Spain were my picks for the tournament based on a good defence, a midfield that will dominate against any team in the world.. I mean, how’s anyone going to get the ball off Gavi, Pedri and Busquets? Their bench is full of talent too. My only concern was goals. Sure, it’s only one game against fairly weak opposition, and I think goals will still be a bit of an issue for them down the line. But yeah, good signs so far. Germany are going to have to go some to get a result next game.

Germany are still well in it, don’t get me wrong. Ilkay+Kimmich+Goretzka+Musiala+Gnabry is nasty and likely the best 5 midfielders any country in the world has.

Starting Kai Havertz at CF in a must win game where you need goals though

Good on Spain for really sticking the boot in. It's no fun when these sorts of teams get into a lead then tippy tappy around for the rest of it. Probably the best performance of the tournament so far, albeit against the weakest team bar Qatar that I've seen.

Germany are done. They'll need to beat Spain because Japan will surely beat that Costa Rica team. Can't see it happening.

Looking forward to seeing what Brazil have, it’s a tough game against Serbia. England and Spain have looked the best so far, but the former doesn’t have what it takes imo. France looked good too, but too many injuries for me. Don’t think their midfield can compete with Spain and although the starters are good, they look thin on the bench. Coman is good, but after him? Thuram? That’s about it. Compare that with England bringing on Foden, Rashford and Grealish. Spain having Morata, Llorente, Koke, Williams, Pino etc..

France have the XI, but not sure they have the squad.

Canada have been great, missed a penalty and could have had a couple more, plus many missed chances from open play. Belgium clinical with their only real opportunity but in general they look terrible. Hoping for a second half comeback.

Don’t know what to make of Belgium, feels like their chance has passed. Great to see Canada giving it a right go, they’re a good team, but not being at the World Cup for so long? I feared the occasion might get to them. Definitely not the case.

Belgium are lucky to win this game against Canada. Their striker Bata-something like most of the team doesn't look good at all. At least several times Canada have been let down by their poor finishing in front of goal.

Some surprises, for me, so far in this World Cup

- Tunisia can play some decent football, arguably could have won it against Denmark had Schmeichel not made a great fingertip save
- Japan beat Germany for the first time in World Cup competition. Germany didn't look impressive or that good.
- Didn't expect Morocco to hold Croatia to a Nil-Nil draw and Croatia from what I remember looked better in the last world Cup.
- Argentina what can you say about that performance.

The caveat being this is the first match for all teams above, still some teams clearly looked more energetic in the first match.

I was not talking about Argentina. That being said. Its not a bad Example. I will say Canada outplayed Belgium the entire freaking game. In like every aspect. It didn't matter. I dont follow nor am an expert on all team sports. I will say I think that's one of the reasons soccer/ football is so frustrating to North Americans. You play better and you lose. I do think this happens in Hockey. It does. If you have goaltender that is in the zone it can happen in Ice Hockey. However, it is not as in your face as Soccer. Anyway on the other hand I think in some ways its what inspires the passion

Didn’t manage to get to see them unfortunately. They were very good at the Euro’s last year, knocked France out in a thriller. Maybe they’re one of those teams who play to the level of their opponents.
