if that, than players like Stich, Goran and Krajicek but moves far far worse plus he's injured too much. It doesn't even look like he hits his serve with his arm fully extended which is a basic beginners mistake. Can't help thinking that contributes to his arm problems if that's the case.
Dimitrov - Considering who his girlfriend is I don't think tennis is his number 1 priority.
Nishikori - Reputation built mostly on that 'famous' slam win over Djokovic. What the fans fail to acknowledge is would Nishi have won if Djokovic was at least near his best. Since that win they've played 7 more times(WO not included) and Novak's won them all, 21 sets won with 3 sets lost.
