Many unbearable posters left, and made this place much more pleasant... USO result helped that great trend with more Fednatics leaving...
Next Nadals slam will brake even most optimistic Federer hard core fans, and after some very deserved nose rubbing of Fednatics leftovers, this place will finally became nice tennis forum...

I don’t have a say in this matter because I only joined last year, but I think quality noticeably dipped after 40-15. Just too many trolls imo. I think it’s still a nice forum, though.

You could argue tennis is struggling so the hype around it would be too. Do we honestly have any new up and coming superstars? Because we have been talking about them forever and they never turn out to be.
People get excited by new blood, especially when trying to get new fans. So I don't think we are losing original tennis fans, but not bringing in tons of new fans.

Yeah, only been here a year as well, but I think it is more in waves due to the big3 performances and who is "on top" at the moment.
Until we spread out the fan base by getting new slam winner, it will continue this way.

This was well known as a Federer fan forum. On Facebook , which has largely killed forums like this, the tennis pages used to mock this site as a Federer tribute forum. But since 2017 when Nadal locker down no.1 I noticed on other sites that Federer fans seemed a lot less vocal and that continued with every Major Nadal was winning and of course djokovic. But Wimbledon 2019 seemed the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. On Facebook Federer fans have largely disappeared and then after US Open its all Nadal fans.
I always assumed on this site Federer fans would remain as it’s quite a closed group and it seems a membership of only around 50 of us but even here it’s gone very quiet. But I’m not sure on here if it’s because Nadal is almost certain to overtake Federer over next couple of years or simply because in 2020 this type of forum is a bit old fashioned . You have to login with a password etc whereas on other social media sites you can post immediately on your phone .
I love Thiem and if there is a guy I can handle Nadal losing to it would be him but I think Thiem missed his boat to be honest.

I'm hoping not. Thiem won IW, beat Djokovic again at RG, beat Nadal in Barcelona without dropping serve once, and had a fantastic indoor season. 2020 will probably be his peak.

And you honestly don't think the moment Nadal retires his fans will also limp off into the night? You restrict this observation solely to Federer fans, when there are countless Nadal and Djokovic posters here who quite brazenly live vicariously through their idol. When Nadal lost to Fed in the Wimbledon semis in 2019, three of the most vociferous Nadal fans here stopped posting until late into the USO when Nadal had reached the semis. So they limped off into the night until Nadal came back triumphant.
Don't be so insular or naive as to think what you said about Fed fans doesn't apply to 85% of the other fan bases as well. Why? Because they are fans of one player and are not tennis fans.

I guess we’ll see. I think that the down turns of 2015 and 2017 bled off those types of fans from the Rafa/Djokovic camps.
rafa alone will gain tons of fans if he sets the record
And just being a fan of the player isn’t the issue per se. There are a significant contingent of fans who are only on the Fed bandwagon because he’s held the record the last decade. They hopped on BECAUSE he was the goat not because they loved his tactics per se.Those guys will disappear

Maybe in 2004-2005, this section never really had good/knowledgable players posting here. Heck, suresh could probably beat more than 98% of these users in this section. People laugh at him but at least he plays

I am talking in general about the genesis of the existence of forums like TTW. I wasn't here around the time you are talking about, so I wouldn't know, but it is a fact that more and more of the so called posters have never picked up a tennis racquet, nor have they ever consistently practiced any sport: the level of ignorance regarding the sport is way too high for those things to not be so.

I wasn't here around the time you are talking about, so I wouldn't know, but it is a fact that more and more of the so called posters have never picked up a tennis racquet, nor have they ever consistently practiced any sport: the level of ignorance regarding the sport is way too high for those things to not be so.
Continually find myself stunned by the deficit in fundamental reasoning capacity.
Even a language barrier doesn’t excuse some of these folks.
If you ran a similar site, would you raise the entry bar?

