Just heard a good sandbagger story

Played 4.5 League @So. C in 2007.
Moved 1000 miles in 2008. And registerred the local league as 3.0. Don't know how did he managed on that.

As expected, he crashed every 3.0 players in 2008 season. And he was DQed by USTA after 8 matches. So He became 3.5 C rated player.

In 2009, he crashed every 3.5 players again. And USTA can DQ him because he is C rated player now.

Now he bumped to 4.0. I think he may not be able to crash everyone now.

Note that all of his record is in USTA website (include previous 4.5 league experience).

No offense but it really wasn't that great of a story:p

WTH is crashing opponents? Is that some new lingo for crushing?

I don't really care if somebody is playing down intentionally. It isn't helping their tennis game and doesn't make them a better player. Winning some 3.0 or 3.5 league doesn't somehow make you a tennis big shot. Nobody really cares.

I like that song by REM, Orange Crash.

And that movie that won an Oscar a few years ago, Crush.

And when I make Snow Cones for my kids in the summer, I used crashed ice.

Oh, and when I want to hear some hackneyed mid-90s pseudo alternative music, I cue up a song by the Crush Test Dummies. Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm.

...4.5 ...registerred ...as 3.0....crashed ...DQed ....became 3.5....crashed every 3.5 player... ...USTA can DQ him ...

...bumped to 4.0. ... may not be able to crash everyone now.

...

Has he improved or just languished as a player?
Is he using his lower-level trophies as paperweights?

We're going to try and recruit Edberg for a night.

Supposedly he owes us a favor.

That would be so sick to have Edberg flavored Sandbags.

My point is that USTA shouldn't allow a rated 4.5 player to register on 3.0 team.

Once they DQed this player. They should just make him a self rated 3.5 instead of computer rated 3.5.

There is a big hole in the rating system. If more people did this (register 1.5 level lower), then there is no fun to play lower level league.

I think the player isn't very happy also. It is the captain who conviniced him & managed this workaround.

Did he obtain another USTA number somehow? That's the only way I could see that happening.

I dont think I agree with him blaming any captain though. This is an adult right? He should be mad at himself.

I dont know what good it does to tell us about it though, someone should just file a complaint with the league. (for all the good that does)

There are no "good sandbagger" storys, it just serves to either make people mad, or it brings out all the weenies who think it's okay, or the paranoid negative Nancy's who think that everyone is sandbagging and that "all USTA is about is sandbagging".

The sandbagger did it to get away with it. USTA can only catch so many people. Eventually they all get what they deserve. The sandbagger wanted the wins and he got them. It isn't a long time sport for him, because he will get to a level where there aren't enough teams or they won't play him or he will have to travel to play in competitive matches. Got what he deserved. That is why when you register on usta, it asks whether you played before or at a college, if you are going to dishonest, then the system has to catch it. Too bad more players are NOT honest and play the level they should.

It is a flaw that the self-rating system is based on experience and not skill level.

Those who hide their skills are Sand Baggers. Those who don't, get DQ'd, and wasted their time, membership, league fees, and everyone elses' who play against them.

A guy I know who was on my team in 2006 just re-registered with the USTA by spelling his last name intentionally wrong.

Local officials didn't do a thing.

Did anyone report this to the local coordinator, or the Sectional League Coordinator?

It is a flaw that the self-rating system is based on experience and not skill level.

The elite player guidelines for self-rating are based on experience. They set a minimum level at which you need to rate (although this is at best loosely enforced by USTA). That doesn't relieve the player from needing to account for their actual skill level. If you've played no organized tennis beyond high-school, for example, you can self-rate as low as 3.0. But if you routinely beat computer rated 4.5 players in your local ladder, then you have no business self-rating anywhere near that low.

Some captains use that loophole (minimums based on experience) to build teams from self-rated players who are much better than they rate themselves. What is supposed to close that loophole? Honor.

I met a guy and used to hit with him and play matches. He entered a local annual tournament around here as a 3.0 and he won. In my opinion, the guy was anything but a 3.0, more like a really good 4.5. :)

The story he told me, was that the people at the tournament told him he was a 3.0, so he went with it. LOL I used to have a good laugh every time we would run into each other and hit/played matches.

Speaking of VA Beach Tennis, there is local 5.5 player that likes to join in our pickup games. Just to keep things fair, he plays left handed. He still has a good serve and good strokes as a lefty.

There was a rumor about an entire Asain ALTA team here in Atlanta that wanted to sandbag after winning city, rather than waiting one year for a legal re-rate. They all got new ALTA numbers in their American names! The league found out about it and DQd them.

That's pretty funny. I just saw a guy playing singles yesterday when I was practicing some serves at the Greenbrier courts (YMCA), and he was playing his opponent both lefty and righty. Though he did mostly serve righty, he had a pretty nice game. I wonder if it's the same guy. These two guys play each other quite often.
What do you know about the Filipino American Team? I heard they were section champions, do you play in the same league? I met a player from that team, he's a really nice guy, we had some nice rallies.
