Federer was well aware of the future possibilities in Wimbledon 2018 before playing Kevin Anderson.
Knowing that an in-form Djokovic could be in the finals against him and defeat him to become the first man to beat him 3 times on grass, Federer robbed Djokovic his opportunity to do so!!.
This situation was very likely since Federer has been Djokovic's pigeon in Grand Slams since his triumph over Djokovic at Wimbledon 2012. Djokovic has beaten Federer 4 times successively in Grand Slams after that.
Federer also knew that he has a losing head-to-head against Djokovic (22-23). Rather than being embarassed by the fact that he is being called the GOAT (currently) and still has a losing head-to-head vs his arch rivals, he has prevented another loss to Djokovic. He knows that his best chance to level the head-to-head will come at Cincinnati where he has 7 titles to none for Djokovic (the only Masters 1000 title Djokovic has not won!!).
So Federer chose to tank in the big points against Kevin Anderson and let Anderson (a big server) through to the semis. He also made sure that if Djokovic does get to the final, he will have to face a big server, knowing that Djokovic doesn't have a good record against big servers (even though Djokovic probably has the best return of serve... Strange)
Even if Djokovic wins Wimbledon 2018, Federer would have tarnished Djokovic's reputation/record of not beating Federer/Nadal/Murray in a Grand Slam Final since his first Grand Slam final (Australian Open) against Tsonga way back in 2008!!.
