Federer is not ramping down in 2018.

when will he really cut down the number of matches by skipping IW/Miami in 2019? Of course that makes a big assumption that he can win 2019 AO.

Why would he skip Indian Wells? Miami maybe, but also unlikely. He'd be better off losing the hard court 500 and as much as he loves Grass probably Stuttgart too before he drops another 1000.

Sunshine Masters fit well bc it comes right before the off-season otherwise known as clay. He should ditch the Rotterdam/Dubai weeks tho. And pick either Stuttgart or Halle but not both.

Then rest of the season - should play 1 warmup for the US Open (probably Cincy), then 2-3 tournaments until WTF.

Why should he ditch anymore than he already does though? Is an entire surface not enough? His body seems to be doing fine right now. I prefer him playing the amount of matches that he does right now so that he can still fight for the #1 spot.

Yep. This /thread.

Why would the current best real tennis player cut down?

If it comes to a point where he is consistently outside the top 10 I can see that being the time to pull the plug

No incentive to drop grass tournaments when he skips 2 months to rest before. He has shown that he can have some rust after those breaks so the grass warm ups are pretty important.

He didn't play Rotterdam last year. Played two matches in Dubai and got knocked out in Stuttgart in R1.

This year he played Rotterdam all the way, no Dubai, played quite a few less matches at Miami due to getting knocked out early, and then played more matches in Stuttgart.

So it's about even. He definitely looked gas after Indian Wells. It showed in Miami big time. I mean it was showing at Indian Wells when he definitely was grinding more compared to 2017 when he was steamrolling everyone quickly.

Not as even a spread as last year though. Somehow I get the feeling that Fred is one match away from severe decline. Like the bubble will burst any moment.

Fair point... with age, serious injuries become permanent, not temporary, setbacks, and even nagging injuries (like his back) take longer and longer to settle down. Fortunately, Fed can have the best physios that money can buy...

Yeah if he can't handle the current schedule, he probably can't handle the hard training required to be in good shape either.
I don't think his problem is training, but injuries. You can be very fit and still get injured. That's why he is careful.