Most Federer fans were fans of some other player before Federer came along and will be fans of other players that carry on the same type of game after he is retired (Tsitsipas has the promise and the style, so he is an easy choice at the moment). It is the Nadal (and to a lesser extend the Djokovic fanbase) that have unhealthy obsession with Nadal on a personal level, and find it hard to transition, as tennis wasn't their primary link to Nadal anyway. The days of their teenage affections are slowly passing, and they start to realise that life goes on after the teenage years and it is stupid to be a fan of a tennis player, just because you thought that he is a "rebel" and "hot". Nadal is bald, and he is more a businessmen than anything else. It will also get worse.

For example, such members could have the right to moderate the threads they themselves start. That way they can pick their topics of interest and not one ill intentioned poster will be able to get any foothold in his activities. You will be surprised how powerful tool that is, as even a small, but very healthy group of such posters will dominate the forum level and tone. That is an absolute necessity: that some sort of good intention is a predominant objective in the discussions.

I definitely believe that differences of opinion are perfectly reasonable—if not vital—for sustaining dialogue amongst strangers. Want to be clear about that.
I draw the line at tribal “groupthink.”
I’m more than willing to listen to people who’ve done some legwork in the formulation of their views.

If you don't care about the young guys who are around week-to-week, and the majors and the big 3 are the only thing that matters to you, then I guess you'd start to make up nonsense about whether 2006 Federer could beat 2011 Djokovic on Mars playing with a wire stringbed and a metal ball due to the low gravity and thin atmosphere. I think if the big 3 retired tomorrow, I think there'd be something like a 90% drop in activity here. I think the player that comes to mind when I think of younger generations of players is Tomic. We're in such an era of decadence in tennis that the players have better things to do than improve their games and pursue a place in history. I guess we're in an era where both players and fans just don't give a damn.

What worried me for Thiem is in WTF he choked. He choked v Rafa in Paris last year after getting to a set app as he didn’t react at all to Nadal shortening points and he is very old to be a first time Major winner. Nadal will be utterly unstoppable in roland Garros to get 20 Majors. I do not expect much from Nadal in Melbourne as I think he will concentrate on clay this season until May. I can see Nadal and Djokovic splitting Majors again this year as nobody is close to either even over 3 sets let alone 5.
Injury is the biggest threat to Nadal and Djokovic. Thiem I think may struggle to stay on top 8 this season . Hope I’m wrong as I’m a big fan. I dislike Tisitsipas
Hey? Is this a a parody post? Federer fans are by and large not actually sports fans and more like an obsessed cult. Pretty much all Nadal fans used to like Agassi and love thiem now. Federer fans do not have a good word to say about anyone! Hey Pablo, I teach a lot of people whose first language it Spanish, and I wish they could write English as well as you do.
Probably in another 10 years you can just write in Google Translate and then hit "translate". It's not there yet, but it's getting close. I was talking to a musician a couple months ago in Thailand who supposedly only spoke Thai. I took a plunge and did the reverse translate thing. It works like this. You type in your own language, get the result, then plug in the result and see if you get something sensible back or if it turns it into alien.
It's interesting to see what it gets right both ways, even if it is forced, and what it screws up.
On topic: The conversation here is typical for this time of year. If Fed plays another of the Big 3 you will see as many pages about one match as about the whole ATP Cup!

What has undoubtedly hurt this forum is over the years after Federer lost his claims to be GOAT it became too closed a shop and difficult to join for new members. 10 years on from the creation of forums of this structure the dynamic has changed and people like the ability to instantly post on a global platform. This type of forum is one of the last remaining ones of this type. Lots in other sports have closed down or just have around 50 of the same posters.
It’s 2020 now, life is so much different social media wise. Also there is a lot more aggression politically which has actually rendered sport forums less popular than say Brexit discussions or Trump issues etc. I’m not sure sitting on forums all day is as popular as when there was the novelty say 6 or 7 years ago .
Really if you want good debate thenATP Facebook page is where all the action is. Within minuted if a thread they post there can be thousands of replies. It is very hard for forums like this to compete.
