You could also say Fed was in the zone at some stages and that's usually enough, but he usually doesn't stay in there for 5 whole sets.
I think it's good to have the option, because it doesn't allow Rafa to track back too far to just wait for Fed to come to the net and pass him. With the dropshot, even if he just uses it once or twice per set.. He makes Nadal play closer to the baseline, which makes it easier to force the error or make an aggressive play.
Stan hasn't had a good game. Not sure if it's all due to Fed's play. Let's not get too carried away (crossing fingers tightly).
The winner of Gulbis v Lopez ..Stan didn't serve particularly well.
More work for Rog to do next match. Who's he playin?
Nadal was playing closer to the baseline overall in 2008 and murdered his opponents. That's actually his problem, that he doesn't play close enough. Forcing Nadal to play closer to the baseline is like bringing on your own doom.
The winner of Gulbis v Lopez ..
Nice stats for Fed, 23 W and just 11 UFs.
It's nice of Federer to come back once in a while to remind me why I'm his fan.
Stan was really gone for most of the 2nd set but he actually played a good set in the 1st IMO. Fun match for Fed fans.
The winner of Gulbis v Lopez ..
Oh crap! Don't think he can beat Gulbis.

I don't think we can draw much from this match. Fed will need to get into higher gear in his next match. At least he should try to have a better start because his first service game tonight was meh.
Madrid is the sixth slam.

Good from Federer, next up is probably Gulbis who I think has looked the most impressive player in this tournament so far (I'm not saying he's better than Nadal, but I think he has played the better tennis up to now in this tournament.)
He was broken in the first game but after that it was total domination.
Federer played absolutely horrendously in Rome vs Gulbis and still very nearly won. So in a sense he really should win if he plays even decently. However I think Gulbis has picked up further confidence since that point. Federer's gift (the way Federer played that day the win itself was pretty much a gift) actually led Gulbis on to some more self belief and improved play since.
very cool customer today against Lopez
Well Lopez is not that tough an opponent, especialy on clay.
The center court is very different from the court where Gulbis is playing now. That will bother his game, I think.
Anybody know which quarterfinal (1,2,3 or 4) Fed vs Gulbis will be?
Can't view atptennis order of play, and madrid site isn't working for me.
He's gonna be the first evening match.
