I thought Fed wouldn’t win another major past 2012, so the last two years have been a joy. Especially given Fedr is competing at such a good level despite his age! It’s amazing, I don’t think you’ll see Nadal or Djokovic doing the same at 38.

So in my mind, Fed had nothing to lose. He’s beaten his younger rival, again cermenting his place as the goat over him. Novak will be a tough nut to crack, if only Fed was 28 again. I hope for a great match and another AO17 to treasure.

This. I don’t even understand how it’s a thing that people think Fed could hurt his legacy/grass legacy by losing today. By that token everyone should just retire as soon as they slightly regress and take the hint that it’s better not to play than to go deep in tournaments at an advanced age.

People argue that there’s a double standard and Federer should be judged like anyone else in the final, and that Fed fans are having it both ways.

Yeah, I mean it’s pretty incredible that he’s even there today at this age. Of course he gets extra credit for a win and more leeway for a loss. I mean duhhh.

If a soccer player was playing top level at 41 (probably comparable ages given the usual retirement ages in both) and scored a hat trick in a final, he’d get ridiculous credit. And if he has a terrible game it’d be “he’s too old and his career can’t be judged on this”. It’s just the way it works. People need to deal with it. If Nadal or Djok does the same they’ll get credit too.

Children like to make **** up. They're the only ones starting the lame "legacy" threads, for most of them Fred's probably nearly as old as their father. They know what they're posting is garbage but they were demon spawned in the internet troll era and think this is what passes for lively debate.

After Fed won AO17, I said to myself then that I don't care if he never wins another match. How the landscape changes though! Djokovic and Nadal are back at a very high level and breathing down Federer's neck in the slam race. And if course Federer himself has shown himself capable of winning further slams. In 2015, I actually expected Federer to win the final after the way he had been playing all tournament, particularly against Murray. That loss in the final was one of the most devastating losses for me and I was pretty gutted after it. On this occasion though, whilst I believe he has a great chance, I've kind of mentally resigned myself to him losing again so I think I am mentally ready for disappointment. After all, him winning or losing doesn't effect my life. If he does lose though I think I would prefer it to be in straight sets. The hardest losses to take are the ones where he actually got close to winning a close match.

Same here. I came around on Djoker some time ago and honestly it would be really cool for him to win a fifth Wimby to equal Borg. He'd basically be equal with Nadal at that point surely. He certainly deserves to win everything he gets.

Fed winning again would be awesome though. He's still out there, at 38 - spent 20 years, more than half his life, as a pro tennis player with unbelievable skill, work ethic, and determination that's just as strong after two decades at the top.
He can and quite possibly will be beaten, but that's okay, because the important thing is you try your best and have fun while doing it, and in addition to being perhaps the greatest master of our sport, Roger is a master of both those things too.

Yeah like Nadal gets extra credit for beating Fed at 17 but also gets excuses for his losses because he was so young. Also the same with his injuries, excuses if he loses but extra credit if he wins
