Jannik will be seed #14 in the Orleans 125 challenger this coming week. An unusually strong field for a challenger, it features 7 top-100 players with Tsonga and Humbert headlining. This will be a pretty good test for the young lad.

Orleans is always top shelf Challenger level with many top 100 players, particularly French and Belgian, competing and going deep there. Past champions include Herbert, Mahut, Goffin, Malisse, Llodra and Rochus.

It will be interesting if defending champion Bedene motors over from his appearance in the Metz final tomorrow.

Miedler it is and Jannik sinned very efficiently in his 1R matchup at Bergamo (6&1) on his way to his breakthrough Challenger title.

Jannik shook of a sinfully slow start in the first set (broken twice, Miedler served for the set at 5-4) to cruise 7-6(1) 6-2.

Sinfully sloppy groundstrokes and just listless play was replaced by aggressive returning and a reduced error rate in the comeback and second set rout. He did blow a 40-0 lead in the match game by closing on his fifth MP.

Looking ahead, looks like he's staying in France and has intentions of playing the Mouilleron-le-Captif 100 Challenger in 2 weeks. The following week, he's entered into the Swedish Open as a member of the qualifying draw. Subject to change, of course.

At the moment he doesn't really deserve wildcards into draws at ATP level and would do well to focus on Challenger tournaments in the coming months so he can pick up more points and rise higher in the rankings. He shouldn't try to box above his weight.

I will leave his scheduling decisions to the very experienced Ricardo Piatti, who seems to be simplifying by geographics this fall...playing a set of Challengers in France earned by rankings and then, instead of globetrotting to Las Vegas or Ningbo, Stockholm qualifying not WC. His only Challenger option the week of Stockholm fitting the short trip tactic is the Ismaning 80 Challenger in Germany, one of the last few tournaments played on carpet. Piatti probably prefers not disrupting their indoor HC schedule, which probably resumes the following week at the Brest or new Hamburg Challenger. After that, there’s quite a few indoor HCs in Europe and the logical conclusion of his season will be in the two Italian Challengers at home home Ortisei and then further south in Bari in November.

Points goal is simple...needs roughly 100-125 points to get inside DE cutoff for AO’20. Very attainable.

Humbert has a comfortable lead, but Tsitsipas unlikely to defend Milan given he's 99.999999% qualified for WTF, so Ymer is the target at 651 points. Sinner wins tournament this week and he's getting in range and its very possible 10th will qualify.

Oops top 7 qualify so Humbert must be beaten. Sinner as Italian can play fellow countryman for the 8th spot so he's going to play in Milan either way most likely.

Milan has a very poorly documented and covered wild card play in tournament for Italians only so Sinner has that as a backup.

Frankly now that the WTF will be in Italy for a while the ATP might strongly consider putting the Milan winner into World Tour Finals. The first two winners of Milan made SFs at Australian Open so its not much of a stretch. This would allow the crazy scenario of a young Italian phenom winning all three hehe.

Wasn't aware of the play in wild card tourney, no. Well, with promising juniors like Musetti and Zeppieri waiting in the wings, it's not a foregone conclusion Jannik would win it. I'd still like his chances, and think he'd be the overwhelming favorite. I really doubt he can get to spot 7 by Milan. He'd have to win Stockholm, probably.

Sinner recovers from a first set tiebreak loss to defeat Lukas Rosol 6-7 7-5 6-3. Into his 4th career challenger quarterfinal!

A gritty win earlier today for Jannik Sinner against Lukas Rosol in last 16 action in Mouilleron-le-Captif. After dropping a close first set on a tiebreak the Italian led 4-1 in the second set and even had a point for a double break to lead 5-1. However, after being caught at at 4-4 he was struggling, but managed to hold in a deuce game. At 5-4 he had a set point but couldn't convert, before breaking through again at 6-5 to take the second set.

In the final set Sinner broke again to lead 3-1 and consolidated his advantage in the next game to move ahead 4-1. Serving for the match at 5-3, the Italian wobbled and had to save three break points before holding for a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Can't find a news article to confirm it, but the wiki page of the 250 in Antwerp next week has Jannik as a wild card. Good news, he can focus on winning Mouilleron-le-Captif and not worry about losing a qually opportunity.

Rough loss today. Bourgue had his own cheering section that was as loud and partisan as you'd hear at any big soccer/football match. Had to be incredibly grating. Sinner dominated a good portion of the match statistics except clutch stats. His break conversion rate was one of the worst I've ever seen. Something like 4 for 24. Bourgue, on the other hand, played incredible in the clutch, saving all those break points while converting at a much higher rate in the few opportunities he had to break. Loss sucks, but will have to move on and learn from this one.

Yes, so many chances earlier today for Jannik Sinner in his semi-final match against world no. 247 Mathias Bourgue in Mouilleron-le-Captif. In the first game of the final set alone the Italian had the Frenchman 0-40, but couldn't convert any of those three break points or two more later in the same game. Sinner did manage to break serve at 2-2 in the final set before consolidating his lead to go ahead 4-2.

However, the Italian then lost three games in a row to find himself serving to stay in the match at 4-5. After successfully doing so, he broke to lead 6-5 and then served for the match, only to quickly drop serve. In the ensuing tiebreak Sinner led 3-1 with a mini-break, then 5-3 and 6-5, match point. But it wasn't to be and at 7-6 Bourgue converted his first match point for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6) victory.

A somewaht straightforward win for Jannik Sinner earlier today in first-round action in Antwerp, where he beat the Polish player Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-2, after the Italian had led 5-1 in the first set.

Nice 20 point pickup (and nearly €11K!). Moves up to NCH #114, a +5 climb. He is still down the totem pole in the large pack of players trying to get into AO’20 via DE but this helps. See my post in the “Why Not Pay Attention To The Challengers” thread.

Ortisei is a given...sleeping in his own bed! If he doesn’t lock up that AO DE by then, Bari is also a certain date. Between now and mid-November, I would expect he plays at least twice...Brest or Hamburg, then Eckental, Bratislava and Helsinki are all European options.
