is anyone else surprised by Juan Martin Del Potro?

When I think of Juan Martin Del Potro, I think of one incredible tournament, 2009 US Open and that is it. (Well and an awesome summer in 2008) He has been a huge disappointment since that tournament.

It surprises me that he has played Federer 20 times, including 6 times in Grand Slams (Federer and Safin only met 12 times and 5 times in Grand Slams).

It surprises me that he has won 314 matches.

It surprises me that he has won 18 titles. Sixth most among active players.

It surprises me that he has won more than $15 million in prize money

I can think of his incredible run at IW beating Novak and Murray, unlucky to lose to Rafa.

I can think of his win against Fed at Basel , his win at WTF, Roddick's final match , his 5 set loss to Novak at Wimb, his 5 set loss to Fed at FO, his multiple runs at Washington DC.

Lots of good matches right there

I don't see how he's a disappointment. He got his first wrist injury in January 2010 which kept him off tour for nearly a year. Then after working his way back to near his best form (see Wimbledon 2013) he gets another wrist injury that may have killed his career.

Delpo has the heart of a champion. His only problem is staying on the court, if he's on it you can bet he will be competing and winning.

The surprise is mostly because when he was healthy, he still lost and fans always had excuse of injury.

8 of his titles are at 500 level, 9 at 250 level. The other one, of course, was his 2009 US Open title, the only Slam final he ever made. He also made the 2009 WTF final (lost to Davydenko) and 3 Masters 1000 finals: 2009 Canada (lost to Murray), 2013 Indian Wells (lost to Nadal), 2013 Shanghai (lost to Djokovic).

Injuries are NOTHING to do with luck. Injuries are a professional COST to be MANAGED.

Two guys are equal in every respect but physical resilience. One guy worked on it and consequently doesn't hurt himself and recovers quickly and his game is far less costly in terms of cost to resilience.

The other guy injures himself when he sneezes, injures himself sitting down, injures himself standing up, injures himself swallowing a piece of banana, injures himself breaking wind. All that is even before he ever gets on a tennis court.

But if he didn't get injuries, he would be 11 time champ and should have won more than what he didn't, right? All the favourite tt cliches.

Take Graf for example, what if she didn't get injured??? 30 slams! Yes, some idiots actually think that. Missing the whole point. In perspective, Graf is the WTA Nadal. A grinder type of player who wore down herself and her opponent. At a certain point, that's it, it is over.

Even the constant injury noises from their respective camps in their respective eras are, were exactly the same. It is just that there was nobody but Navratilova to call her out back then. However, even in relative terms, Nadal was the far more complete player compared to her.

The only injury that really was bad luck was Seles' stabbing. Nothing to do with her.

At least few people can see the real world. Kudos.

He ran out of gas in the middle of the second set at IW, not unlucky but worn down from Murray and Nole.

The 5 set loss to Novak at Wimby was one great match worth visiting again too.

He had some sort of record as a teenager that put him in the elite list of 4-5 players( all all time great). I think more titles as a teenager?
Injures did him.

Do not know what to think of him. I like the guy and wish him all the best and would enjoy watching him again but I reckon his come back this time is not the one everyone is expecting.

He was a fixture at the top of the game for a few years, always steadily rising and improving. Then it just fell apart.

It's not that black and white man. Some times your genetics just aren't there and you are more injury prone. Tommy Haas stepped on a tennis ball during a warm up and blew his ankle out. Monica Seles got freaking stabbed. Injuries and their aftermath are not always in our control.

Numbers, stats and numbers, it is ok. I also remember his H2h against the top dudes, you don't need to mention it.

Vive hit the nail on the head about the inconsistent guys:
to me it's the level at the moment, not the "career" pedigree.

you could have a regular top10 player, very steady, who always reaches the late stages of the tournament... only to be a regular punching-ball for the best players. i don't see why such a "pedigree" would make him a more difficult opponent than an on-fire player

That's why players like Safin, Tsonga,Stan and Delboy are popular among some fans. It seems you don't get it. No one thinks that Delpo/Tsonga>>>>>Murray, we all know that he has the better resume. His OG run was far more impressive than his slam wins. ( that final is overrated as fvck though). Unpredictable players are entertaining to watch. That's all.

If Juan was healthy he would of won a few more slams

He was like safin playing but with far more mental stability

i think people are giving him too much leeway with the injuries. he wasnt injured in 2012 or 2013 but he wasnt really competing for grand slam titles with federer, djokovic, nadal, murray.
i think hes a notch below them with the ability to beat them on an occasion or two

Delpo was totally fit in 2013 and he crashed and burnt in USO. He didn't play well at most slams except Wimby. It is what it is. If he was fit, he would be just another Stan Wawrinka.

Delpo's issues(with his left wrist) started post USO 2012. That doesn't mean all those losses in 2013/14 don't count but... he wasn't the same player after that. It's his fault for showing up unfit to play.

If he was fit, he would be just another Stan Wawrinka.

It'd be fun to have 2 Stans on tour.

I don't get OP. I was never much of a Delpo fan until he def. Roddick at USO and was the definition of class.
But even before then, I knew the guy is a monster. So I don't know what you mean. Injuries have played their part, but his healthy runs have always produced solid results.

And how is that such a bad thing, epecially when we DESPERATELY need someone to challenge the top guys at the moment.
Heck, I wouldnt mind even just one great performance from Delpo. Still better than the rest of the jokes who are competing at the moment, who have absolutely no chance at all
God, I sound bitter
