You could also say Fed was in the zone at some stages and that's usually enough, but he usually doesn't stay in there for 5 whole sets.

I think it's good to have the option, because it doesn't allow Rafa to track back too far to just wait for Fed to come to the net and pass him. With the dropshot, even if he just uses it once or twice per set.. He makes Nadal play closer to the baseline, which makes it easier to force the error or make an aggressive play.

Nadal was playing closer to the baseline overall in 2008 and murdered his opponents. That's actually his problem, that he doesn't play close enough. Forcing Nadal to play closer to the baseline is like bringing on your own doom.

Well, good win for Fed. Hints of some form.

Disappointing from Stan.

Reasonable match, but the quality really took a dip in the second.

Expected much more from this match to be honest,Fed seems in pretty good form(which is definitely great to see)but Stan disappointed me a bit with his performance.

Game, set, match Federer! I'm very happy it was so comfortable, and Fed looked good. I was starting to get worried about Federer, but things are turning up. I mean, obviously losing in the quarters tomorrow would still be a disappointment, but I'm glad he's had two good matches.

23 winners, 11 unforced, 6 aces, 1 DF, 66% first serves - good stats.

Nice stats for Fed, 23 W and just 11 UFs.

It's nice of Federer to come back once in a while to remind me why I'm his fan.

Stan was really gone for most of the 2nd set but he actually played a good set in the 1st IMO. Fun match for Fed fans.

I think a great Federer has more chance of beating him in that game. Fed can't be allowed to make unforced errors like he did that day, but if he plays well he does stand a chance imo. I think the Madrid match last year was as close as it's gonna get. Yes, Nadal wasn't at his best, but if he isn't again at the FO this year, Fed surely has a chance, and the dropper will be a necessary asset.

Getting more confident about a good showing from the fedExpress at Roland Garros, and making it to 287 weeks at no. 1

+1, although youtube does the job too :)

It's no coincidence that Federer gets better the closer a Slam comes.

I don't think we can draw much from this match. Fed will need to get into higher gear in his next match. At least he should try to have a better start because his first service game tonight was meh.

He was broken in the first game but after that it was total domination.

Should be a confidence boost for Fed, hopefully he doesn't blow it against Gulbis(more or less confirmed winner in the match vs Lopez)

Good from Federer, next up is probably Gulbis who I think has looked the most impressive player in this tournament so far (I'm not saying he's better than Nadal, but I think he has played the better tennis up to now in this tournament.)

Federer brought out all the artillery for this match. Great effort, hopefully he can keep this going.

The center court is very different from the court where Gulbis is playing now. That will bother his game, I think.

Federer played absolutely horrendously in Rome vs Gulbis and still very nearly won. So in a sense he really should win if he plays even decently. However I think Gulbis has picked up further confidence since that point. Federer's gift (the way Federer played that day the win itself was pretty much a gift) actually led Gulbis on to some more self belief and improved play since.

A few thoughts on the match-

I thought Fed started out a little nervous.Either that or he just needed some time to get used to the conditions. I thought he was a little slow.
Some aspects that particularly struck me were :-
Serve-This was one hell of a serving day for Fed.A decent first serve percentage and a good number of unreturned serves. He went for it and it payed him rich dividends in the match.

I was also happy to see that Fed was looking to come in-not just on the first but also second serves.Yeah he got passed a fair bit but I was still happy and I hope he continues to charge forward with authority and without the fear of being passed.

If I remember correctly he used the BH CC and FH IO a good number of times.I thought he was a little hesitant to go DTL with either of those shots but whatever he did today worked.
He also started moving really well as the match progressed-that's good to see.A few mis-timed shots here and there but that's OK.
Some good drop shots as well.It would be nice to see him use the slice a bit more in his next few matches although I think it worked well today.
Overall a MUCH better match than I've seen him play in a while now.Tomorrow will be another tough test but I hope Rogi gives it his all.
Fight Rogi! :D

The court Gulbis played on seemed a little faster indeed. The center court is still fairly fast though, more importantly the ball flies fast. It won't bother him that much I feel.

All that aside I think he's simply playing great.

Just realized it's the first time since Cincy that Fed is in the QF of a Masters 1000. Hopefully it's a good sign. :)
