If your favourite player didn't give you his/her autograph..

Will you stop rooting for your fav player if they didn't give their autograph?

Would you stop rooting for that player? So let's say you were walking around casually and bump into your favourite player and he/she turns down your autograph, would you curse that player out and never root for the same again?

The poll is public but please don't be shy.

This happened to me at Cincy last year with Federer. While he isn't my favorite player, he's up there. No hard feelings though...

My fav player is Goran Ivanisevic. The only reason I can imagine he would refuse anyone an autograph, would be that he's extremely busy, in a hurry, or one of those days.

And he's Goran Ivanisevic.

I'm sure he would next time I bump into him :)

That would never happen. I'm not a child anymore and i know better than annoy someone who's doing his job. But most people don't understand that.

Steffi would give me her auto-graf!

Federer has done this to me 2 times in 2011. Still, he's my favorite player. I can understand these guys get asked for so many autographs all the time, must get annoying.

I don't care for authographs at all, so I wouldn't mind. I didn't even ask Whitney Houston for her autograph some 13 years ago when I met her, and she's my favorite singer of popular music.

I recall Andy Murray's comment about how, when he was a kid, he once queued patiently to get Andre Agassi's autograph and he failed to get one and how devastated he felt at the time because Agassi was his childhood hero. Because of that memory, he vowed never to refuse to give a fan his own autograph if they asked for one because he knew how disappointing it was to be turned down. (I hope he stuck to his vow).

Personally, I would never ask anyone for an autograph (unless, maybe, it was for a book or something special) precisely because I'd always be afraid of being refused!

Andy spent an hour signing every autograph after practice at the 2012 WTF. I got his pic of him kissing the US Open trophy signed.

I have also seen Federer be very generous with his time. I may not like a player if it turned out they were not nice but seen as Federer is a great person this would not be a problem.

I thought I didn't care either. Then I decided at the last minute to get Serena's autograph after her Cincy semi. Suddenly it became the most important thing in the world! This kid pushed in front of me and ooh I was mad. I think I had a few sharp words for her (I would have happily let her in if she was a fan, but she was just a rich little autograph hound and didn't even care that it was Serena the person, just her name). Thankfully, I got it and my near rage was replaced with elation. Lol ridiculous :)

in my defense, I spent a lot of money to get there, and knew I'd probably never get the chance again, and wanted to commemorate my super awesome vacation. Anyway, you just wait until you are in the presence of our Queen!

Interesting story. So if Serena hadn't signed your autograph would you have lost respect for her?

BTW I think my question is too extreme a reaction, maybe I should've asked if you would lose respect for your fav player if they didn't sign your autograph if they were free. Like if I met Fed at a cafe and he wasn't doing anything and he refused to give me his autograph then I would lose some admiration for him.

As long as the player was polite about it... no problem. Ignoring the question, making a rude/sarcastic comment (that ever happen with anyone?), well, could be a problem. My enthusiastic and willful cheering has been known to turn matches around.

This was standing at a barrier as she was leaving the post match interview, so my picture card was one in a sea of cards being shoved in her direction. She didn't even look at me if I recall correctly. Interestingly (to me), when she would do her post match interviews (I went to all of them) and she would turn to wave to the fans, she would look at the crowd very intently like she really wanted to see who was there and take it all in. It was only for a couple seconds, but it kind of had a real lovin' sort of vibe. I really didn't expect that...expected some kind of fakey/polite thing.

For the situation you describe, if they were polite, I don't think I'd be bothered at all. If she was actually mean/rude specifically toward me in some way, maybe I'd be upset and not like her as much, but would probably eventually get over it to some degree. Gruff/cold/dismissive I wouldn't like, but wouldn't hold a grudge. Celebrities are under all kinds of pressure and dealing with the public can be very draining at times. Everybody has a bad day sometimes and you can't be on all the time. Sometimes they just want to be left alone and I can totally understand that.

I would be alright with it as I understand that these players are busy people who constantly get asked for autographs. They surely can't scribble down their names on everyone's piece of paper. The people need to understand that.

Actually, now that I think about it, I probably wouldn't ask if I saw them out in public. I saw Bartoli (one of my faves) at Whole Foods and didn't ask her for one. I didn't even talk to her. I thought about talking to her, but it felt awkward and silly to do so. It was during the tournament, too, so I really didn't want to bother her. Now, off season, maybe, but probably not...I think I'd still feel like a dork...I'd have to borrow a child to accompany me and pretend it's for them.

Well, can't say i am surprised!

Nadal has already given me his autograph. He isn't the heartless, cold, autograph-ignoring big-nosed gargoyle that Federer is.

This.
Federer is nice in front of the cameras, that's it.

Forget being slightly ticked off, some people would actually no longer be a fan?? That is insane.

I've never understood autographs. Once your favorite athlete/actor/musician signs a picture for you, how can they have any respect for you?

I met Ben Becker in Newport after he beat Milos and said "Great match." He gave me a nod, a handshake, was on his way. It was ideal.

I get some people are collectors, but not everyone has the time/desire to write his or her name down on demand.

In all honesty, I used to really want a player's autograph. This summer was the first time I was able to snag a few like Gasquet, Djokovic and Murray. For all the wait/trouble, when you look at that jumbo tennis ball with signature on them, that are barely readable/recognizable, I just don't see the point anymore. It's not the players fault, it's impossible to sign properly on those balls with so many people waiting and all, however for what it's worth, I just won't go out of my way to try to get one anymore.

I don't know if you guys ever noticed this, but the fans waiting for autographs are really histerical, and some of them are really creepy. I was stunned at how fanatic some people are, one lady next to me had brought a bottle of wine to Djokovic for which he politely declined, some guy had a few quasi naked portrait of Nadal he was waiting for him to sign.

I think the OP is referring to a 1 on 1 situation as opposed to being in a crowd of many people.

This.

Nonsense, I have seen Federer give a lot of time to fans. He signed loads of autographs and stopped of pictures (which take a long time) after practice. Do you expect him sign every autograph every day all over the world?

Also Federer is by all accounts a nice guy. You should read this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Facing-Fede...qid=1388425797&sr=8-1&keywords=facing+federer. It gives a good insight to Federer off the court. Many many tour players all say the same thing, that he is a very nice and polite guy.

Who in their right mind would want a doubles player's autograph anyway??

To give them a ego/confidence boost.

Too bad the best thread ever on this subject was deleted. Way back when this guy wanted Elena Dementieva's autograph after the USO. It was in an airport and she said, "I am not her". Dude then sent his kid over to get it and she kept denying she was the equine beauty that is Elena.

I can't even do it justice but fanatic dad totally lost it, calling her 'demented Eva' and was looking for sympathy here - oops. Epic thread backfire ensued and we all insulted him for being a pathetic loser whoring out his kid to get her x when she OBVIOUSLY wanted nothing to do with stalky mcstalkerson and his weirdo kid. Classic stuff. I AM NOT HER!

Anyone else remember that gem?

That's pretty funny. Some people feel so entitled. It would be really funny if there's some random woman out there who still tells the story of this guy insisting she was some tennis player.

Oddly, "Stalky Mc Stalkerson" is what I overheard Bartoli saying as I lingered a few feet away pretending to be carefully selecting a chocolate bar. She must have seen this "Stalky" guy further down the aisle. Funny, I never noticed him :)

This would be even more funny if the woman was not Elena.

Hmmm. To be honest I would be quite bitter, and would re-evaluate my support for them. But I suppose after 2 or so weeks I would take into account how busy their lives are and would get over it.

Thank god Jerzy took the time to have a photo with me ;)
